Highlights:
1.Winter Reading Challenge - “All the Feels”
Carlsbad City Library hosted the annual all-ages Winter Reading Challenge through
Beanstack from Jan. 1 – 31. This year’s community reading goal was 115,382 minutes,
which reflects one minute read for each resident of Carlsbad. Readers surpassed the
goal for a total of 147,204 minutes read. Individuals were challenged to read 240
minutes. A stress ball reward was available for challenge completions. As a new
promotional effort this year, Principal Librarian Laura Mendez partnered with the city’s
Communications team to send four standalone eNewsletters focused on the Winter
Reading Challenge. The eNewsletters reached 15,464 subscribers from late December
through the end of the challenge, with a 51 % average open rate.
Below are some highlights from this year’s challenge compared with data from 2022:

2.Author Visit - Beth Thorp
Author and local resident Beth Thorp, spoke at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium on
Jan. 21 to 39 community members. In her book “ANEW Creation: Finding Meaning in the
Midst of Tragedy”, Beth shares the story of her baseball-loving teenage son’s fight with
a mysterious and debilitating illness for five years before he died at the age of 18.
Through the riveting and heart-wrenching experience, Beth and her husband Brad found
hope and started the Mitchell Thorp Foundation, which helps support and raise funds
for children with life-threatening illnesses, diseases, and disorders. After the discussion,
Thorp sold and signed copies of her book, with all proceeds going directly to the
Mitchell Thorp Foundation.

Programs:
3.English as a Second Language Classes
MiraCosta College is once again offering two ESL classes at the Library Learning Center:
Conversation for Intermediate Students and Reading and Writing for Intermediate
Students. The Conversation class started Jan. 23 with nine students, and the Reading
and Writing class started Jan. 24 with six students. The classes are open enrollment, so
students may enroll throughout the duration of the classes. The launch of these classes
marks the restoration of the partnership between the Library and MiraCosta which had
been on hiatus because of the pandemic.
4.Art of Jackson Pollock
The Georgina Cole Library Children’s Services Division staff hosted two programs
focusing on the art of Jackson Pollock. Tween Scene and Tuesday Afternoon Adventure
participants learned about “splatter art” and created their own masterpieces. Program
attendees were asked if they would like to donate their art for a display in the Children’s
Area, slated to be installed in early February.
5.Tinker Tuesday’s Community Collection
Library Assistant Brandon Tiongison and Library Technician Mina Jain facilitated a
STEAM program at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, incorporating circuitry and
robot crafts in partnership with Crow Force Robotics, a robotics team from Sage Creek
Middle School. This partnership was a result of the efforts of Principal Librarian Laura
Mendez and Librarian Ashleigh Hvinden.

Services:
6.Seed Libraries
Seeds are available for patrons to select and take home from the public service desks at
all library locations. In the month of January, 920 seed packets were distributed:
•Dove Library: 271
•Cole Library: 621
•Library Learning Center: 28
The popularity is attributed to seasonality, beneficial rains, and advertising through local
schools, the Carlsbad Farmer’s Market and eNewsletters.
7.State Parks Passes
The library received additional passes from the State Library and is now circulating 65
Parks Passes. 84 passes are currently being processed by the library’s Cataloging &
Technical Services Division for a total of 149 passes to be available soon. Principal
Librarian Laura Mendez partnered with the city’s Communications department to
deploy a press release and targeted eNewsletter to library subscribers and included a
message about the State Parks Passes in the Jan. 19 City Manager’s Update. There are
currently 73 holds on the 65 available passes.
Accomplishments:
8.LibLearnX Conference
Children’s Librarian Angelica Mejia attended the library conference LibLearnX that was
held on Jan. 27-30 in New Orleans. Angelica attended the annual American Library
Association’s (ALA) Youth Media Awards and represented the Carlsbad City Library as
one of the members of the Pura Belpré Awards Committee. The committee annually
gives an award to a Latinx writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and
celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for

Project Literacy broadcast in early December. On Jan. 20, Channel 10 presented a longer

our literacy program. In addition, the complete program presents important data on the

services at a local homeless shelter on Jan. 14.
11.Southern Caregiver Resource Center (SCRC)

County resident who is caring for an adult with a chronic and disabling condition in need
of assistance. SCRC began tabling at all three library locations on a rotating basis in
January and will be hosting outreach tables twice monthly through June 2023.
