through 208, Rancho Carrillo, Carlsbad, San Diego County, California
Dear Ms. Long:
In accordance with your request, GeoSolls, Inc. (GSI) is pleased to submit this report for
foundation design parameters regarding the proposed construction. This report is based
on a limited site reconnaissance, as well as the Geocon (2000) final report on the project
(see the Appendix).
FAULTING AND REGIONAL SEISMICITY
The seismic shaking parameters provided In the final report by Geocon (2000) are
applicable with the exception that our fault search showed that the average distance to
Rose Canyon fault is approximately 8 miles (13 kilometers).
FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATIONS
Poat-Tensioned Foundation Design
General
The information and recommendations presented In this section are not meant to
supersede design by a registered structural engineer or clvll engineer famlllar with post-
tensioned slab design or corrosion engineering consultant. Upon request, GSI could
provide additfonal data/consultation regarding soil parameters as related to post-tensioned
slab design. Post-tensioned slabs should be designed in accordance with the Post-
Tensioning Institute (PTQ Method. Alternatives to the PTI method may be used If

5.0 Seismic: Design Parameters
5.1 The following table summarizell site design criteria obtained from the 1997 Uniform
Building Code (UBC). The values listed in Table 5.1 are for the Rose Canyon Fault which
is identified as a Type B fault and is more dominant than the nearest type A fault due to its
close proximity to the site. The Rose Canyon Fault is located approximately 13 miles
southwest of the site.

6.0 Retaining Walls and Lateral Loads
6.1 Retaining walls not teStrained at the llop and having a level backfill surface should be
. designed for an active soil pressure equivalent to the pressure exerted by a fluid density of
30 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). Where the backfill will be inclined at no steeper thau 2.0
to 1.0, an active soil pressure of 40 pcf is reconnnendcd. These soil pressures assume that
the backfill materials within an area bounded by the wall and a 1:1 plane extending upward
from the base of the wall possess an Expansion Index of less than 50. For those lots with
finish grade soils having an Expansion Index greater than 50 and/or where backfill
materials do .not confonn to the above criteria, Geocon Incorpora!Ed should be consulted
for additional nocommendations.
6.2 Unrestrained walls arc those that arc allowed to rotate more than 0.001H at the top of the
wall. Where walls arc restrained from movement at the top, an additional uniform pressure
of 7H psf (where H equals the height of the retaining wall portion of the wall in feet)
should be added to the above active soil pressure
6.3 All retaining walls should be provided with a drainage system adequate to prevent the
buildup of hydrostatic fon:es and should be waterproofed as required by the project

architect The use of drainage openings through the base of the wall (weep holes, etc.) is
not recommended where the seepage could be a nuisance or otherwise adversely impact che
propcny adjacent to the base of the wall. A typical retaining wall drain system is ~sented
on Figure 4. The above recommendations assume a properly compacted granular
(Expansion Index less than SO) ba.ckfill material with no hydrostatic forces or imposed
sun:harg,: loa.cl. If conditions different tban tho:;e described are anticipated, or if specific
drainage details arc desired, Geocon Incorporated should be contleted for additional
recommendations.
In generu, wall founda.tioru; having a minimum dq,th and width of one foot 11111y be
designed fur an allCWiable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 paf, provided the soil with.in 3 feet
below lhe base of the wall 1w an Expansion Index of less than 90. The proximity of the >
foUDdal:ion to the top of a slope steeper than 3: I could impact the allowable soil bearing
pressure. Tli='cfim:, Geooon Jncorpon.ted should be consulted where such a condition is
anticipated.
F.;,. resistance to lateral loads, an allowable ~ive earth pressure equivalent t.o a fluid
density of JOO pcf is rccomnmded for footings or shear keys poured neat against properly
compacted granular fill soils or undisturl,ed natural soils. The allowable passive press=
ass11D1es a horizontal surface extending at leaat 5 feet or ~ times the surface generating
the passive prcsaurc, whichever is greater. The upper 12 inches of material not protected by
floor slabs or pavement should not be included in the design for lateral resistance. An
allowable friction coefficient of 0.4 may be used for resistance lo sliding between sci! and
concrete. Thia friction coefficient may be combined with the allowable passive earth
pressure when delc:nnining resistance lo lateral loads.
The recommendations presented above are generally applicable to the design of rigid
concrete or masonry retaining walls having a maximum height of 8 feet. In the event that
walls higher than 8 feet or other types of walls are planned, such as cril>-type walls, Geocoo
fncorporatdd should be consulted for additional recommendations.
7.0 Slope Maintenance
7.1 Slopes that arc steeper than 3: I (horizontal:vertical) may, under conditions which arc beth
difficult to prevent and predict, be susceptfblc to near !!Uliilce (surficial) slope instability.
The instability is typically limited to the outer three feet of a portion of the slope and
usually does not directly impact the improvements on the pad areas above or below the
slope. The occum:nce of Sllificial insmbility is more prevalent on fill slopes and is
generally preceded by a period of heavy rainfall, excessive imgation, or the migration of
