(j) Handrails. Stairways shall have handrails on each side, and every
stairway required to be more than 88 inches in width shall be provided
\\ith not less than one intermediate handrail for each 88 inches of required
\\idth. Intermediate handrails shall be spaced approximately equal within
the entire width of the stairway.
EXCEPTIO'.'liS: I . Stairways 44 inches or less in width and <tairways sen·•
ing one indi\'idual dwelling unit in Group R. Di\'ision I or 3 Occupancies may
ha\'e one handrail, except that such stairways open on one or both sides shall
ha,·e handrails pro"ided on the open side or sides.
I 2. Pri\'ate stairways 30 inches or less in height may ha,c handrails on one f side only.
Handrails shall be placed not less than 30 inches nor more than 34
inches above the nosing of treads. They shall be continuous the full length
of the stairs and except for private stairways at least one handrail shall ex•
tend not less than 6 inches beyond the top and bottom risers, and ends
shall be returned or shall terminate in newel posts or safety terminals.
Handrails projecting from a wall shall have a space of not less than I ½
I inches between the wall and the handrail. The handgrip portion of hand•
rails shall be not less than 1 ¼ inches nor more than 2 inches in cross-sec-
tional dimension and shall have a smooth surface with no sharp corners.
