Absent: Trustee Schatt. Coun cil Chamber 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive Carlsbad, CA 92008 PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Trustee DeForest led the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the Library Board of Trustees regular meeting held Aug. 23, 2023. Motion by Trustee DeForest, seconded by Trustee Moran, to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried, 3/0/1/1 (Schatt -Absent, DeForest -Abstain). PUBLIC COMMENT: None. DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS: 1. LIBRARY REPORT FOR AUGUST 2023 -Receive the Narrative Report and Statistical Report for August 2023. (Staff contacts: Sheila Crosby and Katie Nye, Library & Cultural Arts) Recommendation: Receive the report. The board received the reports. Trustee Moran inquired about outreach to the various school districts in Carlsbad, and Deputy Librarian Katie Nye responded that the library serves all four school districts in Carlsbad. 2. FISCAL YEAR 2023-24 WORK PLAN -Discuss and approve the Library Board of Trustees work plan for fiscal year 2023-24. (Staff contact: Suzanne Smithson, Library & Cultural Arts) Recommendation: Discuss and approve a work plan for FY 2023-24. The board discussed and approved the Library Board of Trustees work plan for fiscal year 2023-24. Motion by Trustee Moran, seconded by Trustee McBride to approve the work plan . for fiscal year 2023-24. Motion carried, 4/0/1 (Schatt-Absent). Motion carried, 4/0/1 (Schatt-Absent). 3. REPORT ON ELIMATION OF OVERDUE FINES -Receive a report and data from staff after one year of having eliminated overdue fines. (Staff contacts: Andrea Hilliard and Lynn John- son, Library & Cultural Arts) Recommendation: Receive the report. The board received the report. Trustee McBride commented on being pleased with the communication between the community and the libraries being enhanced by the elimination of overdue fines and thanked staff for bringing the item forward. 4. NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT -Receive a report from the North San Diego County Genealogical Society. (Staff contact: Sheila Crosby, Library & Cultural Arts) Recommendation: Receive the report. The board received the report. Representative Mary Millet reported the society is delighted with the expansion of staff in the Carlsbad History & Genealogy division; the society is working on an informational pamphlet outlining who they are, what they do, and services offered; highlights from the society's newsletter; Fall seminar on Oct. 28 with Dave Robison presenting "Research: Strategies, Tools & More"; and the annual Salt Lake City research trip is scheduled for April 14 -21, 2024. TRUSTEES COMMENTARY AND REQUESTS FOR CONSIDERATION OF MATTERS: This portion of the agenda is for the Board of Trustees to make brief announcements, brief reports of their activities and requests for future agenda items. Trustees DeForest and Sheffler announced they will not be in attendance at the Library Board of Trustees regular meeting scheduled for Oct. 25. DIRECTOR'S COMMENTS: Deputy Library Director Sheila Crosby made the following announcements: • All three library locations will be closed on Oct. 9 in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day • All library locations will be closed until 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 for staff to attend Staff Development Day • Cultural Arts Manager Richard Schultz retired on Sept. 15 • In-and-Out Cover to Cover book challenge program runs from Oct. 7 -Nov. 18 • Cole added a pajama story time and a Lego builders' program Sept. 27, 2023 Library Board of Trustees Regular Meeting Page 3 • Cole Library will host a Halloween dance • Dove Library added a bilingual story time program • Dove Library is hosting Citizens Academy on Sept. 28 • Art pifiata program featuring artist Diana Benavidez in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month • Carlsbad Reads Together book title surveys are being reviewed and the top three book title authors will be contacted to determine a future virtual or in-person visit • Printing fees have been removed from all library locations as of Sept. 1 • SirsiDynix upgrade will take place on Oct. 9 while the library is closed in observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day • The Friends of the Carlsbad Library reported a successful buy one-get one sale for children, teachers and parents selling over 2000 items and raising approximately $700 ANNOUNCEMENTS: None.
