CALL TO ORDER: 4:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Trustees DeForest, Larson, Schatt and Sheffler (McBride -Absent)

Motion by Trustee Larson, seconded by Trustee Schatt, to approve the minutes as presented.
Motion carried, 4/0/1/0 (McBride -Absent).
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None.
DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
1. MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: The board received and discussed the monthly library report
for February 2022.
2. LIBRARY SERVICES DURING COVID-19: The board received an update from Deputy Library
Directors Sheila Crosby and Katie Nye on library services during COVID-19. This included:
current guidelines and status of services; operating hours not yet returning to pre-pandemic
hours due to staffing requirements; interfiling of oversized books project at the Carlsbad
City Library on Dove Lane. Trustees Schatt and Larson inquired about statistics relating to
Sunday hours; and the trustees had comments and questions relating to the interfiling
project. This will be the final COVID-19 report as an agenda item.
3. eRESOURCES OVERVIEW: Lead Librarian Jacqui Petri and Technology Librarian Joe Burch
presented an overview on eResources including navigating the webpage; maximizing access
to eResources; catalog growth; online learning needs; and new eResources and support.
4. LIBRARY QUARTERLY TECHNOLOGY REPORT: Senior Business Systems Specialist Devih
Castel presented the Library Quarterly Technology Report including an overview of in-house
computer, wireless and website sessions, Parks & Recreation computer lab integration; and
automated materials handling system upgrade.

5. CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER 2022: Lead Librarian Darin Williamson presented an overview
of Carlsbad Reads Together 2022 including author discussions and complimentary programs
around the selected book titles. This year's main selected title is "The Personal Librarian11 by
Marie Benedict and Victoria Ch ristopher Murray. Trwstee Larson asked how book titles are
selected and how participation is measured.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Smithson updated the board on a variety of topics: status of
recruitments1 including new Programs & Venues Coordinator Tom Johnston within Cultural
Arts; Public Library Association Conference; in person programming; budget update; new phone
system launched in February; upgrade to fire systems at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane;
upgrading audio visual systems for the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium and William D. Cannon
Art Gallery.
FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative Schatt shared with the board that Carlsbad Library &
Arts Foundation funds are doing well. The foundation approved a request from Library &
Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Sm ithson for support in the upcoming year.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne Smithson reported
that the Friend's bookstore at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane re-opened on Feb. 14 and
at the Georgina Cole Library on Feb. 15. The Friends of the Carlsbad Library are looking for
volunteers including a new treasurer, and material donations are again being accepted.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Mary Millet
reported on a variety of topics: moving towards hybrid meetings; a successfwl Salt Lake City
genealogy trip; the 2022 Spring Seminar will be held April 30 and the topic w ill be "Black Sheep:
t he Criminals, t he Rebels, & the Non-Conformists in Our Families" featuring case studies
presented by society members
LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: None.
