Highlights:
1.Homeless Resource Fair
Carlsbad City Library Learning Center was the host site for a Homeless Resource Fair,
organized by the CARE Center of San Diego and in partnership with the city’s Housing &
Homeless Services Department. There were 13 providers serving community members
including the Homeless Court program, DMV (ID) services, showers, haircuts, child
support services, case workers, shelter referrals, public assistance, library cards and free
books, and help caring for pets. An estimated 50 people were helped. The library gave
away books and information on library services with particular emphasis on the Career
Online High School program. The following is an article about the event from the San
Diego Union-Tribune newspaper:

4. Virtual Read & Play Summer Club
Staff facilitated the Read & Play Summer Club virtually on June 16, 23, and 30. The
group discussed the book “Camp Time in California” by Mary Pope Osborne from the
Magic Tree House Series. Participants also played word games and participated in
various activities based on the book.
5. S’mores Teen Kits
The Summer Reading Adventure theme of “Read Beyond the Beaten Path” was the
camp focus of S’mores Kits for teens. Teens registered to pick up a kit at their preferred
library location. Kits included all items needed to make s’mores and a list of
recommended books to accompany the adventure.
6. Baby Rhyme Time
Programming for our youngest patrons ages 0-18 months returned to the Georgina Cole
Library with a total of 74 attendees across three dates (June 14, June 21, June 28). Baby
Rhyme Time offers rhymes, finger plays, and other age-appropriate activities for parents
and caregivers.
7. Storytime Theater
Family programming offering songs, stories and a puppet show continued to be a patron
favorite and has “sold out” for all three shows in June. The room capacity for the
program is limited to 70 individuals. Families are presented with songs, a story and a
puppet show. This month, Children’s Services staff at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove
Lane presented, Triceratops Hop, Suzy’s Birthday Party, and Three Billy Goats Gruff.

8. StoryWalk
The Carlsbad City Library StoryWalk, which consists of a deconstructed book affixed to
signs and arranged so that participants can read the story while enjoying a walk,
continues through the summer at a total of four parks. The book on display this summer
is “Call Me Tree” by Maya Christina Gonzalez. The StoryWalk was on display at the
following parks in June:
• Holiday Park: June 13 through June 26
• Calavera Hills Community Center & Park: June 26 through July 10
9. Summer Stories
Summer Stories is taking the place of Early Learning Storytime at the Dove Library this
summer and is held every Tuesday beginning June 14 at 10:30 a.m. in the Wi-
Fi/Children’s Garden. For ages one to seven, this story time in the garden engages
children in books, songs, and rhymes.
10. Exploration HUB
The Exploration HUB received 127 visitors during June, and staff answered 461
informational questions which included helping patrons with software, hardware, and
general information about the HUB. This is a significant increase over last month as
patrons re-discover all the Exploration HUB has to offer.
11. Adult Literacy
27 learner/tutor pairs are now meeting in person and through a limited number of
virtual sessions. When Literacy Services fully reopened in April of 2022, the goal was to
have 30 tutoring pairs meeting by the end of the calendar year, which we are on track to
achieve. Literacy Services has also returned to the pre-pandemic schedule of two Tutor
Orientations and one Tutor Training per month.
Services:
12. Cool Zone
The Dove Library was designated a San Diego County Cool Zone on June 1, joining a
network of free, air-conditioned buildings across the county. The Cool Zone program
promotes conservation and energy efficiency by lowering individual usage and
protects seniors, persons with disabilities and those with health concerns from high
summer temperatures.
Community Connections:
13. Summer Camp Outreach
Principal Librarian for Partnerships and Community Outreach Laura Mendez partnered
with various summer camps in June to introduce Summer Reading Adventure to
campers. Staff reached 75 kids and their families at the Boys and Girls Club, 22 people at

the Scout House Pee-Wee Summer Camps, 103 people at the Carlsbad Educational
Foundation Summer Camp, and nine people at Pine Avenue Community Center. These
initial partnerships were a success, and the aim is to start incorporating Summer
Reading Adventure as part of the camp experience next year.
14. TGIF Concerts in the Parks
Library staff promoted library programs & services at TGIF Concerts in the Parks and
handed out branded library swag and Scholastic books for children. June TGIF library
outreach focused on the Summer Reading Adventure, while July and August events will
focus on other library programs and services.
Special Projects:
15. Carlsbad History Archives
Genealogy & Carlsbad History Division staff completed processing the addition to the
Shipley Family Papers manuscript collection. This new group of materials, donated by
the Walwick Family in 2021, consists of roughly 300 items and includes correspondence
and holiday cards, real estate records, tax documents, legal papers, and miscellaneous
ephemera. The addition spans the years 1884-1973 and belonged to one of Carlsbad’s
first families.
16. Teen Volunteers for Summer Reading
After a two-year pause, volunteer opportunities for teens was in demand. All available
volunteer shifts were claimed within the first day. Staff presented five volunteer
orientation sessions for the 141 teens. Training consisted of COVID-19 safety protocols,
volunteer duties, how to engage with young library readers, how to clock-in and clock-
out of the software, dress code and having fun.
At the Cole Library, teen volunteers worked 323 hours between June 13-30. Volunteers
assisted at library programs and took 182 reports from Summer Reading Adventure
participants about what they’ve been reading. Participants who reported got to select a
free book to keep! At the Dove Library, teen volunteers worked 229 hours in June.
Volunteers took 251 reports which means 251 books donated by the Friends of the
Library were given to readers participating in the Summer Reading Adventure.

Accomplishments:
17. Intern
San Jose State University Intern Sarah Wilson ended her time with the library in May.
She provided a presentation for library staff and a poster session at the American
Library Association Annual Conference in Washington D.C. Her two main learning
objectives included working with Principal Librarian for Partnerships and Community
Outreach Laura Mendez to build connections with schools and local organizations and
conducting a diversity audit of the children’s picture book collection at Cole Library.
18. CLA (California Library Association) Conference
Staff attended the CLA Conference virtually and in person held June 2-4 in Sacramento,
California.
• Children’s Librarian Angelica Mejia attended and presented at the CLA conference
for her participation in Developing Leaders in California Libraries.
• Senior Librarian Allyson Goodwin attended and presented at the conference as a

High School.
19. ALA (American Library Association) Conference
Staff attended the ALA Conference virtually and in person held June 24-28 in

20. Collections & Technical Services
Collections & Technical Services division staff coordinated the contracting challenges for
two new electronic resources:
July 27, 2022 ITEM 4 Page 6 of 8
• Kanopy is a streaming video service that provides classic cinema, indie films, and top
documentaries. Kanopy was previously part of the library’s collection. Kanopy has
now been acquired by OverDrive, our main eBook vendor. Kanopy now has a new
easier to use website and we expect that renewed access to this popular resource
will be appreciated by patrons.
• Hoopla is an online platform that includes eComics, streaming music, some video
streaming and other offerings. Hoopla will also be a welcome addition to the
library’s online collections.
These exciting newly acquired digital products will be implemented for public use
once technical setup is complete in the new fiscal year.
Patron Stories (heard around the library):
21. At the Grow Your Garden event
• A patron wanted to make up a succulent pot out of the clippings. She asked how
much she owed, and another patron piped up and said "It's free! All of this is free!
Can you believe it?"
• A teenage patron stopped by to ask about the event and was excited when staff
handed her a flyer and said they were happening throughout the summer. She said
"man, this is so cool." Staff responded, "Right? Tell your friends, the library has some
awesome stuff!" and she responded, "I don't want to tell them, I want to keep it a
secret so I can have it all to myself!" *Laughter* "Just kidding, I'll tell them, thanks!
