Residential Development, Located on the Southwest Corner of Poinsettia Lane and Lowder
Lane City of Carlsbad, San Diego County, California, dated May 11.
Pursuant to your request, Earth-Strata is providing pavement design recommendations for Portland
cement concrete pavement sections for the proposed sewer access maintenance road in the northwest
portion of the subject property, which is located on the southwest corner of Poinsettia Lane and Lowder
Lane in the City of Carlsbad, San Diego County, California. Representative samples of the subgrade earth
materials were obtained from the subject site. The earth materials were tested for R-value in
conformance with the California Test Method No. 301. The preliminary test results indicated an R-value
of 57 for the subject site. Final design should be based on sampling and testing of post graded conditions.
Based on the anticipated site conditions and our review of the Typical Grasspave 2 Detail for the turf
block product by Invisible Structures, Inc., we recommend the following.
PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENT
Street Type R-Value Turf Block Aggregate Base

Subgrade materials immediately below the aggregate base should be compacted to a minimum of 95
percent relative compaction based on ASTM Test Method D1557 to a minimum depth of 6 inches. Final
subgrade compaction should be performed prior to placing base or turf block and after all utility trench
backfill has been completed.
Base materials should consist of Class 2 aggregate base conforming to Section 26-1.02B of the State of
California Standard Specifications or crushed aggregate base conforming to Section 200-2 of the Standard
Specifications for Public Works Construction (Greenbook). Base materials should be compacted to a
minimum of 95 percent relative compaction based on ASTM Test Method D1557. The base materials
