The site is bounded by Grand Avenue to the north, an existing Motel 6 facility to the west, Carlsbad Village Drive to the south and the Interstate 5 offramp to the east. Recent project work summarized herein consisted of excavation and compaction of shallow subgrade materials for the southeastern portion of the proposed building pad and the construction of surrounding pavements, flatwork, utilities, and landscaping. 2.0 FILL PLACEMENT Existing subgrade materials were overexcavated in general conformance with the project geotechnical documents and plans, and such that at least 18-inches of recently compacted fill underlies the building pad and parking lot areas. Overexcavation bottoms were confirmed as firm and competent by an CTE representative, and then scarified and moisture conditioned prior to recompaction and placement of compacted fill materials, under observation and testing by a CTE representative. Fill materials were moisture conditioned, placed, and compacted in lifts at above optimum moisture content. Based on CTE’s testing, compaction was performed to a minimum 90 percent relative density, as determined by ASTM D1557. Grading was performed using standard heavy-duty construction equipment. Figure 2 presents approximate building pad compaction tests. Testing of compacted fill addressed by this report was conducted between September 2019 and June 2021 as indicated in the report attachments. Field-testing of the compacted fill soil was conducted in accordance with ASTM D-6938-17a (nuclear method). Results of the field-testing indicate that fill materials were compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent of the laboratory maximum dry density and at generally above optimum moisture content as determined by test method ASTM D-1557. A Site Index Map is provided as Figure 1. Approximate building pad compaction tests are shown on Figure 2. Tabulated results of the field compaction testing are provided in the attached Table I. Laboratory determination of the reference compaction values for the fill materials are provided in Table II, “Laboratory Test Results.” 4.0 ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION OBSERVATION All additional grading and backfilling should be observed and tested by CTE. However, prior to any future development of the site, an appropriate updated geotechnical report should be completed as necessary or required. 5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS CTE concludes that the soil engineering and engineering geologic aspects of the grading covered by this report are in substantial conformance with the approved geotechnical report (CTE, 2019) and the grading and improvement plans, and this final as-graded geotechnical report. Therefore, the recommendations provided in the referenced report remain suitable for project design and construction. No other warranty, expressed or implied, is made regarding the conclusions, recommendations and opinions expressed in this report. Variations may exist and conditions not observed or described in this report may be encountered during construction. The geotechnical recommendations herein are intended to minimize the potential for post construction movement of soils. However, even with the design and construction precautions provided, some post-construction soil movement and associated distress should be anticipated. CTE’s conclusions and recommendations are based on an analysis of the observed conditions. If conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, our office should be notified and additional recommendations, if required, will be provided.
