CALL TO ORDER: 4:01 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Trustees DeForest, Larson, and Sheffler (McBride, Schatt -Absent)

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes of the Library Board of Trustees regular meeting held Oct. 27, 2021.

Motion by Trustee Larson, seconded by Trustee DeForest, to approve the minutes as presented.
Motion carried, 3/0/2/0 (McBride, Schatt -Absent).
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None.
DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
1. MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: The board received the monthly library report for
October 2021. The board had questions and comments regarding reading incentive
programs, virtual programming, and the personalized reading recommendation
program.
2. LIBRARY SERVICES DURING COVID-19: The board received an update from Library &
Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson on library services during COVID-19. This
included resuming some in person events like author talk and book club; book bike visits
at various community events; mask guidelines for staff and the public; and opening
additional computers and study rooms for patron use.

3. QUARTERLY TECHNOLOGY REPORT AND UPDATE: Senior Business Systems Specialist
Devin Castel presented the Library Quarterly Technology Report including an overview
of technology projects accomplished in 2021 and future projects scheduled in early
2022.
4. 2022 LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING SCHEDULE: The Library Board of Trustees
approved the regular meeting schedule for 2022. Motion by Trustee Larson, seconded
by Trustee Sheffler, to approve the 2022 Library Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule.
Motion carried, 3/0/2/0 (McBride, Schatt -Absent).
DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Smithson updated the board on a variety of topics: staff
development week and activities around this year's theme and book Dare to Lead by Brene
Brown; staffing and recruitment update; midyear budget requests submitted to re-balance part
time to full time position ratios.
FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative Schatt was not in attendance. Library & Cultural Arts
Director Suzanne Smithson reported that the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation has a
reception and concert event planned for Dec. 11 featuring Celeste Barbier -a Holiday Cabaret.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson reported that
the Friend's bookstore holiday boutique sale began Dec. 6 and the Georgina Cole Library bookstore
opened on Dec. 1. The Carlsbad City Library bookstore will be closed from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3 and the
Georgina Cole Library will be closed from Dec. 23 to Jan. 4.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Mary Millet
reported on a variety of topics: how pleased the society is with the appointment of Senior
Librarian for Genealogy and Carlsbad History Marsha Weeks; a Community Service Award from
the Daughters of the American Revolution presented to former librarian Mary Von Orsdol; new
President Bill Peters and elected officers were installed at the Dec. 7 annual meeting; 48
volunteers were honored at the Dec. 7 annual meeting; virtual meetings will continue through
the month of March; possibility of hybrid meetings to begin in the Spring; no program meetings
are scheduled in the month of December; and membership is currently at 359 members.
LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Vice Chair DeForest shared his view on the
cultural influence libraries offer the community and is pleased with the great work being done
by the libraries.
ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair DeForest adjourned the meeting at 4:57 p.m.
