Executive Summary Recreation Area Manager Margaret Hamer will present a report on the department’s recently completed and upcoming senior activities and programs, as well as other topics of interest. Exhibits 1.Department Report on Senior Activities and Programs 1 of 1 \` Carlsbad Senior Center REPORT October 6, 2022 GENERAL Goal 2: Support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan Age-Friendly Mobility •A special educational presentation to review mobility safety for all ages and the local state of emergency. Hosted by Circulate San Diego and the Carlsbad Police Department, road safety for walking, biking and driving was covered and the steps the city is taking to ensure safe streets for everyone. They also discussed the social, economic, health, and public safety benefits of a walkable and bikeable neighborhood. American Sign Language •This student led program moved to Saturday to accommodate the new school schedule. In these sessions, students share how to communicate frequently used phrases, fingerspelling and deaf culture basics for new and existing families and seniors experiencing hearing loss. The lead student instructor is trilingual, fluent in ASL, Spanish and English. Carlsbad Service Leaders (CSL) •Carlsbad Service Leaders are assisting with Teens Teach Tech and planning service projects. New projects include assistance with center holiday decorating and card making. Teens Teach Tech •Tech-savvy teens shifted from summer hours to Saturdays for this age-friendly intergenerational program to support seniors who need assistance with their technology. Seniors receive free tech appointments to answer all their phone, computer and tablet questions. Goals 1, 3 & 4 Highlights: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center, increase social inclusion, enhance connectivity and minimize isolation. Fun with Rock Painting •This popular program continues to expand to Alga Norte Aquatics Center and Pine Avenue Community as well as classes at the Carlsbad Senior Center. New designs have been added to include seasonal and holiday themed art. Scripps Birch Aquarium •Seniors went on an “under the sea” adventure to the Scripps Birch Aquarium located in La Jolla. They viewed stunning colorful marine life featured in more than 60 habitats and learned more about the ocean environment through various hands-on exhibits, with research on the climate, earth, and ocean science. Tai Chi for Fall Prevention hosted by San Diego County •Due to high demand and the popularity of this program, Tai Chi for Fall Prevention will offer a new session with two classes at Stagecoach Community Park. Goal 4: Social Inclusion Concert in the Courtyard •September featured a unique musical pairing of mandolin and bass as performed by Gunnar Biggs and Bill Bradbury. MandoBasso performance featured traditional tunes, classical music and jazz. 1 of 4 Creative Crafting •This new craft class has students turning everyday 'throw away' items into works of art they can be showcase. Students create various art pieces utilizing miscellaneous items found around the house, never looking at household items the same. In September students utilized old magazines to create artful cards using ‘Magazine Fun’. Free programs that offer inclusion and social interaction: •Many programs do not require registration but do have sign-in sheets for each activity. There was a total of 1,620 signatures in September. Billiards, Bingo, Canasta, Carlsbad Tech Users Group, Ceramics, Chess Club, Garden Club, Duplicate Bridge, Hawaiian Dance, Line Dancing, Needlecraft, the Art Group, Ping Pong, Posture Alignment, Sewing & Quilting Club, Stamp Collectors Club, Writer’s Block, Writing Our Lives Group and more! Nutrition Program •The nutrition team is preparing for the holidays with updated décor and future to return plated meals in the dining room by December. •Staff continue the Color Your World home meal delivery program, created by nutrition staff to provide coloring projects directly to homebound seniors. As art projects are completed, they are posted and shared in the center dining room. Concert in the Courtyard: Cheryl Silverstein, Monday, Oct. 17, 12:30 p.m., Courtyard, Free •Featuring Jazz and Pop Vocalist Cheryl Silverstein and keyboardist Tom Reich who will entertain on the courtyard with their spiritual and soulful music. Bates Nut Farm Excursion, Friday, Oct. 21, 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m., $25 •The shuttle will transport customers to the famous Bates Nut Farm for fun fall activities which include a hayride, educational talk, farm animals visit and picking pumpkins from the patch. Tai Chi for Health and Immunity Presentation, Friday, Oct. 21, 6 – 7 p.m., Free •Dr Paul Lam, a family physician, and tai chi practitioner and teacher for over 40 years, is a world leader in the field of tai chi for health improvement. He will present and will explain what tai chi is, share the health benefits, and discuss how tai chi relates to the immune system. He will also advise how to begin a tai chi program. Dr. Lam will lead local tai chi players in his unique form of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. He will teach a few tai chi movements and perform a brief tai chi demonstration and answer questions.
