Asymtek, located at 2765 Loker Avenue in the City of Carlsbad, California.
This report is intended to help both the owners and the fire department in expediting plan
review and effectively determine the requirements necessary to meet the Fire Code. This
report is based on the 2013 Editions of the California Fire Code and the Building Code,

3.1 Building Construction & Design
The proposed tenant improvements will take place within a fully sprinklered, two-story
building of Type V-B construction (Attachment 41). Nordson Asymtek will occupy the
entire 69,324 ft2 building. See section 6 of this report for exposures, allowable building
areas and occupancy separation requirements.
3.2 Occupancies
The building is classified overall as A, B, F-i and S-i occupancy, as defined by CBC 302-
311 (Attachment #2). Per CBC 508.2, the A Occupancy on the first floor is <10% of the
overall building and considered as accessory use. The following is a square footage

4.1.4.2 ESFR Sprinkler System Separation
Per NFPA-13 Section 8.4.6.4 (Attachment #9), where ESFR sprinkler systems are installed
adjacent to sprinkler systems with standard-response sprinklers, a draft curtain of
noncombustible construction and at least 2 feet in depth shall be required to separate the
two areas. A clear aisle of at least 4 feet centered below the draft curtain shall be
maintained for separation.
4.1.4.3 Protection of Steel Columns
Per CFC 3208.4 and NFPA-13 Sections 16.1.4.1(3) and 17.1.4.1(4) (Attachment 49), where
fireproofing of building columns is not provided and storage heights are in excess of 15 ft,
protection of building columns within the rack structure or vertical rack members
supporting the building shall be protected by the installation of ESFR sprinklers at the
ceiling. Sprinkler Design Areas 41, #2, and #3 meet this requirement.
4.1.4.4 Fixed Obstructions
Per NFPA-13 Sections 8.5.5.3.1 and 8.5.5.3.1.1 (Attachment 49), fire sprinklers are not
required under fixed obstruction or open grate flowing unless their width is in excess of 4 ft.
4.1.4.5 Ceiling Slopes
Per NFPA-13 Section 12.1.2 (Attachment 49), the sprinkler system criteria specified are
intended to apply to buildings with ceiling slopes not exceeding 2 in 12 (16.7 percent)
4.1.4.6 ESFR & Construction Type
S Per NFPA-13 Section 8.4.6.3 and Table 8.12.2.2.1 (Attachment #9), protection using ESFR
sprinkler systems is not allowed in areas with obstructed combustible construction.
4.1.4.7 ESFR with Open Top Containers & Solid Shelves
Per NFPA- 13 Section 17.2.3.1.1 (Attachment 49), ESFR protection shall not apply to open-
top containers or racks with solid shelves.
4.1.5 Offices - Outside the Scope
The following requirements are based on NFPA-13 (2013 Edition) (Attachment #10):
CFC Occupancy Classification: B
NFPA 13 Occupancy: Light hazard
Design Density Proposed: 0.1/1,500
Hose Stream: 100 gpm for combined inside and outside hose
stream demand.
4.1.6 Other Areas - Outside the Scope
Other areas, including manufacturing, are outside the scope of this report. See separate
hazardous materials fire code compliance report.

42 Alarm/Monitoring
is Per CFC 903.4 (Attachment #11), all valves controlling the water supply for automatic
sprinkler systems, pumps, tanks, water levels and temperatures, critical air pressures, and
water-flow switches on all sprinkler systems (if serving >20 sprinklers) shall be electrically
supervised by a listed fire alarm control unit. Alarm, supervisory and trouble signals shall
be distinctly different and shall be automatically transmitted to an approved supervising
station or, when approved by the fire code official, shall sound an audible signal at a
constantly attended location. One exterior approved audible device, located on the exterior
of the building in an approved location, shall be connected to each automatic sprinkler
system. Such sprinkler water-flow alarm devices shall be activated by water flow
equivalent to the flow of a single sprinkler of the smallest orifice size installed in the
system. Where a fire alarm system is installed, actuation of the automatic sprinkler system
shall actuate the building fire alarm system. Visual alarm notification appliances shall not
be required except when required by Section 907.
43 Building Access - Doors & Roads
Per CFC Table 3206.2 (Attachment 412), access doors are required for high-piled storage
areas of High Hazard/Group A Plastic commodities stored in an areas more than 2,500 ft2.
Per CFC 3206.6 (Attachment 912), where building access is required, fire apparatus access
roads shall be provided within 150 feet of all portions of the exterior walls of buildings
used for high-piled storage.
Access doors shall be accessible without the use of a ladder. A minimum of one access
door shall be provided in each 100 lineal feet, or fraction thereof, of the exterior walls that
face required fire apparatus access roads. The required access doors shall be distributed
such that the lineal distance between adjacent access doors does not exceed 100 feet.
Access doors shall not be less than 3 feet in width and 6 feet 8 inches in height. Roll-up
doors shall not be used unless approved. Only approved locking devices shall be used.
Per CFC 503.2 (Attachment 412), fire apparatus access roads shall have an unobstructed
width of not less than 20 feet, exclusive of shoulders, except for approved security gates in
accordance with Section 503.6, and an unobstructed vertical clearance of not less than 13
feet 6 inches. The fire code official shall have the authority to require an increase in the
minimum access widths where they are inadequate for fire or rescue operations. Fire
apparatus access roads shall be designed and maintained to support the imposed loads of
fire apparatus and shall be surfaced so as to provide all-weather driving capabilities. The
required turning radius of a fire apparatus access road shall be determined by the fire code
official. Dead-end fire apparatus access roads in excess of 150 feet in length shall be
provided with an approved area for turning around fire apparatus. The grade of the fire
apparatus access road shall be within the limits established by the fire code official based
on the fire department's apparatus. The angle of approach and departure for fire apparatus
access roads shall be within the limits established by the fire code official based on the fire
department's apparatus.

Access roads and access doors are existing and have been previously approved as part of
S the shell building. One access door exists along the plan north, and one access door exists
along the plan west of high piled storage design area #1 [Main Warehouse]. Additional
doors may be required. Final location and number of access doors is pending fire
department approval.
44 Smoke and Heat Removal
4.4.1 Design Area #1
Per CFC Table 3206.2 (Attachment #13), smoke and heat removal is required for high-
piled storage of High Hazard/Group A Plastic Commodities stored in areas >2,500 ft2.
CFC Table 3206.2 footnote j, which would not required smoke and heat removal when
protected by an ESFR sprinkler system, has been removed as amended by the City of
Carlsbad.
As of July 1, 2015, CFC 910.3 (Attachment 413) outlining the design and installation
requirement for smoke and heat vents has been updated as follows:
Listing and labeling. Smoke and heat vents are required to be listed and labeled to
indicate their compliance with FM 4430, ICC-ED AC 331, or UL 793.
Smoke and heat vent locations. Smoke and heat vents shall be located 30 feet or
more from adjacent lot lines and fire walls and 10 feet or more from fire barriers. . Vents shall be uniformly located within the roof in the areas of the building where
the vents are required to be installed by Section 910.2, with consideration given to
roof pitch, sprinkler location and structural members.
Smoke and heat vent area. The required aggregate area of smoke and heat vents
shall be calculated as follows: A = V/9000.
Maintenance. Smoke and heat vents shall be maintained in an operative condition.
Smoke and heat vents shall be maintained in accordance with NFPA 204. Fusible
links for smoke and heat vents shall be replaced whenever fused, damaged or
painted.
The aggregate area of smoke and heat vents in buildings equipped throughout with an
automatic sprinkler system to be calculated as follows: A = V/9000
V = Volume of the Storage Area = 34.5 ft x 6,483 ft2 = 223,664 ft3
A = Required Aggregate Vent Area = 223,664 ft' / 9,000 = 25 ft2
Based on CFC 910.3.3, one smoke and heat vents I4'x8'1 is required.
Note: 6,483 sq ft is based on the high piled storage/racking area plus 15' beyond.

4.4.2 Design Area #2 & #3
S On behalf Nordson, we are requesting to waive the requirements for smoke and heat vents
in Design Areas #2 and #3. This request is due to the following (Attachment #14):
The Finished Goods & the Shipping/Crating area portion of the facility is classified
conservatively as a Class IV commodity. The Finished Goods is mainly heavy metal
equipment with small amounts of plastics.
The area is approximately 70 ft from Area #1
The area is less than 2,636 sq ft
o When calculating the number of smoke and heat vents for the area plus 15 ft
beyond for the finished goods area and up to walls for the shipping/crating:
V = Volume of the Storage Area = 34.5 ft x 5,313 ft2 = 183,299 ft3
A = Required Aggregate Vent Area = 183,299 ft3 / 9000 = 20 ft2 = 0.64 vents
4.5 Draft Curtains
Per CFC Table 3206.2 (Attachment #15), draft curtains are not required in high-piled
storage areas of High Hazard/Group A Plastic commodities where the building is provided
with fire sprinklers.
4.6 Portable Fire Extinguishers
S Per CFC 906 and 3206.10 (Attachment #16), portable fire extinguishers shall be installed in
the following locations:
In new and existing Group B, F-i and S occupancies
Where required by the sections indicated in Table 906.1.
Per CFC Table 906.3(1) & 906.3(2) (Attachment #15), the following is the proposed fire
extinguisher type and layout:
Storage Areas: 4-A:20-B:C @ Travel Distance < 50 Feet
The owners agree to comply with the requirements for fire extinguishers. One extinguisher
may provide coverage to a maximum of 4000 ft2. Fire extinguisher types and locations will
be provided by the owners or fire extinguisher vendor and approved by the fire department.
Portable fire extinguishers shall be located in conspicuous locations where they will be
readily accessible and immediately available for use. These locations shall be along
normal paths of travel, unless the fire code official determines that the hazard posed
indicated the need for placement away from normal paths of travel. Portable fire
extinguishers shall not be obstructed or obscured from view. In rooms or areas in which
visual obstruction cannot be completely avoided, means shall be provided to indicate the
location of extinguishers.

4.7 Aisle Widths
Per CFC 3206.9.1.1 (Attachment #17), aisles in sprinklered buildings shall be a minimum
of 44 inches. Per CFC 3206.9.1 (Exception 1) cross aisles used only for employee access
between aisles shall be a minimum of 24 inches in width.
Dead ends greater than 50 feet in high-piled storage areas are not recommended
(Attachment #17).
Nordson Asymtek agrees to meet the above requirements and to maintain a minimum of 4'-
0" aisle widths within the rack storage area. Any aisles <3'-6" will be treated as a flue
space and the racks treated as multiple-row racks.
4.8 Housekeeping & Maintenance
Per CFC 3205 (Attachment #18), the following are general maintenance and safety
requirements, of which Nordson Asymtek agrees to comply with:
The structural integrity of racks shall be maintained.
Smoking shall be prohibited. Approved "NO SMOKING" signs shall be conspicuously
posted.
When restocking is not being conducted, aisles shall be kept clear of storage, waste
materials and debris. Fire department access doors, aisles and exit doors shall be
unobstructed. During restocking operations using manual stocking methods, a
minimum unobstructed aisle width of 24 inches of the required aisle width shall be
maintained in 48 inch or smaller aisles, and a minimum unobstructed aisle width of
one-half of the required aisle width shall be maintained in aisles greater than 48 inches.
During mechanical stocking operations, a minimum unobstructed aisle width of 44
inches shall be maintained.
4.9 Flue Spaces
Per CFC 3208.3 and Table 3208.3 (Attachment 419), flue spaces shall be maintained for
rack storage. Where required by the fire code official, required flue spaces in rack storage
shall be equipped with approved devices to protect the required flue space. Such devices
shall not be moved or modified.
4.9.1 Sprinkler Design Area #1 & #2:
CFC Table 3208.3, the following are required flue spaces for rack storage
Single Row Racks: Transverse - 3-inches, vertically aligned
Longitudinal - Not Required
Double Row Racks: Transverse - 3-inches, vertically aligned
Longitudinal - 6-inches
4.9.2 Sprinkler Design Area #3: . CFC Table 3208.3, the following are required flue spaces for rack storage

A complete exit analysis is outside the scope of this report and, when required, will be
provided by the Architect of Record. The following general egress requirements apply to
the proposed sprinklered occupancies (Attachment #20):

Per CBC Table 1016.1, exit access travel distance shall not exceed 300 feet.
Per CBC 1018.4 Exception 2, dead ends through common path of egress shall not
exceed 50 feet.
5.2 Manufacturing [F-I Occupancy] - Outside the

Per CBC 1005.3.2. Exception 1, egress width components other than stairways shall be

6. Exposures
6.1 Occupancy Separation
Nordson Asymtek is classified as an A, B, F-i and S-i occupancy.
Based on CBC Table 508.4 (Attachment #21), the following occupancy separations are
required in a fully sprinklered building:
Between B, F-i and S- 1: No separation required
Between B/F-i/S-1 and accessory A occupancy: No separation required
Between B/F-i/S-1 and A occupancy: 1-hour
6.2 Separation of High-Piled Storage Areas
Per CFC 3206.3.2.1 (Attachment 422), the aggregate of all high-piled storage areas within a
building shall be used for the application of Table 3206.2 unless such areas are separated
from each other by i-hour fire barrier walls constructed in accordance with the California
Building Code. Openings in such walls shall be protected by opening protective assemblies
having a i-hour fire protection rating.
Nordson Asymtek occupies the entire building; therefore separation between Nordson
Asymtek's high piled storage areas and adjacent tenant spaces do not apply.
6.3 Allowable Area and Side yards
The building is existing. See architectural plans.

7. Conclusion
It is the opinion of Klausbruckner & Associates that the above will meet the requirements,
and/or intent of the 2013 Edition of the California Fire Code, the 2013 Edition of the
California Building Code, and the 2013 Edition of NFPA- 13 Standard for the Installation
of Sprinkler Systems, for the type of occupancy and storage.
