ROLL CALL: Commissioners Anne Estes, Pearl Ly, Chad Majer, Robert Prosser, Ex-Officio
Planning Commissioner Alicia Lafferty (Commissioner Laurie Boone arrived at 4:09 p.m. and left
the meeting at 5:17 p.m.)
STAFF PRESENT: Suzanne Smithson, Library & Cultural Arts Director
Sarah Dana, Interim Deputy Library Director
Jennifer Davidson, Senior Office Specialist
Brian Buchholtz, Senior Office Specialist
Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson introduced new Senior Office Specialist Brian
Buchholtz, who will work at the Georgina Cole Library.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES:
Minutes of the Historic Preservation Commission meeting held May 11, 2020.
Motion by Commissioner Prosser, Seconded by Commissioner Estes, to approve the Minutes of
the meeting held on May 11, 2020 as presented. Motion carried, 4/1/0/0 (Commissioner Boone
arrived at 4:09 p.m. -Absent).
PUBLIC COMMENT: Senior Office Specialist Jennifer Davidson read a public comment received
from the following individual into the record:
Diane Nygaard of Preserve Calavera commented on the Forest Management Plan and the
Heritage Tree survey. Four trees have been nominated for the Heritage Tree designation and
Preserve Calavera would like to assist in helping to inform the public about the Heritage Tree
program.
ORAL HISTORY PRESENTATION: The commissioners received a presentation on creating,
recording and accessing oral histories of Carlsbad community members from Interim Deputy
Library Director Sarah Dana.

COMMISSION WORK PLAN DISCUSSION: The Commissioners discussed items on the 2019-
2020 Commission Work Plan and items for the 2020-2021 Work Plan: Oral History Project; the
Mills Act; Plaque Program; Historic Site Tour; State Street District Plan; 3rd Grade Art History
Program; and Carlsbad Sports History Places and People.
· CARLSBAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATE: Commissioner Boone was not in attendance. No
other commissioners had items to share.
COMMISS ION LIASON ANNOUNCEMENTS: Commission Liaison Smithson shared information
regarding the adjusted 3rd grade art program. Artwork from this annual partnership with the
Carlsbad Historical Society and local Carlsbad sc hools is available on the city website; a
proclamation was received in honor of National Historic Preservation Month at the June 9, 2020
City Council meeting; and the 2021 Historic Pre servation Commission meeting schedule will be
finalized at our next meeting.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: Commissioner Prosser asked about the location of the heritage
trees mentioned during public comment. Ex-Officio Planning Commissioner Lafferty shared
information on the Marja Acres proposal.
ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Majer adjourned meeting at 5:43 p.m.
