Monthly Library Report for May 2021
Programs:
Five students are currently enrolled in Career Online High School. Four of those students are
nearing completion. The Career Online High School recently transitioned from Gale to a new
hosting platform, Smart Horizons, which was completed on May 17.
TAB (Teen Advisory Board) is a monthly meeting for teens to give input on library services and
topics. Four teens attended the May 18 Teen Advisory Board meeting. Librarian Ashleigh
Hvinden spoke about the upcoming Summer Reading Adventure program for teens and
available opportunities for Teen Advisory Board members to contribute to the new website.
Beginning with the month of June, Librarian Ashleigh Hvinden will begin posting the meeting
agendas in the Teen Advisory Board section of the website.
On May 19, Bennett, a first grader, read to the faithful companion of Library Board Trustee
Beth Hulsart for the entire half hour Paws to Read event. While Bennett was the only attendee,
he is an amazing reader and enjoyed sharing his books. Staff look forward to the time when this
program can be attended in person. For comparison, average Paws to Read attendance at Dove
Library pre-pandemic was 40 attendees per session.
Projects:
The William D. Cannon Art Gallery posted two new videos on its webpage, offering patrons a
virtual experience of the current exhibit, “Material Pulses: Seven Viewpoints.” The first video is
a virtual tour hosted by Gallery Curator Karen McGuire. The second video offers viewers a time-
lapse video showcasing the actual installation of this national touring show. While this exhibit
closed on May 23, the videos continue to be available on the webpage.
Collections and Technical Services reviewed possible tools for use in reviewing the collection for
a current project, a diversity audit. Various approaches were examined, and potential
methods/resources for the audit were also discussed. Cataloging staff began to discuss changes
in order to reflect diversity goals for the collection and to make finding materials easier for
patrons and staff.
Website Upgrade
•Website preview sessions were held for staff on May 4, 5 and 11 to provide a sneak
peek of the newly upgraded Library website prior to the go-live date. These sessions
provided a full tour of the new website and provided staff with the opportunity to ask
questions.
•The website was successfully launched on Monday, May 17.

All three library locations participated in the North County Homeless Data Collection project,
which entailed observing and collecting demographic data about those experiencing
homelessness near the libraries. This initiative supports San Diego County’s efforts to
understand the needs of, and provide services for the unsheltered population. Data was tallied
and submitted to the city on May 4, who then relayed the information to the county.
Staff Accomplishments:
Library Assistant Sandra Riggins and Lead Librarian Jennifer Johnson graduated from San Diego
State University with their Master of Public Administration degrees. They participated in the
program supported by the City of Carlsbad and with a cohort of City of Carlsbad employees.
Highlights:
May 10, Library & Cultural Arts continued to increase in-person services at all three library
locations, including Saturdays at the Georgina Cole Library. This was followed by a substantial
increase in hours of service on May 24, when all library sites adjusted to be open six days per
week (Mon - Thurs, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Fri & Sat, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.).

Other:
The California Library Association annual conference was held virtually on May 11-15. Twenty-
one staff members attended the conference. Interim Principal Librarian Carrie Scott presented
at the preconference on the topic of Literacy Coordinator Core Competencies. In addition, she
facilitated a breakout room on the COVID Diaries Project at the California Center for the Book’s
Adult Services Symposium. Interim Senior Librarian Ally Goodwin presented a session on the
topic of Reader’s Advisory Services for Children.
Several staff members in Collections and Technical Services virtually attended Library Journal’s
“Day of Dialog” which featured panels of writers discussing their upcoming works from across
different genres. Such events allow staff who oversee the library’s collection to keep in touch
with the literary marketplace. Among the presentations were a panel conversation on Social
Justice: Now and Tomorrow, and a conversation with Katie Couric on her new book.
Library & Cultural Arts staff are working with the city’s Human Resources team to fill the many
position vacancies that were left unfilled during the past 15 months of the pandemic. Across
the department, there are currently 8 full-time vacancies and 41 part-time vacancies.
Training Coordinator Emily Bruce provided timekeeping and Zoom technical support to
Communication & Engagement Department staff at the virtual Town Hall on Homelessness held
on May 25. The goal of the town hall sessions was to share information about the city’s current
and planned efforts to reduce homelessness and give residents from each district opportunities
to raise questions and provide feedback on the topic of homelessness in the community.
The Historic Preservation Commission welcomed two new commissioners in the month of May.
Patty Schreibman and Raul Diaz joined Library & Cultural Arts liaisons Deputy Library Director
Sheila Crosby, Director Suzanne Smithson and Senior Office Specialist Brian Buchholtz for their
