GENERAL
Age-Friendly Carlsbad
The initiative continues into 2021 and the workshop hosted by David Graham and Joe Stewart in
December was successful for additional input. The next phase of the initiative involves online tools and
will be wrapping up with another workshop in March. The online tools are still open for review and
input here: www.carlsbadca.gov/agefriendlycarlsbad
Health and Wellness
Ask the Orthopedic Surgeon
Retired orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joel Heiser volunteers to provide customers a free 15-minute Zoom to provide
consultation and advice.
Successful Aging in Place: Navigating Senior Housing Options
Topic reviewed various senior living community options, what they offer and how to decide which one is best for
each customer. Other topics included challenges seniors encounter as they transition through the post-
retirement years.
“24K” Zumba Gold with Saleemah
Every Friday Saleemah leads the cha-cha, merengue, salsa and swing to get customers moving their feet,
clapping their hands and having fun, so much fun that they forget they’re exercising! A “seated” version was
added on Mondays for customers who have limited movement and balance.

UCSD Osher Lifelong Learning
90 customers registered are for these weekly video lectures from the UCSD Osher database then
zoomed in for weekly stimulating discussions about each topic.

Virtual Culinary Lab
The virtual “Lunch at the Culinary Lab” continues with great success. January registration was up to 40
students who zoomed in weekly with chef Kyle who shares his magical recipes and culinary tips for
delicious food!

Technology
Carlsbad Tech Users Group
CTUG returned in January on the virtual zoom platform to discuss all things technical that are interesting from
computers to smart homes. In addition to hardware, they discuss applications, security, streaming options,
cutting the cable, social media and all software issues.
Teens Teach Tech
Pacific Ridge High School students returned virtually to provide guidance on all tech needs. January sessions
were focused on Facebook tips, tricks and know-hows.
Social Inclusion
Adopt-A-Senior Program
Carlsbad Senior Center staff brightened the holidays with special gifts donated by many generous city
staff members. Gift delivery was covered on city social media to include Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram thanks to the communications department that supported and promoted the program.
Bingo
Virtual bingo is hosted every Tuesdays at 1 p.m. with the Carlsbad crew to keep customers’ gaming
skills sharp while visiting with friends on the virtual platform.
Music Mondays
Staff introduced a new program “Music Mondays” to fill the void of live entertainment that customers
are missing from the dining room. Every other Monday a musician zooms in with meal customers and
whoever else wants to join in for live chat and entertainment.

•Fun Fridays – weekly themes to share the TGIF spirit with customers curbside

Program Attendance during the closure
Over 1,500 new and returning customers logged in for virtual programs or participated in the meal
program that has served close to 45,000 meals to date.
Senior Special Revenue Fund
Per Municipal Code 2.38.050 Funds—Disposition of money, the senior commission is authorized to and
may receive donations, gifts, legacies, endowments or bequests made to the city or to the commission
for or on behalf of the city. All donations, gifts, legacies, endowments or bequests so received by the
commission shall be turned over to the city treasurer and shall be kept in a special fund to be
designated as the senior fund. All moneys in the fund shall be used for promotion, supervision and
operation of senior programs. No moneys in the fund shall be spent without prior council
authorization. (Ord. NS-45 § 1, 1988; Ord. 1282 § 1, 1985) The code can be found here:
