Organization Changes/Challenges/Circumstances:
What special circumstances, challenges or changes have caused your organization to focus on management and/or
organizational issues at this time?
The major change in our organization is a shifting and growing audience. The Museum opened in 1998 for
members of the music trade association. Two years later the MoMM opened to the public. Thus, the original
intended audience of industry members transformed into a broad and diversified public. And yet, while the
Museum’s audience changed from the original intent, its exhibitions did not. In 2008, grant funding enabled
us to begin to address this misalignment. The Museum adjusted the messaging and added interactive
components. The retrofit of 2008 was helpful, but it did not solve long term issues such as antiquated
technology, and a changing environment where diversity and inclusivity are paramount. It became clear that
a major renovation was the next step for the Museum to ensure a vibrant future.
Completing that renovation during the pandemic, and now testing the renovated Museum, we are in a
tweaking phase in this one area. Our second Sit & Play area currently features three unique instruments: a
tongue drum, a hammered dulcimer, and a Harpejji. All are intriguing, but only the first is widely
approachable. The latter two can be intimidating, in turn discouraging our visitors from exploring the rich
experience of music making. By redesigning the Sit & Play area around accessible and intuitive instruments
that are selected to sound good when played together, we can provide a clear path to making music, both
individually and collectively.
Organization Capacity:
How will this project improve your organization's capacity to meet its goals and advance its mission?
Our mission is to open doors onto a world of music making that is far broader, and diverse than visitors ever
imagined. The renovation was used to help fund a full-scale, $1M renovation of the Museum’s permanent
exhibition galleries-a truly transformative project for the Museum, and Carlsbad. The renovated Museum now
includes the following components:
New Content Organization
Revised text, livelier graphics, and hands-on tactile experiences now deliver the story of the music products
industry in an engaging and exciting way for the visitor.

Interactive Area upgrade is now one corner of the gallery is designed specifically for children/youngest
guests. This includes age-appropriate instruments and comfortable youth seating and flooring.
This project helps us improve our organization's capacity to meet our goals and advance its mission by
offering a clear path to making music, both individually and collectively through more accessible and intuitive
instruments for our visitors in this area that needs redesign post renovation.
