Subject: Department Report on Senior Activities and Programs
Recommended Action
Receive a report on recently completed and upcoming Adults 50+ activities and programs, as
well as other topics of interest.
Executive Summary
Recreation Supervisor Eric Biggin will present a report on the department’s recently completed
and upcoming senior activities and programs, as well as other topics of interest.

GENERAL
Goal 2: Support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
Jefferson Elementary School Game Day
•Jefferson Elementary School fifth graders visited the Carlsbad Senior Center dining room before
lunch service to play boards games with seniors. This intergenerational mix enjoyed the experience
so much that they are now planning to visit monthly. December will bring a holiday visit in
December with caroling and card making.
Teens Teach Tech
•Teens teach tech continues monthly hosted by students enrolled in the Carlsbad Service Leader
program. As one on one sessions are held, students are collecting the top questions asked by
seniors and creating a tech guide that will be provided to seniors after completing their tech
session. This will provide them a guide to reference once returning home and back into the tech
alone world.
Goals 1, 3 & 4 Highlights: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center, increase social inclusion, enhance
connectivity and minimize isolation.
Bates Nut Farm Excursion
•In October center staff led an adventure to the famous Bates Nut Farm for fun fall activities such as a
hayride, farm animals visits, pumpkin patch picking and ending with an educational talk on
agriculture and nuts. The trip was enjoyed by all that attended.
Private Gallery Tour and Tasting
•In December the Front Porch Gallery hosted a private tour led by the director highlighting their new
exhibit, Creating Meaning, followed by modern Italian cuisine tastings at 264 Fresco. This excursion
was an opportunity to explore fine art and culinary cuisine in the Carlsbad Village.
Tai Chi for Fall Prevention hosted by San Diego County
•Tai Chi for Fall Prevention is waitlisted at the Stagecoach Community Center with two classes
hosting approximately 70 seniors. This county funded program will end in January 2023.
Goal 4: Social Inclusion
Concert in the Courtyard
•October featured Jazz and Pop Vocalist Cheryl Silverstein and keyboardist Tom Reich, entertaining
senior music enthusiasts with their soulful music and positive vibes.
•November concert paired with a craft fair featuring senior center art and craft sales starting at 11:30
a.m. with music at 12:30 p.m. This concert featured The Vulcan Mountain Boys who rocked the
courtyard with hard-driving high energy authentic bluegrass music featuring originals, classic and
contemporary bluegrass, and rockabilly. Their performance was featured on social media and
highlighted in the city manager’s update.
Nutrition Program
•The nutrition team is hosting weekly holiday performances paired with community donations and
gift goodies for both home meal delivery and dining room customers.
•Staff are planning a “New Year” celebration on Monday, January 9, 2023 featuring a festive meal
while bringing back plate service to the dining room.

Health and Wellness Highlights
•1,386 visits to the Fitness Room
•New therapy program introduced bringing Therapeutic Balance & Mobility and Therapeutic Pilates
to the Carlsbad Senior Center. Physical therapist has over 15 years’ experience in Physical Therapy
and Aquatic Therapy and is a certified Pilates Instructor.
Holiday Events
Hula Holiday Program, Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1–2 p.m.
•The students of Hālau Hula ʻO Pualani present their 19th annual Holiday Hoʻike (recital) to share the
warmth of the Islands. They encourage the audience to wear a lei, bring their aloha spirit and enjoy
the story-telling dances of Hawaii, performed in beautiful costumes.
Seaside Singers Holiday Performance, Wed., Dec. 14 & Thur. Dec. 15, 1:30–2:30 p.m.
•Seaside Singers return as they perform their first concert since Christmas 2019! Welcome our new
Director Mark Phelps, our concert pianist Violeta Petrova and 35-member choir, to lift and warm your
hearts with a large variety of Christmas music, the old, some new, popular standards, and a happy
holiday spirit in all of us, to all of you.
Holiday Children’s Concerts, hosted by piano teacher Kia Portafekas
•Audrey Zhou | Wednesday, Dec. 28, 11–11:45 a.m.
Audrey performs all types of music such as rock, classical, pop and country. She plays classical and
electric guitar and is the lead guitarist in a youth rock band “Obsidian”. She has also been writing
songs for 1 year and has completed 5 songs so far.
•Jay & Kalli | Thursday, Dec. 29, 11–11:45 a.m.
Kalli enjoys playing classical pieces and musicals such as Bach, Beethoven, Nutcracker, and Lion
King. Jay enjoys playing fun, challenging piano pieces of variant styles such as movie themes,
classical and jazz.
New Year Celebration, Monday, Jan. 9, 12 p.m.
•A special lunch will be presented to celebrate the new year and return to plated service.

•Home meal counts include the county’s expanded senior nutrition program service (ESNP).
•Transportation Monday – Friday to the Carlsbad Senior Center with shopping options after lunch on
the first and third Wednesday of each month.
