Recommended Action
Commissioners will review and discuss the FY 2020-21 work plan progress and discuss the FY
2021-22 work plan.
Executive Summary/Discussion
The FY 2020-21 work plan for the Historic Preservation Commission contains several items (see
Exhibit 1). Commissioners have volunteered to work on these items and will share progress. The
commissioners will discuss opportunities to add to and assist with the FY 2021-22 work plan.
Next Steps
When the Historic Preservation Commission FY 2020-21 work plan is finalized by the
commissioners, it will be presented to city council for approval.

Historic Preservation Commission Work Plan
Fiscal Year 2020-2021
I. Mission Statement
The mission of the Historic Preservation Commission shall be to advise the City Council,
Planning Commission, and Housing Commission in all matters relating to the identification,
protection, retention and preservation of historic resources in the City of Carlsbad and inform
the public of all matters pertaining to the preservation of historic resources within the
guidelines and codes that govern the Commission.
II. Composition
The Historic Preservation Commission shall consist of five regular members appointed by the
City Council, and one ex officio representative appointed by the Planning Commission. All
members of the Commission shall be Carlsbad residents and registered voters. The Planning
Commission Representative shall be a non-voting member.
Ill. FY 2020-2021 Goals & Tasks
The City of Carlsbad Historic Preservation Commission has selected to focus on the following
goals and tasks:
• Bring forth to City Council suggested revisions to the Carlsbad Municipal Code governing
the Historic Preservation Commission
• Confirm clarified historic site inventory via City Council
• Further educate commissioners through tours of historic sites
• Develop a Plaque Program for historic locations
• Explore additional ways of sharing information about historic site recognition
• Continue to educate the community about its history
o through support of school curriculum; 3rd grade historic art program
o through an oral history collection project in cooperation with Library's Carlsbad
History Collection
o through recorded interviews of local long-time residents
o through creating brief biographies about the City's past mayors to accompany
photos in Council Chamber
• Seek opportunities to further share and promote the city's history with the community
