FIRE SUPPRESSION LANDSCAPE GUIDELINES
For Undisturbed and Revegetated Native Plant Communities
BACKGROUND
Aviara's Master Pla!l and Coastal Permit provide for the creation of tire suppression
zones wherever native chaparral and coastal sage type pl~nl communities are located
adjacent ro dovelopment sites. This includes areas within the deed res1ric:ted oprm
spaces ~s well as reve!Jelated native open space areas. While providing lire
suppression measures tha.t meet the, approval ol the local !Ira agencies, Aviara also is
striving to main1ain the vlsuar and biological integrity of native plant communities.
These landscape guldelinHs are being provided with lhe intent of allowing both criteria
to be met to the satislac1io11 of local and coastal S!af1.
It should be no1ed lhat Aviara's complete lire suppression plan contains guidelines
and standards for building construction containing setbacks, rnaterlat and other
regu1a11ons, as woll as domestic and ornamen,al landscape design and maintenance
cr!leria. These important ;:1,spects of the ove,all fire suppression plan are not a part of
this document.
The following fire suppre:;sion landscape guidelines are for use in situations where
deed restricted coastal rcsourco areas :md revegetatcd native plan! communities
require fire suppression landscape trea.tmcmts. These gulCle!lnes are In conformance
wit~ t~e general Intent 9f tho Aviara Master Plan, City of Carlsbad Landscape
Guidelines and cond111ons of the California Coastal Permll.
LANDSCAPE ZONES
Fire control landscaping is divided into 3 Zones:
Zone 1, Domsst1c landscape,
Zone 2, Fire retardant and low lue! landscape,
Zone 3, Modified n~1ti110 landscape.
T~e brush manar, ement p1'ogram maintains effective fuAI control nnd visual compatibly
w1th tho nal!vo aroas. Low to moderate mnlnton<1nco will bn rcquir~d in 1hcsc mens.
Please refer lo the Exhibits A & Bon pages 2 A. 3 tor o '.'10>ual summation of the Zones
Moving away from structums located within a particular development site, Zones 1, 2,
and 3 are progressively further from the structure. The boundary between Zones 1
and 2 is locateCI at the d011e!opmsnt pad Adge and lhe !op or 100 ot Hin adpccnt slopo.
Each zone should be approximately 20 teet In width with Zone 2 lccat60 on th~ portion
of the slope closest to !ht~ devefoprne111 and Zone 3 lmmecflately adjacent, between
