Library Board of Trustees
Minutes of the March 24, 2021 Meeting
LIBRARY SERVICES DURING COVID-19: The board received an update and presentation from
Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson on library services during COVID-19 including
the current status of resources and programs, and preparations for next steps with change in
tier status. The library will continue to follow city guidance as hours and services are gradually
increased. City guidance may be more restrictive, but not less restrictive than state and county
guidance.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Smithson updated the board on a variety of topics: status on the
Principal Librarian recruitment; three library staff members appointed to a new city Diversity,
Equity and Inclusion committee; two staff members from bilinguc1I services participating on the
planning committee for the Segui mos Creando En laces conference; library staff supporting the
city's launch of a new telephone system, fiber connection to the city network, updated City of
Carlsbad website; parking lot construction at Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane; temporary
location construction for Carlsbad Fire Station 2; lighting upgrade at Georgina Cole Library;
author Tara Westover virtual author visit on April 8, 2021 as part of Carlsbad Reads Together
2021; receiving a proclamation in honor of National Library Week at the City Council Meeting
on April 6, 2021; thank you to Friends of the Carlsbad Library for supporting Carlsbad Reads
Together 2021; and the budget for FY 2021-22 has been submitted and will be presented to City
Council in May of 2021. The trustees will receive the final library budget information at the May
26, 2021 Library Board. of Trustees meeting which is nicely positioned between the budget
presentation to City Council and the budget acceptance by City Council in June.
FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative McBride reported the Carlsbad Library & Arts
Foundation asset value is $4,806,000.00. The Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation is pleased to
be sponsoring virtual events.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Representative Hulsart shared that the Carlsbad Friends of
the Library nominating committee presented the 2021-22 executive board members for
Carlsbad Friends of the Library board approval for June of 2021.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Mary Millet
reported to the board that North San Diego County Genealogical Society President Tom
Cousineau was interviewed by BBC Scotland regarding the impact of the pandemic on on line
meetings and research; the North San Diego County Genealogical Society is one of the most
active societies in the United States; participation and membership has increased during
COVID-19 with currently 324 members; a transition committee is being formed to evaluate
virtual learning; a survey is being offered to members regarding comfort level and interest in
