Expansion testing was performed on the on-site near surface soils, remolded and tested under a surcharge of 144 lb/ft2, in accordance with Uniform Building Code Standard No. 29-2. The test results indicated an expansion index of SO or medium expansion potential. Due to the possibility the subject lot is a bedrock/fill transition lot, the age of the subject lot (+20 years), and the expansiveness of the underlying earth materials, it is our opinion the subject lot should be overexcavated. The overexcavation will require a minimum 2.5-ft overexcavation from the finish pad elevation and extending a minimum of 5-ft outside of the building footprint. The exposed surface should be scarified a minimum of 1-ft below overexcavation elevation, moisture conditioned (minimum of optimum moisture), and recompacted to +90% relative compaction prior to placement and compaction of fill material. Total and differential settlements of footings supported on the recommended zone of properly compacted fill materials are not expected to exceed 1-inch and 1/2-inches, respectively. It has been determined that the fill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density, have a safe bearing value ou]930 pounds per square foot for one foot wide continuous footings founded at a minimum depth of 'one foot below finish grade and placed five feet or more Inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes. If footings are placed closer to the exposed slopes than 5 feet inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes, these should be deepened one foot below a 1 /2 horizontal to 1 vertical line projected outward and downward from a point 5 feet horizontally Inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes. Type A Lots Avoid the use of isolated interior piers. Use 'continuous footings throughout, and place these at a minimum depth of two feet below the lowest ad jacent exterior final ground surface. Reinforce and interconnect continuously with steel bars all interior and exterior footings with one 15 bar at 3 inches above the bottom of the footings and one 05 bar placed 1 1/2 inches below the top of the stems of the footings. Exercise every effort to assure that the soil under the Foundations and slobs has a uniform moisture content, 1 percent to 3 percent greater than optimum through- out the top 3 feet below finished grade at the time of placing foundations and slab. Use raised wooden floors that span between continuous footings, or use all concrete slabs with 6 x 6 — 10/10 welded wire fabric and provide a minimum of 4 inches of clean sand beneath all concrete slab. A moisture barrier should be provided In the sand layer 2 inches below slabs under living areas. Separate garage slabs from perimeter footings by a 1/2 inch thickness of con- struction felt or equivalent, to allow independent movement of garage slab relative to perimeter footings. Assure complete separation by extending the felt over the full depth of the front thickened edge of the garage slab. Also, cut off the garage door stops at least 1/2 inch above the slab. Provide positive drainage away from all perimeter footings to a horizontal distance of at least 6 feet outside the house walls. The results of tests and observations made to inspect the compaction of filled ground placed during the major grading of this subdivision and special recommendations for construction on expansive soils were included in our interim report on this project dated October 12, 1971. This report includes the results of test Nos. 1377 to 1380, Inclusive, taken in compacted filled ground placed on Lots 92 and 185. These fills were placed on April 24, 1972 and June 13, 1972. This report includes all test data and Information not previously reported and completes our final report on La Costa Meadows Unit No. I. - The approximate areas and depths of filled ground placed under our inspection in accordance with the approved specifications are shown on the attached Drawing No. 1, entitled Location of Compacted Filled Ground. The grading plan used For the placement of filled ground was pre- pared by Rick Engineering Company and last revised January 29, 1971. The approximate locations at which test Nos. 1377 to 1380, inclusive, were taken and the Final lest results were presented on page 1-44, under the "Table of Test Results." Test No, 1 to 1376, inclusive, were presented on pages 1-1 to T-43, inclusive, of our previous report. The laboratory determinations of the maximum dry densities and optimum moisture contents of the major fill materials placed during this recent grading period are presented on page 1-1 under the "Labora- tory Test Results.' Test Nos. 1377 to 1380, inclusive, reported herein, were taken on the dates Indicated below: Test Number Date 1377 and 1378 April 24, 1972 1379 and 1380 June 13, 1972 Reviewed by Project No. 70-10-28D -2- June 28, 1972 Lc-Costa Meadows Unit No. 1 .. The final results of tests and observations Indicate that the compacted filled ground has been placed at 90 percent of maximum dry density or greater. It has been determined that the fill materials, compacted to 90 percent of the maximum dry density, have a safe bearing value of 1930 pounds per square foot for one foot wide continuous footings founded at a minimum depth and placed 5 feet or more inside the top of the compacted filled ground slopes. If footings are placed closer to the exposed slopes than 5 feet Inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes, these should be deepened one foot below a 1 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical line projected outward and downward from a point 5 feet horizontally inside the top of compacted filled ground slopes. Tests Indicate that the compacted filled ground is adequate to support the proposed wood frame dwellings without detrimental settlements. Critically expansive soils exist in the upper three feet below finished grade on.Lots 92 and 185. Therefore the special design and precautions presented for Type MA" lots In our previous Interim report dated October 12, 1971 are recommended for buildings constructed on these two lots.
