Highlights:
1.City Council Presentation on Libby
Senior Librarian Erin Peak and Lead Librarian Darin Williamson presented on the Libby App,
OverDrive’s app for eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines on Aug. 22. This was in response
to a request for a library staff presentation on Libby after Council Member Acosta
commented that she had downloaded and read the Carlsbad Reads Together book
selection, “The Line Becomes a River” by Frances Cantú from the library’s eResource, Libby.
The presentation can be viewed here: https://www.carlsbadca.gov/city-hall/meetings-
agendas/-folder-760
2.Keep Looking Up! Stargazing for the Perseid Meteor Shower
On Aug. 3, Librarian Emily Hardy facilitated the “Keep Looking Up: Stargazing for the Perseid
Meteor Shower” program in partnership with the San Diego Astronomy Association at the
Georgina Cole Library. There were 54 attendees, including seven children. The interactive,
educational, and high-energy program was enjoyed by all. An astronomy book display
complimented the program with a demonstration of the astronomy Great Courses, and
information on the State Parks Pass program.
3.Creative Art Passive Program: Embroider a Constellation
Librarian Emily Hardy launched the “Embroider a Constellation” take-and-make kits
program on July 24 and all 106 were collected by patrons within five days. The passive
program was used to cross-promote the Aug. 3 “Keep Looking Up: Stargazing for the Perseid
Meteor Shower” program, with small fliers attached to kits. Given the high attendance of 54

people the cross-marketing effort was a success. The program was also successful in
increasing Creativebug usage, with 40 active sessions in July, up more than 50% compared
to the previous month.
Programs:
4.Grow Your Garden
Carlsbad Community Garden set up a sunflower- filled table to greet and educate the public
in the Kulchin Courtyard at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane on Aug. 26. Many
questions were answered about gardening, seeds, edible herbs and succulents. Nita
Kurmins Gilson, representing ProduceGood, was the featured speaker. 20 people attended
this 90- minute meeting. Nita explained how her group utilizes volunteers to glean fruit
from orchards all over San Diego and to recover unsold produce from farmer’s markets and
harvest crops from farms.
5.Chat GPT and AI for Literacy Tutors and Learners
Library Assistant Sandra Riggins and Library Technician Jordan Daley presented a "Chat GPT
and AI for Tutors and Learners" training. Seven literacy learners and tutors learned the
basics of artificial intelligence and how AI works and the benefits of using AI for learning.
They explored two different AI applications, ChatGPT and Claude, and had hands-on
practice in learning how to create prompts that return the desired information. The training
emphasized the importance of using AI thoughtfully to enhance, rather than replace,
human teaching and learning.
6.English as a Second Language Classes
English as a Second Language classes offered in partnership with MiraCosta College
resumed on Aug. 21 after a summer break. Two classes are being offered at the Library
Learning Center: Conversation Skills for Intermediate Students and Reading and Writing
Skills for Intermediate Students. Each class meets two days per week for two hour sessions
with a required weekly online component of an additional two hours.
7.Tween Game Time
The first Tween Game Time took place on Aug. 10 in the Gowland Meeting Room at the
Dove Library with 33 in attendance. The program provided a variety of multi-player board
games, as well as a light snack, and invited tweens to come and enjoy strategy and
collaboration while interacting and engaging with their peers. Tween Game time will take
place every second Thursday of the month at 3:30 p.m.

A Career Online High School scholarship was awarded to a student who is eager to finish his
diploma and earn the Office Management Certificate. Eight students are currently
progressing through the Career Online High School diploma program.
Special Projects:
9.Early Literacy Play Station
Cole Children’s Library added a collection of early literacy toys for patrons to use while
visiting the library. Library Technician Hannah Lockhart worked with Senior Librarian Bill
Sannwald to plan, order, and assemble the toy bins. The toys are arranged in the following
categories: puppets, gone fishing, movement, community helpers, sorting, and stacking.
10.Outreach Strategic Roadmap Trainings
Principal Librarian Laura Mendez delivered training on the 2023-25 Outreach Strategic
Roadmap to multiple library divisions, including Children’s Services, Adult & Teen Services
and Circulation supervisors. Based on interviews, surveys, and data analysis, the roadmap
document establishes goals, guidelines and procedures for outreach and partnership
initiatives for Carlsbad City Library over the next two years. Training will culminate in a
recorded presentation for staff on Sept. 19.
11.Connect & Learn Panel Discussion
Connect & Learn is the name given to a staff led presentation where information is shared
with other staff on a conference or training that they attended. Exploration HUB staff Maile
McKeon, Andrea Hilliard and Dadyar Vakili presented on Aug. 9 and shared what they had
learned at the recent virtual MIRA Conference (Makerspaces for Innovation and Research in
Academics). Themes included creating inclusive spaces and creating safe spaces by allowing
staff and patrons to fail at their designs and creative pursuits
12.3D Printed Desk Grommet
Circulation Supervisor Patti Wiebe connected with Librarian Maile McKeon on an idea to 3D
print a cover for the Dove Library Accounts desk. Missing grommet covers have created an
undesirable situation where patrons drop trash into the holes in the desk. Exploration HUB
technician Perry Veater measured and designed branded 3D printed covers to solve the
problem. Additional covers will be printed and sent to the Cole Library to resolve the same
issue. Technology for the win!

Community Connections:
13.TGIF Library Outreach
Staff from multiple divisions represented the library at all six TGIF Concerts in the Parks
events, sharing information about the Summer Reading Adventure program and library
resources. Handouts for kids and a bubble machine were extremely useful in driving traffic
to the library’s outreach table; staff spoke with 500 individuals at the two August TGIF
concerts. Over the course of the six TGIF events in July and August, Carlsbad City Library
reached a total of 1,194 community members.
14.Back-to-School Registration Outreach
Staff from multiple divisions, including Children’s, Bilingual, Circulation and Literacy Services
attended back-to-school registration days at Valley Middle School, Jefferson Elementary
School and El Camino Creek Elementary. Staff shared academic resources for parents and
students and focused on library card sign-ups.
15.School eNewsletter
This month the library’s school outreach team began a monthly email series focused on the
library’s academic resources for faculty and staff in local school districts. The welcome
email was sent to 52 school contacts and received six responses to schedule outreach
services at both Carlsbad and Encinitas school districts.
16.Library Learning Center Celebration
The Library Learning Center’s 15-year anniversary celebration was a huge success on
Saturday, Aug. 26. Highlights include remarks by Library & Cultural Arts Director Suzanne
Smithson, live music program by LuMaya, finger foods from Lola’s 7Up Market, genealogy
program demonstrations in the computer lab, showing of the “Voices and Faces of Literacy”
video, community partner booths and library tours. The final door count was 408, with 119
attendees at the Pop-Up art event, 52 activity cards completed, 43 attendees at Bilingual
Storytime, 11 new library cards issued and 22 adults and children at the Words & Music
family literacy program. Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with one
little girl asking her grandfather when the next celebration would be so that they could
come.
17.San Diego County Library (SDCL) Staff Visit the Exploration HUB
Librarian Maile McKeon gave an overview of the photo scanner and digital conversion
equipment to SDCL staff who are looking to add “memory lab” equipment and software to
the County Library’s Solana Beach branch.
18.A Special Connection
Librarian Ann Montgomery from Genealogy & Carlsbad History helped a young expectant
couple find ancestral names for their forthcoming baby girl.

Patron Stories (heard around the library):
Exploration HUB patron feedback:
I attended both the Photo and Video conversion workshops, and they were excellent - lead by
very nice, patient and knowledgeable instructors.
I can’t wait to begin my project so I can use the equipment and skills I learned from both
workshops. I sincerely appreciate you and your staff. Keep-up the good work!
Take Care,
Javier P
Thank you for a fun Tinkercad class. Dadyar's presentation was excellent. I really learned a lot. It
was a really good review. Many of the students were first timers and Perry helped them keep
caught up. A really excellent class. – Barbara & Harold F.
