Hourly Employee Celebration After being postponed for two years, on May 20, Library & Cultural Arts staff gathered at Aviara Community Park and celebrated service milestones of part-time staff. Seventy- nine staff members were honored for a combined 890 years of service! This represents awards from 2020, 2021, and 2022. Programs: 2. Early Learning Storytime Early Learning Storytime, designed for families with children ages 0-4 and focusing on pre-reading skills, has steadily grown at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane to over 100 participants since bringing back in-person programming in April. Programs were held every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. during the month of May, outside in the Children’s/Wi-Fi Garden to accommodate the large crowds. The program is led by Children’s Librarian Angelica Mejia and assisted by Library Technicians Brenna Farris, Kristin Winfrey and Linda Arce. Bilingual Storytime, held at the Library Learning Center, has also seen an increase from just six participants in January to 74 participants in May. 3. Exploration HUB During the month of May, the Exploration HUB offered eight classes. Patrons learned how to create and print 3D designs using Tinkercad.com, use the digital conversion equipment and scanner, create a business card using Adobe InDesign and enjoyed learning how to code using Arduino kits. The HUB continues to be open during non-class times for individual use. June 22, 2022 ITEM 1 Page 2 of 6 Art designed by patrons in Tinkercad and printed with the HUB’s 3D printer 4. Genealogy & Carlsbad History Programs The Carlsbad Senior Center invited Senior Librarian Marsha Weeks to present an overview of the genealogy resources available at the Georgina Cole Library. This partnership program was presented on May 31 at the Senior Center and was also offered virtually via Zoom. A total of 28 people participated in the program (16 in person and 12 via Zoom). 5. Literacy Services Two adult literacy learners, Laura C. and Mihoko Z., graduated from the virtual Adult Learner Leadership Institute. The Adult Learner Leadership Institute teaches leadership and communication skills to help adult learners engage more fully in their family life, work and in the community. The three-session Institute was offered through the California Library Literacy Services program and was funded through the Library Services and Technology Act. Literacy Services continued to welcome new tutors and learners back into the building after a two-year hiatus. Two tutor orientations were held on May 5 and May 10, and tutor training was presented on May 26 by Library Technicians Valane Jones and Hannah Nelson for three prospective tutors. 6. Summer Teen Volunteer Program Librarian Ashleigh Hvinden and Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo monitored and facilitated the application process for the teen volunteers. Applications were accepted from May 1 through May 27 with a final count of 175 volunteers registered. Volunteer orientations will take place in June. Volunteers talk to children participating in the Summer Reading Adventure program about what they are reading, assist patrons with registering for the program, and answer routine questions about the program. Volunteers also provide support to library staff with programs such as storytimes, Paws to Read, and Tuesday Afternoon Adventures. During down-time, volunteers assist with library beautification by keeping books on shelves neat and in order. On average, each library location will use 10-15 hours of teen volunteer support each day. June 22, 2022 ITEM 1 Page 3 of 6 Services: 7.Homebound The library welcomed three new participants to our Homebound service in May. Homebound participants are those who cannot physically make it to a library location and are assigned volunteers who deliver their library materials to their home. There are now 19 Carlsbad residents taking part in this program which brings participation to an all-time high. This increase is believed to be the result of promotion in city publications, word-of-mouth, and outreach activities. 8.Giveaway Books The San Diego Council on Literacy received funding to buy books for North County organizations who serve children. As a founding affiliate of the San Diego Council on Literacy, the Carlsbad City Library Learning Center received over 1,100 children’s books from Scholastic. Other North County recipients include affiliate programs Oceanside Public Library, Education Begins in the Home, North County Family Justice Center and the Kiwanis Club. The books will be distributed through various outreach events in conjunction with the Summer Reading Adventure program. 9.State Parks Passes The library received an additional nine State Parks Passes, bringing the total number of passes in circulation to 12. This is great news since the passes are very popular. Patrons can check passes out just like library books and use them for free access to the California State Parks system. Passes can be checked out for up to 10 days. Community Connections: 10.Aviara Oaks Elementary Library Assistant Brandon Tiongison provided a lesson on paper circuits to 130 students for Aviara Oaks Elementary School’s Science Day. Paper circuits are essentially low- voltage circuits that can be paired with LED lights on paper and help teach the basics of electricity and circuitry. 11.Sage Creek High School Sage Creek High School Bilingual Community Liaison Julieta Thomas invited Community Outreach Supervisor Mayra Turchiano to join and present at the first meeting for Sage Creek High School Spanish-speaking parents on May 16. Mayra shared information on teen volunteer opportunities through the Summer Reading Teen Volunteer program, the Summer Reading Adventure Program and encouraged parents to join one of the various adult book clubs in order to model positive reading behavior. Five parents signed up to join the Spanish book club, and several others inquired about the Summer Reading Volunteer Program and Career Online High School. 45 people were in attendance for this event. Altogether, the book bike promoted library services, handed out free books, and shared information about Summer Reading Adventure to more than 900 people in May. 13.English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) On May 31, Community Outreach Supervisor Mayra Turchiano spoke with ELAC families about the many services and benefits the Carlsbad City Library offers to families in support of their lifelong learning goals. After the presentation, families were eager to learn more about the Summer Reading Adventure Program, Career Online High School, adult book clubs, and the children’s S.T.E.AM. kits. 62 people were in attendance for this event. Grow Your Garden Lead Librarian Darin Williamson hosted a community crop sharing event at the Georgina Cole Library on May 28 where 97 patrons brought succulents, oranges, lemons, collard greens, rosemary, and seeds to share. Jay Klopfenstein, president of the Carlsbad Community Garden, gave a presentation on “Planting for Pollinators” which advised attendees on how to better design and plant their gardens in order to provide helpful habitats for bees, butterflies and birds. Special Projects: 14.California Library Literacy Services Strategic Planning Committee Community Outreach Supervisor Carrie Scott completed a three-year commitment on the California Library Literacy Services Strategic Planning Committee. The committee consisted of literacy coordinators throughout the state and accomplished the following actions: •Developed a strategic plan, including the mission, values and literacy program essentials. •Completed a program essentials survey to allow programs to assess their compliance with these essentials. •Created a core competencies handout and self-assessment for program coordinators. •Developed materials and training for six California Library Literacy Services effective practices.
