Motion by Trustee Sheffler, seconded by Trustee Schatt, to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried, 3/0/1/1 (DeForest -Absent, Moran -Abstain). PUBLIC COMMENT: None DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS: 1. INTRODUCTION OF NEW TRUSTEE: Director Smithson introduced the Library Board of Trustees newly appointed trustee Laurel Moran. 2. ELECT CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR: Trustees agreed to discuss the election of Chair and Vice Chair at the next Library Board of Trustees meeting. 3. ELECT REPRESENTATIVE TO CARLSBAD LIBRARY & ARTS FOUNDATION: Trustees agreed to discuss the election of a representative to the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation at the next Library Board of Trustees meeting. 4. MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: The board received and discussed the monthly library report for June 2022. Trustee Schatt asked about the timeline for relaunching the audio/video streaming service. 5. SEMI ANNUAL DONATION REPORT: Senior Management Analyst Fiona Everett presented to the board the semi annual donation report on donations received for the period of January to June 2022. Trustee Schatt asked about how other commissions and support organizations · share information regarding donations. July 27, 2022 Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 6. QUARTERLY TECHNOLOGY REPORT: Senior Business Systems Specialist Devin Castel presented the Library Quarterly Technology Report for the past two quarters. The report included an overview of the number of computers, wireless and library website sessions and an update on recently completed and upcoming library technology projects. Trustee Schatt asked about fine fees and lost item fees. Trustee Moran asked about in house computer sessions and how a session is counted and desktop computer usa~e. 7. GENEALOGY & CARLSBAD HISTORY OVERVIEW: Senior Librarian Marsha Weeks presented an overview of the programs and services provided by the Genealogy & Carlsbad History division. Trustee Sheffler asked about digitizing newspapers, esp. the Carlsbad Journal. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Smithson updated the board on a variety of topics: fines and fees schedule set to be implemented Sept 1, 2022; recruitment for open positions; TGIF Concerts in the Parks continues; Georgina Cole Library will host a worldwide bell ringing ceremony in cooperation with Carlsbad's sister city, Futtsu, Japan on Aug. 5, 2022; Summer Reading Adventure program continues through Aug. 6, 2022; Harvest Unleashed search program implemented; author visit event with Lynne Cox discussing her book "Tales of Al: The Water Rescue Dog"; Paws to Read event; first Teen Art Show; facilities safety and security review; audio visual upgrade for the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium and William D. Cannon Art Gallery; honorific naming of the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane courtyard for Ann Kulchin approved by City Council and staff is working on signage design; first floor redesign of the Library Learning Center launching; fencing around dirt parking lot located next to the Cole Library; broken window being replaced at the Cole Library; quarterly blood drive at the Dove Library; San Diego Registrar of Voters considering drop off ballot boxes at library locations; and staff is working with the Centre for Organization Effectiveness on strategic planning. FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative Schatt shared an update on the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation finances and City Council's acceptance of the foundation's $188,000 donation. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson reported The Friends of the Carlsbad Library discussed declines in membership; and the Friends are continuing to look for volunteers. Director Smithson thanked The Friends of the Carlsbad Library for providing books and financial support of the 2022 Summer Reading Adventure program. GROWTH MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT: Representatives Sheffler updated the board on the committee's work. July 27, 2022 Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Mary Millet expressed gratitude for the library pursuing and making progress in becoming a FamilySearch Affiliate Library; discussions are ongoing regarding if the society will continue hybrid meetings; social media presence has increased; two scholarships available for members; and the society's August newsletter lead article on immigration. LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: Chair McBride discussed a recent news segment on the libraries of the future and encouraged staff and trustees to view.
