Absent: Trustee McBride. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Library Board of Trustees regular meeting held Jan. 25, 2023. Trustee Moran identified the misspelling of the word community on page two. Motion by Trustee Sheffler, seconded by Trustee Moran, to approve the minutes as amended with the correction of the misspelling of the word community on page two. Motion carried, 4/0/1 (McBride – Absent). PUBLIC COMMENT: None. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS: 1. MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: Receive the Narrative Report and Statistical Report for January 2023. (Staff contacts: Sheila Crosby and Katie Nye, Library & Cultural Arts) Recommendation: Receive the reports. Chair DeForest introduced the reports that were included in the agenda packet and asked for any questions or comments from the trustees. Chair DeForest commented on the growth in streaming services. The Commission received the reports. 2. CARLSBAD CITY LIBRARY CHILDREN’S SERVICES DIVISION OVERVIEW: Receive an overview from staff on current and future services provided by the Children’s Services division. (Staff contacts: Allyson Goodwin and Bill Sannwald, Library & Cultural Arts) Recommendation: Receive the report. LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Minutes Feb. 22, 2023 Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 2 Director Smithson introduced the report and Senior Librarians Allyson Goodwin, and Bill Sannwald provided a PowerPoint presentation to the board on current and future services provided by the Children’s Services division (on file in the Office of the City Clerk). The Commission received the report. DIRECTOR’S REPORT: Director Suzanne Smithson made the following announcements: • The 2023 Carlsbad Reads Together book selections are as follows: adult selection - “The Line Becomes a River” by Francisco Cantú, teen selection - “Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story” by Lilliam Rivera, and children's selection - “Bright Star” by Yuyi Morales • There will be a Fix-It Clinic on Feb. 25 at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane • In honor of Black History Month, a book discussion will be held virtually on Feb. 28 for Octavia E. Butler's graphic novel "Kindred" • Museum Month will end at the end of February Additionally, Director Smithson provided an update on Link+, the budget process, and department recruitments. FOUNDATION REPORT: None. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson announced that she did not have a report due to the Friends of the Library not meeting since the last Library Board of Trustees meeting. GROWTH MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT: Representative Sheffler updated the board on the committee’s work. NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Mary Millet reported that the society is partnering with the Georgina Cole Library to present a memoir writing class; new board positions have been filled; and the society sells books on their website to encourage genealogical interest and research. LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: None. ADJOURNMENT: Chair DeForest adjourned the meeting at 4:33 p.m. ______________________________ Jennifer Davidson Administrative Secretary
