APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes of the Library Board of Trustees regular meeting held Oct. 26, 2022.
Motion by Trustee Schatt, seconded by Trustee McBride, to approve the minutes as presented.
Motion carried unanimously, 4/0/1 (Sheffler -Absent}
PUBLIC COMMENT: None.
DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
1. MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: The board received and discussed the monthly library report
for October 2022. Chair DeForest and Vice Chair Schatt enquired about desktop computer
usage and streaming trends. Vice Chair Schatt suggested comparing statistics based on the
hours and days the library is currently open.
2. HOOPLA: Librarians Ashleigh Hvinden and Heidi Wyner presented an overview on Hoopla, a
new streaming eResource for Carlsbad City Library card holders.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Director Smithson updated the board on a variety of topics: New Training Coordinator Xochitl
Andrade will be introduced at an upcoming board meeting, technology librarian recruitment;
libraries closures for Christmas and New Year's holidays; ceremony on Dec. 12 in honor of the
Ann Kulchin Courtyard naming; board and commissions summaries included in the first of the
month notification are changing to an action agenda; update on Link+ book sharing with a launch
date for spring of 2023; increasing library operating hours in 2023; and the Registrar of Voters
reported Carlsbad City Libraries were the top ballot collectors after the ROV.

FOUNDATION REPORT:
Representative McBride shared the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation is meeting in a hybrid
format; and the foundation's total assets are $4,375,000, The foundation is looking for new board
members.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson reported the Friends of the Carlsbad Library
donated $5,000.00 in honor of Pat and Jim Hansen, longtime library and City of Carlsbad
volunteers and supporters. The donation was presented at the Carlsbad City Council meeting on
Dec. 6, 2022.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT:
Representative Sheffler was not in attendance.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT:
Board Liaison Mary Millet reported the society elected a new President, Vicki May; the National
Genealogical Society annual meeting discussed accelerating focus on diversity, equity and
inclusion and the NSDCGS supported this policy by inviting Cherokee native Nicka Sewall Smith
to the Fall seminar; the NSDCGS newsletter has been submitted into the national society's
newsletter competition; 2023 marks fifty years of the NSDCGS offering genealogical programs
and forty six years partnering with the Carlsbad City Library.

None.
