Recommendation requests received in October: o Adults – 7 o Teens – 6 o Children – 7 o Total requests for October – 20 December 8, 2021 Page 9 of 17 ITEM #1 Projects: 12. Oversized Books Collections and Technical Services (C&TS) staff created and launched a master plan to interfile oversized books into the nonfiction shelving area to improve discovery. They began by weeding (removing) materials that were in poor condition and/or outdated in both collections. As items are deselected, the regular shelves are being re-spaced to allow for the interfiling of the oversized books. Items are also being shifted to space more evenly across the shelves. This effort will improve customer service by providing a one stop browsing location for the vast majority of adult English print non-fiction and a cleaner, more balanced display of the collection. 13. STEAM Kits The Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane Children’s Division, along with the help of C&TS and Circulation Services, launched a pilot project on Oct. 1 to lend STEAM Maker Kits to children and their families. Each of the six kits includes a book and activities to complete at home. The topics are: robotics and coding, engineering gears and mazes, building and design, green energy, everyday science, and sounds/ music/ band. Library Assistant and project lead Brandon Tiongison will gather data and assess the project’s success after six months to help decide whether to expand to other locations with more kits. 14. Databases Technology Librarian Joe Burch continues work on the setup of the Workforce eResource databases from the California State Library: GetSetup, LearningExpress, Coursera and Skillshare. This service will be available to the community beginning in November and ending September 30, 2022. 15. Local Haunts The Genealogy & Carlsbad History Division launched a new web page called “Carlsbad Halloween and Haunts” that was available during the month of October. Content collected by staff featured historical Halloween photos, haunted history of the Twin Inns and other local sites, information on how to conduct genealogy cemetery research and links to catalog searches about paranormal activity in the region and cemeteries. Community Connections: 16. City and Library Partnership On Oct. 10, Bilingual Library Technicians Linsey Brizuela and Jennifer Quiroz-Avila connected with Spanish speaking community members about library services at a city sponsored event at The Flower Fields in support of the Housing Department’s outreach efforts to inform and gather feedback regarding housing locations and City Council redistricting. Book Bike - State Street Farmer’s Market Lead Librarian Darin Williamson and Library Assistant Sheri Hanlon returned to the State Street Farmer’s Market with the book bike on Oct. 20 to showcase our library services and programs. The two staff members interacted with over 307 people while handing out 80+ free books. Library staff have been invited to join the Farmer’s Market one Wednesday per month. Heard by Staff: • “I'm glad the {Exploration} lab is getting back. Barbara and I just took a class yesterday with Dadyar and Avery. The lab experience was good as always -- both the class itself, and the after-class chat.” • A patron called the Genealogy & Carlsbad History Desk asking for help obtaining a death record for a relative who died in San Diego in 1933. Library Technician Andrew Hutchinson located a death certificate number that the patron could use at the County Clerk's office to order an informational copy of the death certificate. He offered to continue researching her ancestor and the patron said that would be great. Andrew found out that the relative, Laura B. Roberts (Cox/Payne/Emerson/Fawcett), had been a vocal suffragist and a champion of workers' rights. She was a published poet and even ran for Congress in Texas on the Socialist ticket in 1906. Her campaign drew coverage across the nation as she would be the first woman ever elected to Congress at that time, should she have won (she did not). Andrew emailed several news articles and a link to Laura’s published book of poetry on her FamilySearch Profile to the patron. December 8, 2021 Page 11 of 17 UUfUl 8. PAYNE, CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS.
