HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-04-28; Library Board of Trustees; MinutesPage 2 of 3 Library Board of Trustees Minutes of the April 26, 2021 Meeting library services; and preparations for next steps with change in tier status. The trustees engaged in a conversation regarding hours, days and services in the libraries. The library will continue to follow city guidance as hours and services are gradually increased. City guidance may be more restrictive, but not less restrictive than state and county guidance. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Smithson updated the board on a variety of topics: status on the Principal Librarian recruitment; library staff enrolled in professional one-on-one coaching program; staff attending California Library Association virtual conference; Carlsbad Reads Together is concluding; updated City of Carlsbad website launch in late May 2021; new telephone system and fiber connection to the city network, updated City of Carlsbad website; parking lot construction and additional ADA parking at Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane; temporary location construction for Carlsbad Fire Station 2; lighting upgrade at Georgina Cole Library completion; donor recognition in the future; new Library Board of Trustee applications being accepted until May 21, 2021; and the budget for FY 2021-22 has been submitted and will be pre_sented to City Council in May of 2021. The trustees will receive the final library budget information at the May 26, 2021 Library Board of Trustees meeting which is nicely positioned between the budget presentation to City Council and the budget acceptance by City Council in Jun~e. Director Smithson will share with the trustees a link to Build Back Boldly, a state proposal that includes key subcommittee packages to address public libraries. FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative McBride reported the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation approved a donation of $157,620.00 that will be used as directed by the endowment donors. The Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation asset value is $4,901,000.00. The Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation is pleased to be sponsoring virtual events. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Representative Hulsart shared that the Carlsbad Friends of the Library were pleased to enter the Friends of the Library bookstore and find it in immaculate condition, and the Friends of the Library look forward to reopening the bookstore when permitted. NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Mary Millet reported on the April 10 spring seminar which included 97 attendees and six presenters from North San Diego County Genealogical Society; a draft of a member survey regarding comfort level and interest in returning to in person meetings, hybrid and virtual meetings was reviewed at the April 13 board meeting; Program Speaker Director Jim Jacobson has resigned and the position will now be a three person committee; and a rich schedule of speakers is lined up through November of 2021. Chair Larson asked Board Liaison Mary Millet if the North San Diego County Genealogical Society membership is aware of the library's availability. Board
