Recommended Action
Adopt a resolution accepting a $19,000 donation from the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. to
support furniture restoration and interpretive exhibit design, development and installation at
Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park.
Executive Summary
The Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. has generously offered a $19,000 donation in dedicated and
direct support for furniture restoration and the design, development and installation of a new
interpretive exhibit at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park.
Carlsbad Municipal Code Section 2.08.100 requires the City Council’s approval for the city
accept donations that exceed $5,000.
Discussion
The Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. is a nonprofit chartered California Educational Corporation.
Its mission is to partner with the City of Carlsbad to increase community awareness of Leo
Carrillo, the man, and Leo Carrillo Ranch, the resource made available to the public as a whole
and to educators in particular. The organization raises funds through membership, events, and
private donations. This donation will provide for furniture restoration, and interpretive exhibit
design, development and installation at the primary bedroom in the hacienda.
The City of Carlsbad recently acquired the original (1937) primary bedroom furnishings
belonging to the home’s occupants, Leo and Deedie Carrillo. The furniture was sold at an estate
sale by the family to a private buyer in 1977. This is the first time the furniture will be returned
to and displayed at the historic park, in the original context based on period archival photos.
Thanks to the Friends of Carrillo Ranch’s generosity and support with this donation, the
furniture will be carefully restored, and an interpretive exhibit will be designed, developed and
installed featuring images, artifacts and memorabilia from the Carrillo Ranch archives, detailing
the Carrillo family’s lives. The new exhibit is expected to premier in a year from commencement
of design.

Fiscal Analysis
The donation from the Friends of Carrillo Ranch will augment the Parks & Recreation operating
budget, providing for the restoration of the primary bedroom furnishings, and the design,
development and installation of a new interpretive exhibit at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park.
Next Steps
A letter of appreciation will be sent on behalf of the City of Carlsbad and the Parks & Recreation
Department, acknowledging the ongoing partnership and support of the Friends of Carrillo
Ranch, in advocating for Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park’s educational and interpretive
programming. Staff will then prepare a professional services agreement for a firm specializing in
historic materials preservation and display to perform the described scope of work.
Environmental Evaluation
This action does not constitute a “project” within the meaning of the California Environmental
Quality Act under Public Resources Code section 21065 in that it has no potential to cause
either a direct physical change in the environment or a reasonably foreseeable indirect physical
change in the environment and therefore does not require environmental review.
Public Notification and Outreach
This item was noticed in keeping with the state's Ralph M. Brown Act and it was available for
public viewing and review at least 72 hours before the scheduled meeting date.

CARRILLO RANCH, INC. TO THE CITY OF CARLSBAD'S PARKS & RECREATION
DEPARTMENT
EXHIBIT 1
WHEREAS, the City of Carlsbad has determined that the Friends of Carrillo Ranch, Inc. has
generously offered a $19,000 donation to the City of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department; and
WHEREAS, acceptance of this donation from the Friends of Carrillo Ranch will allow for, and
directly support, furniture restoration and interpretive exhibit design, development and installation at
Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park; and
WHEREAS, acceptance of this donation is consistent with the Friends of Carrillo Ranch's mission
of partnership with the City of Carlsbad and the development and implementation of educational and
interpretive programs at Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Carlsbad, California, as
follows:
1. That the above recitations are true and correct.
2. That the City Council accepts, with gratitude, the $19,000 donation from the Friends of
Carrillo Ranch, Inc.
