of the Library
District: All
Recommended Action
Adopt a resolution accepting a $36,575 pledge of direct support from the Carlsbad Friends of
the Library to support FY 2021-22 library programs and services.
Executive Summary/Discussion
The Carlsbad Friends of the Library has generously pledged $36,575 in direct support of library
programs for the 2021-22 fiscal year. Carlsbad Municipal Code Section 2.08.100 requires the
City Council’s approval for the donation because it exceeds $5,000.
Friends of the Library is a non-profit, community-based organization, founded in 1957 with the
mission to support Carlsbad City Library programs and activities. The organization raises funds
through the sale of books at Friends of the Library bookstores in both the City and Cole
libraries, as well as through online book sales. The pledged support will provide supplies for
children’s, teen and technology programming, reimbursement for performers, materials for the
ongoing mindfulness series and support of the Carlsbad Reads Together author talk.
Fiscal Analysis
Donations from the Carlsbad Friends of the Library augment the operating budget for the
library allowing the purchase of materials and the continuation of programs for the community
that otherwise might not be possible. Pledged support is received from the Friends as expenses
occur.
Next Steps
If the pledge is approved by the City Council, a letter of appreciation will be sent on behalf of
the City of Carlsbad and the Library & Cultural Arts Department to acknowledge the ongoing
support from the Carlsbad Friends of the Library in championing library programming.
The Library & Cultural Arts Department will request funds as needed during Fiscal Year 2021-22
to deliver the identified programs and services.
