Author Program The Carlsbad City Library hosted New York Times bestselling author and long-distance swimmer Lynne Cox on Aug. 6 to discuss her new book “Tales of Al: The Water Rescue Dog”. Lynne Cox is best known for her swim across the Bering Strait from the United States to the Soviet Union on Aug. 7, 1987. “Tales of Al” is a moving, inspiring story of Lynne's adventures on Italy's Lake Idroscalo, where she witnessed the rigorous training of spectacular rescue dogs at the famed Scuola Italiana Cani da Salvataggio (SICS). The 80 patrons in attendance enjoyed an hour-long discussion and Q&A. Patrons could purchase books provided by Adventures by the Book (53 copies were sold) and have them autographed by Lynne. In unison with the author program theme, 44 patrons attended a special Paws to Read event before the author talk on the same day. 2. Teen Art Show The first-time-ever teen art show was held in the Dove Library courtyard. Staff received 16 submissions from 13 teens. The art was framed and displayed in the courtyard for the community’s enjoyment. Six library staff members from various divisions evaluated the art and selected the seventh-grade winner, Mikaela Inolceda. The winning art piece is featured on the Dove Library teen bulletin board. 3. Bendable – job readiness resource Bendable is a new eResource that provides a learning marketplace for people of all ages to discover new knowledge and skills. This service offers a unique Job Readiness Room program where entry-level job seekers take online job-readiness courses to earn a micro- credential. Those who complete the training are guaranteed at least one job interview with a local employer in one of several fields the job seeker chooses. This is a pilot program between the City of Carlsbad’s Innovation & Economic Development Department, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, Bendable and the Carlsbad City Library. In August, two job Sept. 28, 2022 ITEM 1 Page 3 of 8 seekers completed the micro-credential program and 24 more are progressing through the program. 4. Ringing of the Peace Bells A Ringing of Peace Bells Ceremony was held at the Georgina Cole Library in partnership with Carlsbad Sister City Ambassadors to commemorate 77 years of peace since the American use of an atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. The event held Aug. 5 included a story time for children with books centered on peace and friendship with a Japanese-themed craft activity. Children had the opportunity to participate in a Zoom call with Carlsbad’s Sister City in Futtsu, Japan, to ring the bells of peace together. This program emphasized the library as a community connector on a global scale for all ages. Programs: 5. First Wednesday Book Club 23 patrons met on Aug. 3 to discuss “The Swimmers” by Julie Otsuka. Because attendance has been consistently high since resuming in-person meetings last March, it was discussed how we might change our format to better allow for meaningful engagement. Some ideas from patrons included adding more monthly book club meetings, breaking into smaller groups within our existing book club, and meeting for 90 minutes instead of an hour. 6. Grow Your Garden Staff hosted a Grow Your Garden event on Aug. 27 in the Ann Kulchin Courtyard at Dove Library. Approximately 45 people attended and visited the crop swap table. Community members contributed plumeria, bromeliad, and milkweed cuttings, pole bean seeds, Meyer lemons, zucchini, strawberry guavas, and rosemary. Many families with children and adults planted succulents to take home, and dozens of packets from our seed catalog were given away to eager gardeners. A highlight of the event was a one-hour talk by Patrice Smerdu, a daughter of a community garden honoree, about microgreens ventures and ways to incorporate microgreens into your garden. Sept. 28, 2022 ITEM 1 Page 4 of 8 7. Bilingual Services Virtual Read & Play Summer Club Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo facilitated the Read & Play Summer Club via Zoom on Aug. 4. The group read and discussed the last chapter of “Camp Time in California” by Mary Pope Osborne from the Magic Tree House Series. Participants played a word game. This was the last meeting of the summer, and the program will resume in June of 2023. Students were encouraged to sign up for the All-Star Readers Book Club which is a similar program offered during the school year. 8. Summer Reading Finale with Zany Zoe (All locations) Attendees enjoyed crafts, activities, frozen treats, and magic by performer Zany Zoe. A total of three in-person performances were presented as a grand finale to this year’s summer reading adventure. 9. Terrific Tuesday and Wacky Wednesday (Dove Library): Aimed at school-age children, the programs on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3 focused on Space including rocket design and building straw rockets. 75 attended the two programs. 10. STEM Builder’s Club (Dove Library) 50 school-aged children investigated building and architecture with LEGOs and K’nex on Aug. 25. 11. Genealogy & Carlsbad History with North San Diego County Genealogy Society - DNA Interest Group “Let’s Meet DNA Painter!” was presented by Sara Cochran on Aug. 20. In this class, patrons explored the tools at DNA Painter and how they can help people understand their genetic family history in a new visual representation. This program was offered in person at the Cole Library and as a webinar. In person attendance was seven and virtual attendance was 34 for a combined attendance of 41. Sept. 28, 2022 ITEM 1 Page 5 of 8 12. Summer Reading Adventure The libraries had great participation this year. There were over 2000 registrants, with 829 completing the program and 429 completing the optional challenge component. Over 22,000 activities were completed and over 26,000 badges were earned. More than 3000 rewards were given away and over 1000 free books to children who reported what they read to our teen volunteers. Speaking of which, our teen volunteers worked almost 1500 hours across all three library locations. 2019 registration was 4,147 with 1,908 completing the program. In 2022, there were 2,141 patrons registered and 829 that completed the program. 13. State Parks Passes State Parks passes continue to be popular and we currently have 94 holds on 12 passes. More passes have been requested from the State Library, but staff does not know how many will be received or when. 14. Career Online High School One community member completed the requirements and received a scholarship for Career Online High School. A second prospective student is in the process of completing the prerequisite requirements. Two students are progressing through the program, and both are more than 50% complete. Special Projects: 15. Archives Room On Aug. 23, Genealogy & Carlsbad History Division staff noticed that some historical Carlsbad items from the Archives Room had active mold growth after reporting higher levels of humidity in that room. COVID-19 standards for HVAC units have increased the level of outside air that is circulated into a building. The introduction of more outside air, the longer heatwave and higher humidity levels have negatively impacted the Archives Room and created a damp environment. Staff are working with the city’s Facilities Department for a solution. Community Connections: 16. TrueCare Carlsbad TrueCare Carlsbad continues to provide passive tabling at all three Carlsbad City Library locations. TrueCare visited each location once during the month of August, providing information about free and affordable services to 25 individuals; services included dental care, health insurance, Cal-fresh access, transportation assistance and women’s health. 17. Carlsbad by the Sea Librarians Emily Hardy and Sharon Talmadge, and Circulation Supervisor Nancy Ludwig provided a Libby workshop to Carlsbad by the Sea residents on Aug. 30. Staff offered a Libby Basics PowerPoint and hands-on help to 15 attendees, six of whom were able to sign up for a new library card. Sept. 28, 2022 ITEM 1 Page 6 of 8 18. TGIF Library Outreach: Library staff hosted outreach tables at each TGIF Concerts in the Parks event this summer from June 24 – Aug. 19 and interacted with a total of 1,029 concert attendees. Staff gave away freebies for adults and children and promoted the Summer Reading Adventure program, as well as Exploration HUB classes, volunteer opportunities, information about our support organizations and Career Online High School. 19. Jefferson Elementary Outreach: Lead Librarian Lynn Johnson, Librarian Missy Shaw, and Bilingual Library Tech Linsey Brizuela participated in Jefferson Elementary School’s back-to-school event to promote library services to 379 attendees. 20. It’s a great option for us library patrons and I’m happy to have it back. • Staff received fan art from a 2-year-old named Jayne (and her mom). Her tweens said this program was “not boring at all, mom, which is high praise from tweens”. • A literacy staff member was telling a patron how the literacy program inspires our learners to write. The patron said, “Just coming into the library is an inspiration!” • A literacy tutor was enjoying the staff’s colorful flair pins that are on staff lanyards and said, “It must be nice to work in a place where you can have fun and make a difference.” (Why, yes, it is!) Other 21. Summit #2 Children’s Services staff from all three library locations participated in Summit #2 – Storytime Standards; staff looked at what best practices are and how to incorporate them into the library’s vision and mission. Staff gave two presentations; one on how to incorporate American Sign Language into our storytimes and the other on how to do a bilingual storytime when you aren’t bilingual.
