The library welcomed 1,059 new library card holders in September. This month is sponsored by the American Library Association. 2.Voices of Inspiration Authors Visit The “Voices of Inspiration” event featured local author Jesse Leon, “I’m Not Broken: A Memoir” and Shugri Said Salh, “The Last Nomad: Coming of Age in the Somali Desert.” Authors shared personal stories of resilience and survival to 48 community members on Sept. 17 in the Schulman Auditorium. The library hosted two local resource tables during the event, one promoting the Library Learning Center’s literacy services and Career Online High school, and the other promoting the organization Breaking Down Barriers, whose mission is to extend educational programs and services to the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities. 3.Helping Other City Departments The Exploration HUB continues to be a creative space for community connections. In September, three internal city connections were made with city partners. Librarian Maile McKeon and HUB staff trained their colleagues on digitizing slides to preserve photos from past gallery exhibits. Public Works, Children’s Services and Library Learning Center staff learned to use the Silhouette Cameo cutter and software for custom name plates and library decorations during staff-only instruction sessions. Page 2 of 9 Oct. 26, 2022 ITEM 1 4. AmeriCorps Carlsbad City Library has been awarded two half-time (900 hours/year) AmeriCorps members through a partnership with California Library Literacy Services, Pacific Library Partnership and Literacyworks. The members will contribute to pandemic recovery through tutoring, recruiting and other activities to support the literacy program at the Library Learning Center over a year-long service period. The AmeriCorps members are expected to begin in November. Programs: 5. Talk Like a Pirate Day Cole Library hosted a “Talk Like a Pirate Day” program on Sept. 20. Attendees were given pirate names, made parrot crafts, and played a “walk the plank” game. Librarians Melinda Pitula and Missy Shaw were captains of the ship. 6. Johnny Appleseed Day Cole Library hosted a program with an apple theme. Attendees bobbed for apples (in a COVID-safe way), made apple window crafts, and enjoyed no-bake apple pie and apples. The program took place on Sept.27. 7. Toddler Time Library Assistants Sheryl Goto and Kylee Seal presented Toddler Time at the Dove Library location to a record-breaking crowd. At one particular session of this weekly program, there were 129 participants who learned about the Letter F and Firefighters Page 3 of 9 Oct. 26, 2022 ITEM 1 8. Grow Your Garden A successful crop swap at the last Grow Your Garden series event of the year had 25 people in attendance. Some brought cuttings, individually wrapped homemade cookies, and others took cuttings home or planted little potted succulent gardens for tables or windowsills. Many visited the Carlsbad Community Garden’s tables and enjoyed homegrown strawberry and lemon guavas. The Master Gardener class on Integrated Pest Management was attended by 17 people. 9. Focus On Library Technician Jan Mongoven presented a Focus On class that celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by helping people get started with tracing their Mexican roots. Jan covered how to use genealogy records available in the Ancestry Library Edition database and FamilySearch.org website. This hands-on computer class was offered at the Library Learning Center and was attended by two people. 10. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten There are a total of 486 readers enrolled with a total of 22,878 books read. Four readers have completed the program, reading 1,000 books each. Services: 11. State Funded Workforce Databases The California State Library renewed subscriptions for databases supporting workforce development. Carlsbad City Library will continue to offer Coursera, Get Set Up and Learning Express through September 2024, and Skillshare through September 2023; these databases are funded through the American Rescue Plan and are provided by the State Library at no cost to the City of Carlsbad. 12. HUB Upgrades Audio-visual upgrades to the Exploration HUB in early September added an assisted listening system for accessibility, an 85” 4K display monitor for improved viewing, a screen- sharing app for class collaboration, and a digital media presentation system to tie the features together seamlessly. Page 4 of 9 Oct. 26, 2022 ITEM 1 13.State Parks Passes Patron checkouts of state park passes remain steady, but new requests have slowed down 53% since last month for a total of 12 requests in September vs. 25-28 requests per month from May-August 2022. The parks passes still have 79 holds on 12 copies; the State Library has promised additional passes in the coming months. Once additional passes are delivered, Carlsbad City Library will engage in additional marketing to promote the State Park Pass program. Passes are offered in partnership with the California State Library and California State Parks. Special Projects: 14.Children’s Art An art exhibit was installed in the Children’s Library at Cole. Attendees learned about the composition of comic art. They created comics first as a group and then on their own at the Sept. 6, Tuesday Afternoon Adventure program. The artwork was framed and displayed for the community to enjoy. One patron noted that the artwork brings “color and vibrancy” to the space. 15.Hispanic Heritage Display An art installation of a Catrina collection to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Dia de los Muertos was installed at all three library locations. The Catrinas are from a private collection owned by Mrs. Lorenzo (mother of Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo at the Library Learning Center). The installation will be available for patrons to enjoy through November. Page 5 of 9 Oct. 26, 2022 ITEM 1 16.Oversize Interfiling Project Starting last Fall, Collections & Technical Services embarked on a large project to revamp the locations of the adult nonfiction collections, starting on the second floor at Dove Library. Planning took several months. o The first phase was to weed, shift and reorganize the Reference, Spanish, Test Book and Biography Collections. o Phase two was to reorganize the shelving at Dove Library in order to interfile most of the Oversize collection into the Adult Nonfiction with the ultimate goal of creating a single location for staff and patrons to locate adult nonfiction materials. The Oversize Collection especially, tended to be browsed less frequently. This meant adjusting more than 1,500 shelves, moving over 40,000 books onto carts and back off several times and changing online coding for over 4,000 items. The interfiling project was completed in February of 2022. Staff now have some statistics to begin to reflect the results of the changes that were made: o Out of the 2,755 books that ended up moving from oversize into nonfiction, 1,272 of those individual items have been checked out since the move into nonfiction. Some items as many as 12 times. o 38% of all oversize items that circulated after the move to nonfiction had not circulated in at least two years. In some cases, these titles had almost no checkouts since they moved from our new-items shelving onto our oversized-items shelving. This clearly reflects patrons are finding materials more easily in the new locations. 17.Carlsbad Reads Together Children’s Librarian Missy Shaw and Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo worked with Principal Librarian Laura Mendez to put together a community survey for Carlsbad Reads Together 2023. The survey consisted of twelve titles for voting. The survey will be open from Sept. 19 through Oct. 4. Results will be used to help the planning committee determine which authors to reach out to for speaking rates and availability. Accomplishments: 18.Published Article Principal Librarian Laura Mendez published an article on ILoveLibraries.org, a website sponsored by the American Library Association. The article was released during Banned Books Week and provides an overview of weeding practices in libraries; weeding is the term libraries use to describe removal of items from the library collection. Page 6 of 9 Oct. 26, 2022 ITEM 1 Community Connections: 19.Outreach Librarians Hannah Lockhart and Missy Shaw conducted an outreach visit and storytime at Bitchin’ Sauce headquarters for the Bitchin’ Kids daycare program (yes, that’s the actual name). The visit took place Sept. 8 and represents an effort to connect with local businesses. School is in session. Missy Shaw attended Jefferson Elementary’s Back to School night and reached approximately 200 individuals on Sept. 8. Approximately 200 individuals were reached during an outreach event at the Sept. 10 Stagecoach Park Family Film night. 20.Book Donations The Library Learning Center facilitated the donation of over 1,000 Scholastic books to organizations serving children in and around the Carlsbad community. The books were given to the Library Learning Center through a San Diego Council on Literacy grant-funded project. Recipients included local preschools, the Agua Hedionda Discovery Center library collection, Boys & Girls Club, and the UNITE North County community network. Patron Stories (heard around the library): Dear Carlsbad Library, I’m emailing you to tell you…… we have a reader! My one-year-old daughter picks up books and “reads”. She loves it! She loves the snuggles, or to “read” on her own. She picks up books more often than toys. She loves to turn the pages and babble as she does so. Money has been tight in our family, so we couldn’t afford to build our own library. But with your books, we have had a variety of books available to our baby since she was 3 months old! Thank you . We Your beautiful library. A staff member was out walking at home this weekend and heard a person shout from across the street, "I know you from the Georgina Cole Library!" The woman praised everyone for helping her in the lab with her home loan application: uploading PDFs, making copies and cheering her on during setbacks. She said she thinks of us often because she's living in the house she bought as a result of that home loan! “Yesterday, I spent about an hour doing research in your collection of old newspapers on the 2nd floor. The librarian there, Barbara, was wonderful to me and gave me a lot of help. I just wanted to thank her for that and let you know what a great experience it was.” Page 7 of 9 Oct. 26, 2022 ITEM 1 “To the Carlsbad Genealogy Team, Thank you so much for the amazing resources that are free to the public. Jan & his team did such a fantastic job and went beyond my expectations. They have sparked an interest for me to learn more about the resources and about my family. I can’t thank you enough.” A regular patron of ours came up to the Information desk to say that she'd had a great experience with Bendable. She booked one of our study rooms and was able to have what she described a very helpful conversation with a live person through Cell-Ed. She was very happy with the service. Patrons took to Facebook to share their feedback about the library’s commitment to remove overdue fines for library materials. Some highlights are shared below: “Excited that Carlsbad is finally following this equitable policy that many libraries have implemented! This is a great move in the right direction!” “This is awesome! Fines actually deter people from returning items. All the cool libraries are going fine-free!” “Love it! Great decision!” Page 8 of 9 EXHIBIT 2 Oct. 26, 2022 ITEM 1 LIBRARY MONTHLY STATISTICS September 2022 September 2019 (Pre-COVID-19) September 2022 Total Library Hours Open 792 621 Total Visitors On-site (2022 includes curbside) 57,696 35,443 Library Services Circulation of Library Materials 90,632 76,079 eAudiobook/eBook/eMagazine Downloads Audio/Video Streaming* *Available offerings have adjusted 2022: Kanopy relaunched Aug. 1; Hoopla launched Aug. 17 13,158 1,285 16,773 1,033 Circulation Total 105,435 93,885 Reference Questions 15,773 11,078 Technology eResource Use Web Sessions In-House Computer Use 6,648 41,206 7,497 7,103 39,197 2,481 Programs, Facility Usage Number of Programs Presented (On-site, Off-site, 2022 includes virtual) Programs Attendance 216 6,044 82 3,391 Number of Community Rentals Community Rentals Attendance 67 3,750 50 1,897 Page 9 of 9 (carlsbad City Library mt 0000 VwW ~ [E 0 r) □ ~i oOo e3
