Subject: As-Graded Geotechnical Report
Abdi Residence, 5263 Shore Drive, Carlsbad, California
References: Christian Wheeler Engineering, Report of Preliminary Geotechnical Investigation (Report CWE
21502611.01), November 8, 2015
Ladies & Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request and our proposal dated February 14, 2018, we have prepared this report to
summarize our services during the earthwork operations at the subject site. This report presents the as-graded
geotechnical conditions of the site, our observations, the results of our laboratory testing, and the results of
relative compaction tests performed in the fills and backfills that were placed during the grading operation as
well as the preparation of subgrade and subsequent asphalt concrete placement at the project site. The
observation and testing services addressed by this report were coordinated by Hulton Development, Inc and
were provided between June 29, 2018 and June 23, 2020.
In order to assist in our understanding of the designed configuration of the project, our firm was provided
with grading plans for the site prepared by LGS Engineering, revision date January 17, 2017. Plate Nos. 1
through 3 of this report are reproduction of sheets 4 through 6 of the plans, modified to show the
approximate locations of our field tests and the relevant limits of the earthwork operation which consist of
the excavation for the basement, entryway and the patio.
INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The subject site is a developed residential lot located at 5263 Shore Drive, Carlsbad, California. Prior to the
earthwork addressed in this report, the site supported a one- and two-story, single-family residence with an
attached garage and other normally associated improvements. Topographically, the developed portions of the
CWE 2150264.10 April 5, 2022 Page 2
subject lot are relatively level. The western portion of the lot is characterized by a moderately to steeply
sloping coastal bluff, which is approximately 39 feet high. The bluff face is covered with gunite, which we
understand was first placed along the lower ±20 feet of bluff face in or around 1962. Review of the
referenced aerial photographs indicates that the upper bluff face was covered with gunite sometime between
January of 1989 and 1993.
The subject project consisted of the construction of a new two-story residence over a basement, a spa, and
other normally associated appurtenances. The proposed residence and site improvements were supported by
new conventional, shallow foundations and the basement incorporated a conventional concrete slab-on-grade
floor system. Grading consisted of cuts up to about 11 feet below existing grade for proposed basement
construction.
SCOPE OF SERVICE
The following services were provided by Christian Wheeler Engineering during the course of the earthwork
operations.
Provided observations of the earthwork operation which consisted of the basement excavation, and
removals in the entryway and patio area.
Provided field recommendations for elements of the earthwork not specifically addressed by the
referenced geotechnical report.
Recorded the approximate elevations and limits of significant geotechnical elements.
Performed in-place density tests in the fills and backfills placed within the building pad as well as the
subgrade and asphaltic concrete preparation along Shore Drive.
Determined the laboratory maximum density and optimum moisture content of soils encountered in the
earthwork.
Determined the laboratory maximum density of asphaltic concrete placed along Shore Drive.
Prepared this report, which presents a summary of our observations and results of our relative
compaction tests.
GRADING OPERATION
The earthwork addressed by this report was performed by Mike Lloyd Excavating. The site preparation
consisted of the excavation for the basement. The bottom of the excavation extended into competent old
paralic deposits. Minor (less than 2 inches) amounts of loose soils exposed at the bottom of the excavation
were compacted with a manually operated reciprocating compactor to at least 90 percent relative compaction.
CWE 2150264.10 April 5, 2022 Page 3
The approximate limits of removal are shown on the attached Plate Nos. 1 through 3. Fill materials consisting
of the on-site and imported silty sands were typically placed in relatively thin, uniform lifts to reach the
designed pad grade. Moisture-conditioning was applied as needed and compactive efforts were then
performed by means of the reciprocating compactor to attain at least 90 percent of maximum dry density.
RETAINING WALL BACKFILL OPERATION
The retaining walls associated with the staircase and spa located in the northeastern corner of the site were
backfilled using native and imported sandy soils. The backfills were placed in thin horizontal lifts, which were
watered to near optimum conditions and compacted in place by means of the reciprocating compactors to at
least 90 percent of maximum dry density.
PAVEMENT OPERATION
Within the area of the utility tie-ins, the subgrade preparation generally consisted imported silty sand being
placed to the designed grade. The soil was placed prior to our arrival on site and was compacted to 95 percent
of its maximum dry density for paved areas. Asphaltic concrete placement was monitored for its laydown
temperature during its placement. Mix temperatures were noted to be within the acceptable range of 270F
to 320F, as specified in section 302-5.5 of the Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction.
Compactive efforts were made by dual drum vibratory rollers to attain a minimum of at least 95 percent of
the maximum density.
CONCLUSIONS
It is the opinion of Christian Wheeler Engineering that the earthwork addressed by this report has been
performed in accordance with the recommendations presented in the referenced geotechnical reports, the
grading requirements of the City of Carlsbad and the California Building Code. This opinion is based upon
our observations of the earthwork operations, the results of the density tests taken in the field, and the
maximum density tests performed in our laboratory. It is our further opinion that the site is suitable for the
proposed construction.
AS-BUILT GEOLOGY
The geologic units encountered during the earthwork operations were generally consistent with those
anticipated in the referenced report of geotechnical investigation. No unforeseen, adverse geologic conditions
or features were noted by our field personal during the earthwork operation addressed herein. The earthwork
operations addressed by this report have, in our opinion, satisfactorily mitigated the potentially adverse
conditions described in the referenced report.
