Receive the Narrative Report and Statistical Report for May 2023.
Executive Summary/Discussion
The board will review the library’s monthly narrative and statistical reports for May 2023. These
reports provide a summary of work completed across all Carlsbad City Library divisions and
locations as well as data and information about the services and programs provided for the
community.

May 2023
Highlights:
1. Start Your Business in Carlsbad
Partnering with MiraCosta College and the City’s Small Business Development Center,
Adult & Teen Services hosted two events at the Georgina Cole Library that focused on
starting a business in Carlsbad.
• May 18: Instructor Irma Ramos used the Lean Canvas and value proposition
model to guide 21 attendees on developing a proof of concept, confirming
viability, and developing a systematic approach to success for their business.
• May 25: An informative session titled “What it Takes to Succeed, Financing,
Taxes & Business Entities” had 26 attendees.
2. Seguimos Creando Enlaces 2023 Library Conference
Community Outreach Supervisor and planning committee member of the binational
Seguimos Creando Enlaces conference Mayra Turchiano, supported the presentation of
“Seguimos Creando Enlaces 2023 Library Conference: Open Minds, Open Doors” on
May 12. The conference was held at the San Diego Central Library with 167 people in
attendance from both the U.S. and Mexico. This year’s conference opened with a
keynote presentation from beloved children’s author and illustrator Yuyi Morales, and
featured 2Spirit storyteller Juan Reynoso. Two staff members from the Carlsbad City
Library participated in the conference.

Programs:
3. Grow Your Garden: Garden to Table
The Adult & Teen Services division partnered with the Carlsbad Community Garden
Collaborative on May 27 for the second event in our annual gardening series.
Professional chef and Pine Avenue gardener Kyle Dixon taught a class of 25 students
how to incorporate your garden vegetables and herbs into making delicious aromatic
meals while cooking. 65 gardeners swapped crops, plants and succulents before and
after this informative gardening class. The program was held outside of the main
entrance of the library.
4. New Reader Book Club
AmeriCorps Member Mihoko Z. and Library Technician Michelle Williams facilitated the
New Reader book club. Five learners read and discussed “Loss” written by Literacy
Services staff member Michelle Williams.
5. Summer Reading Adventure 2023
Teen Librarian Ashleigh Hvinden and Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo received 172
applications for the Summer Reading Adventure Teen volunteer opportunity.
Orientations will be held in early June at all three library locations and virtually to
accommodate youth volunteers’ scheduling needs.
6. Kate White Author Event
Kate White, author of “Between Two Strangers” visited the Carlsbad City Library on
Dove Lane on May 23. She discussed her new book, shared insights into her writing
career and the art of writing suspense. 45 attendees participated in the book discussion
and signing, with opportunities to ask questions. Although it was meant to be a two-
author event, Cara Black could not attend due to an unexpected illness. The author
team was thrilled with the success of their first daytime/weekday event and plans to
explore rescheduling Cara Black's appearance.
Services:
7. ESL Classes
MiraCosta College’s English as a Second Language classes held at the Library Learning
Center concluded for the semester on May 20. Classes will resume in the fall.

Special Projects:
8. My Path to Carlsbad:
Librarian Emily Hardy coordinated with Senior Librarian Kristi Bell to digitize the Barrio
Museum items borrowed for the My Path to Carlsbad display. Kristi and Emily are
discussing different options for archiving the stories from that project as part of the
Carlsbad History collection.
Community Connections:
9. Storytime Training
Library Technician Hannah Lockhart and Senior Librarian Bill Sannwald conducted a
storytime training at the Carlsbad-based company Bitchin’ Sauce for four daycare
teachers. Hannah and Bill led a storytime for 10 children and the four teachers, provided
information about how and why different parts of the storytime were delivered, and
provided teachers with a copy of the Children’s Division’s Storytime Curriculum.
10. Encinitas Unified Media Aide Meeting
Dove Library hosted the final Encinitas Unified School District Library Media Aide
meeting on site on May 15, with Principal Librarian Laura Mendez, and Library Assistants
Hugo Ricalday Cuevas and Brandon Tiongison attending. Library Assistant Christina
Lorenzo attended the Carlsbad Unified School District Library Media Technician meeting
virtually on May 18.
11. Books To Go
Biking around Carlsbad, the Books To Go book bike team went to four events and
engaged with 628 people. At the Farmer’s Market and Hot Rods & Cool Treats, staff
reached 544 community members; at Carlsbad High School, staff interacted with 45
students and teachers; at Valley Middle School, staff met with 39 students, teachers &
parents. Our Books To Go events promote reading, online and downloadable services,
the city’s Safer Streets initiative, library services and events.
12. District English Language Advisory Committee (DELAC) meeting:
Community Outreach Supervisor Mayra Turchiano and Library Assistant Christina
Lorenzo attended the Carlsbad Unified School District English Language Advisory
Committee (DELAC) meeting as guest speakers, sharing information on the Summer
Reading Adventure 2023 program, Career Online High School, 1,000 Books before
Kindergarten, Mango database to learn English, and storytime programming. The
meeting was held on May 24, at Valley Middle School.

13. Girl Scout Collection Drive
All library locations supported local Girl Scout Troop 1434 in a collection drive for their
Bronze Award Project from May 10-19. Bins and signage were placed in the lobby of
each library facility to collect bar soap and travel-sized shampoo bottles to be included
in personal care packs that were distributed to 300 students and families in the
community.
Accomplishments:
14. Serving with a Purpose:
Senior Librarian Bill Sannwald attended the Serving with a Purpose conference in
Ontario, CA on May 23. It was the tenth anniversary of the conference, and Bill was
recognized by the team for his past contributions as a committee member. The
conference is in partnership with the California Library Association and focuses on
supporting organizations that support libraries, such as friends and foundations.
15. Public Management Academy:
On May 11, Senior Librarian Kristi Bell and Community Outreach Supervisor Mayra
Turchiano graduated from the Public Management Academy offered through The
Centre for Organization Effectiveness.
