Subject: Final Compaction Report West Coast Self Storage Development 2405 Cougar Drive
Carlsbad, California Project No. 2M-1808003
Dear Mr. Fitzpatrick:
Giles Engineering Associates, Inc. (Giles) is pleased to present the results of our final geotechnical
testing services for the new West Coast Self Storage building located at the subject site. The initial phase consisted of site grading and compaction testing for the lower building pad as previously
reported October 26, 2018, in the Lower Building Pad Compaction Report.
SUMMARY OF EARTHWORK OPERATION AND TESTING
Our final phase geotechnical field services for this project included observation and compaction testing for subgrade and aggregate base for the construction of building pad areas, retaining walls,
utility trenches, parking areas, and performing footing inspections. These observation and testing services described herein were initiated on November 15, 2018 and continued to date, with final observations and compaction testing on October 9, 2019. This report presents a summary of our field
observation and density testing services following the October 26, 2018, Lower Building Pad Compaction Report.
A total of 65 field density tests (Test No. 13 to 77) were performed during the final phase of the project to document that the compacted fill met project specifications. The approximate locations of these tests are shown in Figure 1. The field density tests were conducted with a nuclear density gauge in
accordance with ASTM 6938-10 (replaced ASTM D2922 and ASTM D3017). The following paragraphs briefly described the results of our final phase observation and testing.
Building Pad Subgrade and Footing Observation and Testing
The upper building pad area was in a cut and fill transition area underlain by bedrock and therefore
scarification of the bedrock soil was required in the cut area of the building pad and additional overexcavation was required per our geotechnical recommendations, and also at the base of any
areas to receive fill, and in accordance with the project geotechnical report. Our office was contacted on an on-call basis to observe and test the upper building pad area, and the final lift of the lower building pad area, which was previously prepared. The bottom of the footing excavations were
probed with a small diameter steel probe rod and assessed to be firm and dense. Footings were observed to be excavated per plan (length/width/depth) and founded in competent materials. The

bearing suitability of the soils was also checked using a Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP) instrument and with a nuclear density gauge. Any loose soils at the footing bottom were removed and
recompacted. The results using the DCP documented that the soils possess an allowable soil bearing pressure in excess of the design value recommended in our geotechnical report.
Water Main Trench Observation and Testing
Backfill observation and testing for the offsite utility trench water main within Cougar Drive was
performed. The soils were compacted in lift of about 6 to 8 inches in thickness. We monitored the backfill operation and conducted compaction tests on an on-call basis with a nuclear gauge to document that at least 90 percent relative compaction was achieved at the test locations.
Parking Lot Area Observation and Testing
Subgrade soils within the parking areas were generally graded, including moisture conditioning and compacting to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density based on Modified Proctor (ASTM
D1557) using a vibrating roller per the project geotechnical recommendations.
Imported aggregate base was placed within the parking area, both for parking stalls and drive areas.
These materials were moisture conditioned and compacted to at least 95 percent of the maximum dry density based on Modified Proctor (ASTM D1557). Asphaltic concrete was placed on the compacted base in the parking lot area.
Laboratory Testing
Laboratory testing was completed during grading to determine soil parameters and suitability for use as structural fill. The laboratory testing program was conducted in general accordance with the procedures recommended by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and/or other
relative specifications. Results of the laboratory tests are summarized in Table 2 and 3 and below.
Proctor Maximum Dry Density and Optimum Moisture
The determination of the maximum dry density at optimum moisture content was completed on select
bulk representative samples to determine the relative density of our test results. The Modified Proctor
testing was completed in accordance with Test Method D 1557.
Expansion Index and Soluble Sulfate Analysis
To evaluate the expansive potential of the fill soils during grading, a representative bulk sample was
collected at various locations and depths in the upper 8 inches of the lower pad finish grade soil, and transported to our laboratory for Expansive Index (EI) testing in accordance with Test Method ASTM D 4829. The results of EI tests indicates that material onsite has a low expansion potential (EI = 25).
A representative sample of the near surface soils were sampled and tested to determine the concentrations present of water soluble sulfate which could result in chemical attack of cement.
Corrosivity testing indicated that near surface soils contain 0.0114 percent of water soluble sulfates. Based on Section 1904.1 of the 2016 California Building Code (CBC), concrete that may be exposed to sulfate containing soils shall comply with the provisions of ACI 318-11, Section 4.3. Therefore,
