5. SUMMER READING ADVENTURE FINAL REPORT: Senior Librarians Ally Goodwin and Bill
Sannwald presented the 2022 Summer Reading Adventure Final Report including statistics,
successes, and thoughts for next year. Vice Chair DeForest asked about teen volunteer
statistics; Trustee Schatt asked about future sharing of information with participants; and
Trustee Moran asked about other departments' involvement with the program this year.
6. KANOPY: Lead Librarian Madelyn Horton and Librarian Emily Hardy presented an overview,
demonstration and instruction on the relaunched streaming eResource, Kanopy.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Director Smithson was not in attendance. Deputy Library Director Katie l')Jye updated the board
on a variety of topics: update on recruitment for the Training Coordinator position; elimination
of overdue fines will be implemented Sept 1, 2022; after a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19
pandemic, the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium hosted the annual State of the City event on Aug.
15; a successful TGIF Concerts in the Parks series ended on Aug. 19; the exhibit at the sculpture
garden near the Georgina Cole Library will be closing Aug. 26; a new exhibit at the William D.
Cannon Art Gallery titled "The Chair" begins Sept. 10; International Film series returns in
September on the first and third Fridays of each month; new streaming service Hoopla is now
live; update on City Council's approval of a new city hall and civic center and the implications for
the Georgina Cole Library; onsite security review has been completed; Exploration HUB
equipment upgrades; job readiness program Bendable; Staff Development day/week to take
place in the fall; Carlsbad Reads Together committee is meeting and planning for 2023; and the
boards & commissions appreciation event will take place on Oct. 25.
FOUNDATION REPORT:
Representative Schatt did not have a report.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson was not in attendance.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT:
Representative Sheffler was not in attendance.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT:
Board Liaison Mary Millet shared a workshop the society's president attended on volunteers; and
a webinar will be held on Sept. 13 titled "All that Glitters": A Collaborative Case Study of Gold,
Fraud, and Family Ties. This event is open to everyone ..
LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Trustee Schatt would like to see a future presentation on eResource, Hoopla.
