Do not open containers prior to placing plants in planting areas. 4. The irrigation system shall be operational and approved prior to plantlng. B. Pre-plant Weed Control: 1. Use a non-selective systemic contact herbicide al recommended and applied by an approved licensed landscape pest control advisor and applicator. Leave sprayed plants Intact for at least 15 days. 2. Clear and remove these existing weeds by mowing or grubbing off all plant parts at least 2 Inches below surface of soil over entire areas to be planted. 3. After Irrigation system Is operotlonal, apply water for 10 days as needed to achieve weed germination. Apply contact herbicides and wait as needed before planting. Repeat as required. 4. Maintain weed free site until acceptance by Owner. C. Lay-Out: Mork locations for plants ond outllnes of areas to be planted before any plant pits are dug. Gain City approval. If underground construction or utility lines ore encountered In the excavation of planting areas, other locations for planting may be selected by Owner. Accomplish layout with flogged grade stokes Indicating plant nomes and specified container site on each stake. Confirm location and depth of underground utilities and obstructions. D. Planting of Trees and Shrubs: 1. Strip and stock approved excavation for planting which Is encountered within areas for trenches, tree holes, plant pits and planting beds. 2. Remove from site excess son generated from planting holes and not used for backfilling. 3. Protect areas from excessive compaction when trucking plants or other materials to planting areas. 4. Provide excavated holes with vertical sides with roughened surfaces and of a size twice the diameter and 1-1 /2 times the depth of the root ball for all trees and shrubs. 5. Cut cons on two sides with acceptable can cutter only. Do not Injure root boll. Superficially loosen edge roots on three sides ofter removing from can. 6. Prepare the slurry at the site by first adding water to the tonk when the engine Is at half throttle. When water level has reached height of agitator shaft, provide full circulation, then odd seed, followed by fertilizer, then mulch. Only odd the mulch to the mixture after the mulch shall be In. Commence spraying immediately when tank is full. 7. Spray with uniform visible coat by using the green color as a guide. Do not use steel or ony plastic screeds, floats or "Fresno" for initial floating and screeding operations. 2. All concrete finishes shall be as listed on the Drawings. Finishes are os follows: a. Steel Trowel Finish - After surface water dlsoppeors and floated surfoce is sufficiently hardened, steel trowel and re-trowel to smooth, dense, herd finish. After concrete hos set enough, re-trowel to o smooth, uniform finish free of trowel marks or other blemishes. Avoid excessive troweling that produces burned areas. b. Sondblost Flnloh - I. All work shall conform to applicable OSHA and EPA stondards. 11. Contractor shall schedule this work to be executed with as little conflict with other trodes as posslble. If necessary, Contractor shall be responsible for the protection or masking of od)acent surfaces. lit. Test areas for sample of blasttng wlll be establlshed where surfoce will not be left exposed. Nozzle position during the operation shall be os determined in the making of the approved samples. vii. All concrete areas requiring patching shall be patched, with all rough spots and unevenness in the concrete surface ground smooth before the sandblosting operation is begun. vi!!. Wash down concrete sondblasted surfaces promptly to remove sand ond dust. Upon completion, remove from site all surplus ond waste materials. c. Broom Finish - Steel trowel to a smooth, dense, hard finish, then apply a broom finish with a stiff broom in direction perpendicular to walk edge. d. Retardant Fin lsh - I. Concrete Mlx Design: An extremely coarse mlx, containing the greatest posslble percentoge of 3/8 inch moxlmum size oggregote ond o minimum amount of mixing water shell be used. Aggregate / sand ratio to be 70% aggregate to 30% sond. ii. Preparatory Work: The concrete should be placed and consolldated so as to completely fill all spaces in the forms. Temping is not permltted In order to maintain the aggregate near the surface for later exposure. Apply a wood float finish which will permit 3/16 inch of aggregate exposure. lli. Application of Retarder: As soon as the preceding hos been completed, apply the retarder and 'Lithotex' by L.M. Scofield, (213) 725-7112, per Manufacturer's oppllcotlon instructions. Once the retarder has been applied, cover the entire surface with plastic sheeting or curing paper to achieve deeper aggregate reveal. Iv. Aggregate Exposure: The retarder should be removed between eight end twenty hours after plocement by sandblasting or with o coarse fibered and rust resistont wire scrub brush and jet of water. A clear seoler shall be applled and the surface shall be covered after aggregate exposure with new, non-steining paper. E. Concrete Surfoce Sealer: Surface Sealer: All concrete that hos either been sondb!osted or retardant finished shall be seoled with o clear, penetrating concrete seoler. If efflorescence or alkali-staining ls evident after the concrete hos cured, lightly wash the aggregote surfoce withe mlld murlotlc acid solution (usually o 10: 1 dilution) that hos been thoroughly rinsed with water and cleaned with diluted Llthochrome "Floor Cleaner" by L.M. Scofield or equal. Rinse again and dry thoroughly. After concrete mix has cured for at leost one month, the concrete surface shell be thoroughly washed with fresh, clean water. After surface rs thoroughly dried, apply one coot of Aqua-Mix Penetrating Sealer, at the rote of 200 SF per gallon. Allow 24 hours before applying water to verify if water beads. If not, apply a light second coat. Refer to Aquo-Mlx Specifications for complete Instructions. 3.011 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Fleld Inspection and testing wlll be performed under p,c;vlslan of the UBC, current edition. B. Molntoln records of pieced concrete Items. Recor date, location of pour, quantity, temperature and test samples taken. 3.09 PROTECTION A. lmmedlately after placement, protect concrete from premoture drying, excessive hot or cold temperotures end mechanical · injury.
