Monthly Library Report
July 2022
Highlights:
1. Summer Reading Adventure Update
The Summer Reading Adventure program will end Aug. 6. Teen volunteers returned to the
library to receive reading reports from participants after a two year hiatus due to COVID-19.
In the month of July, our volunteers listened to over 525 reports at all three library
locations.
2. Teen Talent Show
The Teen Talent Show returned to the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium on July 14. Teen
Librarian Ashleigh Hvinden hosted the event with 18 individual acts and one group act. 108
community members attended the event. Teen Ella Engelberg (original comedy act) was the
first-place winner, Sage Taylor (singer) won second place and Asher Devito (known as
Personified) won third place for his rap performance. The grand prize for this year's talent
show was a specialized experience in the Exploration HUB. The Exploration HUB is the
technology lab and makerspace located on the 2nd floor of the Carlsbad City Library on
Dove Lane. Library staff offer classes on topics like 3D design, Adobe Photoshop, Arduino
and Silhouette Cameo. Staff will work with the winner to create the lesson that best fits
them. In addition, the first place winner was awarded a karaoke machine, the second place
winner a Kindle Fire and the third place winner an underwater camera.
Programs:
3. Grow Your Garden
Librarian Bridget Lopez and Library Technician Danielle Fiscal-Rajsky hosted the Grow Your
Garden event on July 23. Approximately 55 people attended the event and took advantage

of the seed library, especially the Chioggia beets. This event included a crop swap, expertise
from educator and master gardener Jay Klopfenstein and Lee Taylor from the Carlsbad
Community Garden Cooperative, and a one-hour presentation by a farm to table
professional chef, Michelle Fisher.
4. Small Critters and Bugs
On July 19 the Georgina Cole Children’s Division presented a Bug Camp. Children learned
about the life cycles of different bugs and butterflies. Children took home a Painted Lady
caterpillar in a container provided with food to observe the process in person. The children
were challenged by the craft to create their own version of an insect which yielded some
really creative results.
5. Exploration HUB
During the month of July, the Exploration HUB offered 12 classes. Exploration HUB staff
created lesson plans to coincide with the Summer Reading Adventure’s theme, “Reading
Beyond the Beaten Path” which is camping and nature themed.
6. Intermediate Genealogy Class
“Transcription: Key to Clarity and Connection” presented by ReBecca Henry was held
Tuesday, July 12. ReBecca Henry shared her experience of getting to know her great
grandmother, who she never met, through transcribing her letters, as well as taking a look
at how transcription can make things clear. This program was offered virtually with an
attendance of 46.
7. DNA Interest Group
“The Priest and the Choir Girl Revisited: Searching for Family in an Endogamous Population”
presented by Kathleen Fernandes, Ph.D. This presentation chronicled the efforts to learn
about the family of Joao Inacio da Silva who was a foundling born in 1861 in the Azores, an
island group in the Atlantic Ocean west of Portugal. The geographic isolation of the islands
resulted in an endogamous population where relatives shared more DNA than expected,
reducing the applicability of standard methodologies, and calling for the exploration of
alternative analytic approaches. This program was offered on July 16, both in person at the

Cole Library and as a webinar. In person attendance was six and virtual attendance was 27
for a combined attendance of 33.
Community Connections:
8. Kiwanis Club of Lake San Marcos
On July 12, Senior Librarian Marsha Weeks presented an overview of the genealogy
resources and services available to the Kiwanis Club of Lake San Marcos. Topics included the
physical genealogy collection and related equipment located at the Georgina Cole Library,
online databases available 24/7, the formal partnership the library has with the North San
Diego County Genealogical Society, the Ask a Genealogist service and more. The one-hour
presentation was attended by 24 people.
9. Books To Go:
The book bike visited the Farmer’s Market, the Sea Wall Beach route, and a showing of the
movie “Encanto” at Flicks at the Fountain in July, promoting services to a total of over 700
people and giving away 305 books.
Services:
10. Harvest Unleashed
In July, the library launched a product called Harvest Unleashed that enhances searching in
the online catalog -- making it easier for both staff and patrons to find and explore all the
materials that the library has to offer. Highlights of the new product include:
• Results that include pseudonyms or given names. A search for “Nora Roberts” will now
show the results for her titles, as well as titles written under her pseudonym “J.D.
Robb”.
• Showing titles that are on order.

Special Projects:
11. Digital Asset Management System
Senior Business Systems Specialist Devin Castel, Senior Librarian Marsha Weeks, Production
Technician Bonnie Crane-Sullivan and Librarians Matt Ferrill and Jennifer Snapp-Cook have
been working on a citywide project to help select a Digital Asset Management System. The
system will be able to host Carlsbad historical photographs, oral histories, video, and other
digital assets owned and maintained by the Library & Cultural Arts Department as well as
assets maintained by other city departments.
Library Kudos:
"I had the most wonderful experience with one of the employees, her name is Esmie. I've taken
so many photos on the reservation with family I wanted to create more space on my phone, so
I went to the library, and she helped me transfer some of them over to a hard drive. She is so
kind, knowledgeable and I was so grateful because we have so much we need to get done
before we head up north tonight and this helped me so much. If you could pass that message
along I would so appreciate it.”
“I live in La Costa area of South Carlsbad, and I am going to tell my city council rep what a great
job you did.” (email from Kiwanis Club of Lake San Marcos presentation attendee)
“This is to express my thanks and appreciation for service I received at the Cole branch this
morning. Jan at the genealogy desk went out of his way to help me find ancestry information.
He was courteous and very helpful. Thanks Jan!”
“Library staff are life savers! Through curbside service they have helped me out numerous
times to check out materials and make my life better. They are always so helpful and patient
over the phone when I call to put many books on hold. Thank you!” - Bonnie S.
“Thank you for all your work in keeping our library current. Soooo many good things to say
about the services you provide. I love our library. Thank you again.”
“Thank you for adding Kanopy to our library services! Wow---that’s so great! I’m familiar with
Kanopy and ‘really’ like it. I just signed up and the process worked without a hitch. I’m so glad
that Carlsbad Library is there for us. You’re the best!”
Maile McKeon, Exploration HUB supervisor received an email from a patron after she attended
the backpack class. “Great class! Danielle is a really good instructor. My backpack came out
looking beautiful. Thank you.”
