Monthly LIBRARY Report
February 2021
Programs:
•In celebration of Black History Month, a pre-recorded children’s baseball magic show was
offered from Feb. 19-26 on the library’s website and Facebook page. Magician Tommy Terrific
performed baseball-themed magic tricks and celebrated the life and accomplishments of
National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee and Negro league baseball star Satchel Paige. Thirty-
seven community members watched this unique performance.
•Cultural Arts celebrated Black History Month with an exciting lineup of programs on the Cultural
Arts webpage:
o Family art lessons inspired by six Black artists who contributed greatly to their field
during different eras as featured in the library's newly-added database by ProQuest:
Black Freedom Struggle in the United States.
o The Langston Hughes Project, streamed Feb. 18-23, a multimedia concert performance
of Langston Hughes’ kaleidoscope Jazz poem suite, “Ask your Mama: 12 Moods for
Jazz.” This virtual performance, filmed in the Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad City
Library, a homage to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at
the beginning of the 1960s.
o Local jazz artist Leonard Patton, streamed Feb. 22-28 and filmed in the Schulman
Auditorium, performed timeless renditions including Sam Cooke’s “A Change in Gonna
Come.”
•On Feb. 17, children were invited to a special session of Paws to Read to celebrate Library
Lovers’ Month. Three volunteer pairs from Love on a Leash were on hand to hear children read
books in a safe and nonjudgmental space. There was an attendance of three children. Although
attendance was low, promotion of the program was offered multiple times through the city’s
social media platforms.
•On Feb 22, Librarian Missy Shaw was invited to be a virtual Read Across America guest reader at
Kelly Elementary School. She shared “Horton Hears a Who” by Dr. Seuss and promoted library
services.

Projects:
•The initial inventory of material at both the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane and Georgina
Cole libraries has been completed. The staff is now searching for items not initially inventoried.
•Comics and graphic novels were moved from the RBdigital app to the Libby app, which increased
their visibility. With 131 checkouts in February, circulation of these items was more than four
times the previous average of 32 per month!
•The City of Carlsbad’s new learning management system (LMS), Cornerstone launched on Feb.
11.Library & Cultural Arts staff contributed to the selection process with other city
departments. Future city and department training will be managed and tracked through this
software.
•Planning for the annual Carlsbad Reads Together community reading program relaunched with
the same book selection that had been planned for April 2020. The 2020 scheduled visit by
author Tara Westover needed to be canceled due to the global pandemic. There will be a
presentation at the March Library Board of Trustees meeting with additional information to be
delivered by Deputy Library Director Sheila Crosby. The 2021 Carlsbad Reads Together event will
center around the following book selections, with programming planned throughout the month
of April.
o Adult selection – Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover
o Teen selection – The Reader by Traci Chee
o Youth selection – Nothing Stopped Sophie by Cheryl Bardoe
Accomplishments:
•Lead Librarian Andrea Hilliard and Library Technician Hannah Nelson were appointed to the city’s
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee after a competitive selection process. Library Assistant
Sandra Riggins was appointed as an alternate. The team will be led by a consultant from The
Centre for Organization Effectiveness.
Highlights:
•Attendance at four Genealogy programs in February 2021 was up 104% over the same four
Genealogy programs in February 2020. The ability to host speakers outside of Southern California
virtually and the elimination of travel, parking and occupancy concerns at city facilities has
contributed to the bump in attendance.
•Genealogy & Carlsbad History staff completed significant historical research for Parks &
Recreation (Heritage Tree Nominations), Communications (Women’s History Month) and the
Historic Preservation Commission (various local properties and residents).
•Career Online High School student Shawnna C. completed her academic requirements and
received her diploma.
