Ninyo & Moore provided compaction testing services during the redevelopment of the Equinox
project at 7710 El Camino Real in Carlsbad, California. Our services included compaction testing of
the earthwork and paving operations performed for the project. This report summarizes our services
and presents the results of our field and laboratory testing.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project included the redevelopment of the site at 7710 El Camino Real in Carlsbad, California.
As part of the redevelopment, additional sewer lines were installed beneath the existing building,
portions of the building’s interior concrete slab-on-grade were replaced, and the parking lot was
reconfigured. The reconfiguration included the construction of new curbs-and-gutters, cross gutters,
and asphalt concrete (AC) pavements.

FIELD COMPACTION TESTING
Our field technician was onsite on an on-call basis to test compacted fill soil, sewer trench backfill,
subgrade soils, and aggregate base materials. Our field technician was also onsite full-time to
observe and test the AC paving operations. Field density tests were performed by our technician in
general accordance with the current version of ASTM International (ASTM) D 6938 (Nuclear Gauge
Method). The specified relative compaction for compacted fill soil, sewer trench backfill, building pad
subgrade, curb-and-gutter subgrade, and aggregate base materials beneath the building’s interior
concrete slab-on-grade was 90 percent, as evaluated by ASTM International (ASTM) test method
D 1557. The specified relative compaction for cross gutter subgrade, parking lot subgrade, and
aggregate base materials placed in the paved areas was 95 percent, as evaluated by ASTM D 1557.
The specified relative compaction of AC materials placed during paving operations was 95 percent,
as compared to the material’s Hveem unit weight. The results of our field density tests are presented
in Attachment A and the test locations are shown on Figure 1.
LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory testing was performed on the soils and aggregate base materials used during the
earthwork operations to evaluate their modified Proctor and optimum moisture content relationships.
The modified Proctor densities and optimum moisture contents were evaluated in general
accordance with the ASTM D 1557, and the results are summarized in Table 1. The modified Proctor
densities and optimum moisture contents of the aggregate base material represented by Soil Type
Numbers 2 and 6, were provided by the material supplier and are also presented in Table 1.
The Hveem unit weights for the AC materials were provided by the supplier. Soil Type Number 101,
for the paving on April 16, 2016, had a Hveem unit weight of 146.8 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). Soil
Type Number 10, for the paving on August 16, 2016, had a Hveem unit weight of 143.1 pcf.
SUMMARY
The field density tests performed during the earthwork operations for the subject project generally
indicated the specified relative compactions, after retesting the reworked areas. Based on our
observations and the results of our field and laboratory tests, it is the opinion of Ninyo & Moore that
the earthwork and paving operations were performed in general accordance with the referenced
reports (Ninyo & Moore, 2015a & 2015b) and the project plans (R.A. Smith National, 2015).

LIMITATIONS
The compaction testing services outlined in this report have been conducted in accordance with
current practice and the standard of care exercised by geotechnical consultants performing similar
tasks in this area. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made regarding the observations and
conclusions expressed in this report. The reported test results represent the relative compaction and
moisture content at the locations tested. It is important to note that the precision of field density tests
and the modified Proctor tests is not exact and variations should be expected. The reported locations
and elevations of the density tests were estimated from construction staking and the referenced
plans (R.A. Smith National, 2015). Further accuracy is not implied.
