Carlsbad City Library
Monthly Library Report
March 2022
Highlights:
1.1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
The Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane had their first community member reach the
initial milestone for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten on March 14. Staff celebrated with
a young 4-year-old patron when he came in to receive his reward of bubbles, and he
was so excited to be able to select his own color. He started reading Jan. 3 and it took
until March 14 to finish 250 books!! The program has 129 registered readers and 4,451
books read.
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an easy, fun, and free program that puts children on
the path to success. This program is based on evidence from the American Academy of
Pediatrics that reading regularly with young children stimulates brain development and
strengthens parent-child relationships. Parents who read with their child(ren) build
language, literacy and social-emotional skills that last a lifetime.
2.Spanish Author Talk with Carla Montero (Library Learning Center)
Bilingual Services held an exclusive virtual talk with Carla Montero, author of “El
invierno en tu rostro” and “La tabla esmeralda”, on Tuesday, March 29. Book club
members had the pleasure of asking the author questions about her career trajectory as
a writer, her writing process, and the two books read by our book club members. Staff
expressed appreciation to Ms. Montero for making time to meet with us despite the
time difference between California (11 a.m.) and Madrid, Spain (7 p.m.).

3.Author Visit
The Carlsbad City Library hosted award-winning author Reyna Grande to discuss her
sweeping new historical saga, “A Ballad of Love and Glory” on March 26. The 53 patrons
in attendance enjoyed an hour-long discussion and Q&A. Reyna’s received an American
Book Award, the El Premio Aztlán Literary Award, and the International Latino Book
Award. Library staff received a lot of positive feedback, including one patron stating
that in her twelve years as a Carlsbad resident, she felt seen by having someone like her
and her 10-year-old daughter featured at her local library.
4.Exploration HUB
One of the Exploration HUB patrons has been using the VCR/DVD Player and Hi8 Video
Player to convert old home videos to .mp4 files. Staff have watched her laugh, cry, be
frustrated with the technology and be so happy with the staff and their assistance
during her HUB Station reservations. It has been a wonderful experience for everyone
involved with the conversion project.
5.Virtual Tween Scene
On March 7, a program for teens entitled Celebrate Women’s History Month with
Respect Her Crank! Sounds of Blackness was presented. Tweens listened and learned
about the fabulous singers of American History. Some of their favorites were Josephine
Baker and Billie Holiday. They asked to hear Bessie Smith’s Back Water Blues twice!
6.Literacy Services
The Southern California Library Literacy Network (SCLLN) hosted its Writer to Writer
event on March 12, in Buena Park. Writer to Writer is an annual writing challenge for
adult learners enrolled in California Library Literacy Services programs. Carlsbad City
Library’s learner Nyla H. won the Beginning Writer category and read her first-place
letter to over 70 attendees.

Programs:
7.Book Clubs
•The Tuesday Night Book Club (Georgina Cole Library)
Lead Librarian Madelyn Horton led of group of 11 participants in the Tuesday Night
Book Club’s discussion of “American Baby: A Mother, A Child, and the Shadow
History of Adoption” by Gabrielle Glaser on March 1. Besides offering an illuminating
lesson about a little-known topic in recent American history, this sensitive topic
touched readers deeply and led to an intense and personal discussion.
•First Wednesday Book Club (Carlsbad City Library)
Librarian Liza Blue led the First Wednesday Book Club, who were very happy to
resume meeting in person for the first time in nearly two years. 16 people attended,
some of whom had only participated by Zoom webinar in the past and never met
the group in person. There was a warm and congenial energy in the room as they
delved into a very meaty discussion about “Caste” by Isabel Wilkerson. One member
who has been in the club for at least ten years said, “This is the most important book
this club has ever read.” Wilkerson’s deeply researched narrative shows how
America today and throughout history has been shaped by a hidden caste system.
•Evening Spanish Book Club (Learning Center)
Community Outreach Supervisor Mayra Turchiano facilitated the virtual book
discussion of “La biblioteca de la media noche” by Matt Haig. In “The Midnight
Library”, somewhere beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains
an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the
story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have
lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all
wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the
library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?
8.North San Diego Genealogical Society Partnership
•Virtual DIG: DNA Interest Group – Using DNA Tools on GEDMatch
Andy Lee of Family History Fanatics demonstrated the tools that GEDMatch provides
to help with family history research. 73 people attended the March 19 program.
•Virtual Genealogy Program Meeting – Really??? Proving and Refuting Family Lore
Mary Kircher Roddy presented ways to dig deeper and find corroborating evidence
to separate truth from fiction when it comes to family lore. 77 people attended the
March 22 meeting.

Services:
9.Carlsbad Seed Libraries
The Carlsbad Seed Library encourages community members to try growing their own
food. Patrons can both take seeds and donate them to the seed collections at each of
the three library locations. Community members are encouraged to take no more than
three seed packets per month per family. Staff have distributed 1,853 seed packets at
the three library locations since the program’s inception on December 13.
Special Projects:
10.Adult New Reader Project
Staff members from Literacy Services completed writing drafts of their books as part of
the LSTA-funded Adult New Reader Project. The goal of the project is to publish over
100 literacy-level books that will be made available online for free, or for purchase in
print, to build literacy collections in libraries. Adult literacy staff received training on
how to write at accessible reading levels for adult learners, then put those skills to work
by publishing their work. Community Outreach Supervisor Carrie Scott met with
Collections & Technical Services to discuss the plan for cataloguing and shelving this
unique collection in the Literacy Services’ collection. So far, Carlsbad’s Literacy Services
staff has published six books.
11.Cultural Arts Resource Guide
In the month of February, Adult & Teen Services worked with Cultural Arts to create a
resource guide for the artists featured in the Cannon Art Gallery for the “Reimagined:
The Artist’s Book “exhibition.
Community Connections:
12.Books To Go
Lead Librarian Darin Williamson visited Buena Vista Elementary School on March 22,
with the book bike. Over 2 hours, he spoke with about 250 students in grades first – fifth
and each student received either an age-appropriate book or a seed packet.

13.Village Voices
On March 8, Lead Librarian Darin Williamson and Principal Librarian Laura Mendez
attended Village Voices and learned about the Public Works Department and Carlsbad’s
transition to trash services with the community. It was a great opportunity to refresh old
contacts and make new contacts in the village, where the library holds most of our book
bike community outreach events. There were 45 people at the meeting.
Patron Stories (heard around the library):
“Hello Librarian Angel! Thank you SO MUCH for your quick reply and renewal of my library card!
I am enormously relieved! This library card has been such a godsend to me--you have no idea! I
hope you and all the other angels from the library have a great day!” Diane
“That was the best ending to Little Red Riding Hood I have ever or will ever hear!” A patron
referring to the alternate ending of a new puppet show production for Storytime Theatre
created by Library Technician Sheryl Goto and Library Assistant Angelica Mejia.
