Be aware that correct operation of the AutoPulse Z-10 depends on the proper installation and placement of smoke and heat detectors. This is particularly true when installing a cross-zoned, agent release system. With a cross-zoned system, the detectors in the room must be installed so that each successive detector in the space being protected is on an alternating zone pattern. The location and spacing of detectors shall be in accordance with the requirements of Section 2-3.4 of the National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72). Ansul recommends 250 ft2 spacing per detector. Adhere to the following guidelines when wiring IDCs: All wiring must be from 12 AWG (max.) to 18 AWG (mm.). Conductors must test free of all grounds. All wiring is supervised and power limited. Leave 3.3K, 1/2W resistor (Part No. 430156) across all unused IDC terminals. See noteF41 in Figure 3-1 (two-wire). Terminate Style B Class B) circuits with a listed 3.3K, 1W (Part No. 431210) end-of-line resistor. See note 5 j in Figure 3-1. Terminate Style D Class A) circuits with a listed 3.3K, 1 W (Part No. 4312 10) end-of-line resistor. See note 6 in Figure 3-1. For Canadian applications, attach the following resistor to the ULC-listed EOL device. - Part No. 431210 3.3K, 1W resistor - Part No. 431537, Steel plate EOL Device .. Maximum line resistance for a circuit is 50 Ohms. - . Maximum number of smoke/heat detectors per IDC is 30. Maximum detector standby current is 3mA. Maximum alarm current at 24 VDC (short) is 60 mA. Voltage rating - nominal 24 VDC, 0.5V peak-to-peak ripple (max.) Any combination of the detectors and bases listed below may be installed, except only one Part No. 430569 or Part No. 430702 (Canadian) may be used per circuit. The compatibility identifier is the model number found on the detector, base, and control unit. Compatible device Part Numbers are as follows: (Refer to Part No. 431424 for installation instructions.) 430559, Photoelectric Smoke (2.8 %) Detector 430695, Photoelectric Smoke (2.8 %) Detector, Canadian 430560, Combination Photoelectric/Heat Detector 430696, Combination Photoelectric/Heat Detector, Canadian 430561, Ionization Smoke Detector 430697, Ionization Smoke Detector, Canadian 430562, Photoelectric Smoke (3.5%) Detector 430565, 135' Fixed Temperature with Rate-of-Rise Electronic Heat Detector 430699, 135° Fixed Temperature with Rate-of-Rise Electronic Heat Detector, Canadian 430566, 200° Fixed Temperature with Rate-of-Rise Electronic Heat Detector 430700, 200° Fixed Temperature with Rate-of-Rise Electronic Heat Detector, Canadian Compatible Bases. Each RAC must connect to a Part No. 430687 coil supervision module, which in turn connects to a 12 VDC or 24 VDC solenoid (also known as an actuator). Figure 3-2 shows the wiring connections to the AutoPulse Z-lO. All wiring must be 18 AWG (mm.) to 12 AWG (max.). Conductors must test free of all grounds. All wiring is supervised and power limited unless otherwise noted. Wiring between Part No. 430687 coil supervision module (Yell/Black) is not power limited. Refer to the Coil Supervision Module Wiring Instructions (Part No. 431303). Leave a 10K, 1/2 W (Part No. 43 1223) resistor across all unused RAC terminals. Voltage rating— nominal 24 VDC, 0,5 V peak-to-peak ripple, maximum. Total available current from main power supply is 3A. If auxiliary power is used, available signal power is reduced accordingly. Terminal designations "+" and "-" are for the alarm state. Connect 24 VDC actuator as shown, only one 24 VDC actuator per RAC. Connect 12 VDC actuator as shown; two units must be connected via a maximum of 20 feet of wiring in conduit. For specific actuator wiring instructions, refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. Only releasing devices meeting the following criteria may be used with the AUTOPULSE Z-10: . - Releasing devices specified by part number in this manual. - Any UL listed and/or FM-approved (as applicable) releasing device that is rated at 24VDC (2 Amp max) and has been specifically approved for use with the AUTOPULSE Z- 10 by Ansul Incorporated. - Any releasing device rated at 24VDC (2 Amp max) that is a component of a UL listed or FM-approved fire suppression system, and is specifically approved for use with the AUTOPULSE Z-10 byAnsul Incorporated. These systems automatically activate solenoid rontrol valves for the release of a fire extin- 3h1ng agent (such as dry chemical, water ay, foam, CO2, or INERGEN) in response to fire detection device input. UL and FM Agent Release System Panels must have a minimum of 24 hours of standby power. Initiating devices must be Listed/Approved for the application, and may be wired either Class A or B. Solenoid control valves must be electrically compatible with the control panel circuits and power supplies, and are wired Class B to provide coil supervision. Deluge and Preaction Sprinkler Systems automatically activate water control valves in response to fire detection device input. UL requirements for Fire Alarm Systems Listed for Automatic Release or Deluge and Preaction Sprinkler Systems are the same as described above for Automatic Extinguishing Release Systems. FM Approved requirements for Fire Alarm Systems for Automatic Release of Deluge and Preaction Sprinkler Systems require operation of specific compatible FM Approved Automatic Water Control Valves, a minimum secondary power capacity of 90 hours, and all circuits for the automatic release initiating devices must be capable of operation during a single open circuit fault condition (Class A). Preaction Sprinkler Systems are similar to deluge systems except that normally closed sprinkler heads are used and supervisory air -ssure is maintained in the pipe. Operation Jires both an activated sprinkler head and an activated fire detector (or fire detectors). Deluge Sprinkler Systems employ open sprinkler heads and provide water flow when the fire detection system activates a common automatic water control valve. They are used to deliver water simultaneously through all of the system sprinkler heads. This type of system is applicable where the immediate application of large quantities of water over large areas is the proper fire response. RELEASE CONTROL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Solenoid valves are connected as 2- wire, Class B notification circuits with only one 24 VDC solenoid valve per circuit (or two, 12 VDC solenoids in series if applicable) to ensure supervi- sion. Coil Supervision Module, Part No. 430687, must be wired electrically before the solenoid valve and located in the solenoid valve wiring junction box. For FM Approved Deluge and Preaction Sprinkler operation, initiating device circuits must be Class A, wired to Listed/Approved devices. Power supply loading and wiring distances must be per Installation, Programming, and Operating Instruc- tions, Part No. 430545. For FM Approved Deluge and Preaction Sprinkler Systems, battery standby capacity must be a minimum of 90 hours with 10 minutes of alarm. For FM Approved Automatic Extinguish- ing Release, battery standby must be a minimum of 24 hours with 5 minutes of alarm. Battery standby must be selected for a minimum voltage of 23 VDC to ensure proper valve operation. Maintenance Switch, Part No. 76498 or 76499, are required to ensure that notifi- cation circuits dedicated for release operation may be properly disabled prior to service. (Refer to NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm Code, Section 3- 10.4, 1996 edition or Section 3-8.4.3.4, 1999 edition.) For FM Approved Deluge and Preaction Sprinkler operation, the specified compatible Automatic Water Control Valves must be used. For UL Listed and FM Approved Auto- matic Extinguishing Release, solenoid valves must be electrically compatible. Abort Switches, Part No. 76494 or 76495, are available when abort opera- tion is required. When used, wire on Special Purpose Monitoring Circuits (SPMs) as Class A or B, the same as required for other initiating devices. Manual Release Stations are used for direct activation of the release solenoids with the appropriate time delay imple- mented by the fire alarm control panel (typically 15 or 30 seconds). LISTINGS AND APPROVALS UL Listed FM Approved CSFM (Pending) MEA (NYC) (Pending) EXPANSION MODULES AND ACCESSORIES Auxiliary Relay Module, Part No. 430529. Four relays per module are available as required. Dual hazard applications will require two modules for auxiliary relay opera- tion. Each relay module has a manual disconnect switch that controls relays 2 through 4 (Trouble Relay is not controlled). Relay outputs are required to be connected to 15 A maximum circuit breaker. Operation is per the following actions: Relay I activates on any trouble associated with its hazard Relay 2 activates on any alarm associated with its hazard Relay 3 activates with the first zone of a cross-zoned system (hazard specific) Relay 4 activates when the hazard specific RAC activates Dual Circuit Class A Adapter Module, Part No. 430531. This module converts two Class B circuits to Class A operation. It consumes no additional current and is compatible with lDCs, SPMs, and NACs. Up to four modules may be mounted within the Z-10 cabinet. Maintenance Switch. Each detector has an on-board micro- processor that evaluates its photoelectric light scattering chamber activity and makes an intelligent decision based on light obscuration history as to whether an alarm condition is present. LIFEalarm detectors are packaged in a patented housing that minimizes the visibility of the air intake louvers from the normal viewing locations while maintaining a high perfor- mance smoke capture ability. Bases are available for remote alarm LED indicator connections and auxiliary relay outputs. * LiFEalarm smoke detector operation is protected by one or more of the following U.S. Patents: 5,155468; 5,173,683; 5,400,014; 5543,777; 5,710,541; D383,407; D388,352; 0392,573. 006564 LiFEalarm Photoelectric Detector Mounted in Base Listings and Approvals UL Listed ULC Listed FM Approved CSFM (Pending) MEA (NYC) (Pending) Specifications Voltage 15 to 32 VDC, from Control Panel IDC Standby Current 100 pA @ 24 VDC Alarm Current, Up to 86 mA maximum, exact 2-Wire Operation current is determined by alarm current limiting of connected IDC Auxiliary Relay Ratings Refer to page 2 under Product Selection Air Velocity Range 0-2000 ft/mm (0-610 rn/mm) UL Listed Temp. H, mounted in base (124 mmx48mm) Smoke Detector Features Intelligent Data Evaluation. Conventional smoke detectors .will typically drift toward being too sensitive due to the accu- mulation of dust and dirt. With analog detection, data from the photoelectric chamber is monitored and analyzed at the detector to provide a continuously shifting reference point. Drift Compensation. The data evaluation and its shifting reference point provide a software filtering process that compensates for environmental factors (dust, dirt, etc.) and component aging, establishing an accurate reference for evaluating new activity. With this filtering, the resulting drift compensation provides a significant reduction in the proba- bility of false or nuisance alarms caused by shifts in sensitiv- ity - either up or down. Application Reference Detector Locations. Locations should be determined only after careful consideration of the physical layout and contents of the area to be protected. For further detailed installation information, refer to Detectors, Sensors, and Bases Application Manual, Part No. 431424. Sensitivity Selection. The standard sensitivity detector, Part No. 430559, is recommended for most applications. When a special application for a reduced sensitivity detector is required, Part No. 430562 should be considered. Consult Ansul for assistance in determining the proper selection. Magnetic Test Information. Status information is available by performing the magnetic test and observing the detector LED pulses. The LED will normally go directly into alarm with the magnetic test. If there is an off-normal condition, the LED pulses first to indicate the condition and then goes into alarm. This can be accomplished by direct manual actuation of its pull lever or cable actuation when used in conjunction with a remote manual pull station. When used with a remote man- ual pull station, the pull station must contain the compo- nents necessary to meet the actuator lever traveling requirements of 7 in. (178 mm). The actuator is shipped with ring pin and chain attached. If the ring pin is not required, it must be removed. Failure to remove the ring pin/chain assembly will prevent system actuation if a remote cable pull actuation system is employed and the ring pin is accidentally installed in the actuator. Strobe options for wall mount models include 1575cd or Wheelock's patented MCW multi-candela wall strobes with field selectable candela settings of 15/30/75/110cd, or the high intensity MCWH strobe with field selectable 135/185cd. Ceiling mount models incorporate Wheelock's patented MCC multi-candela ceiling strobe with field selectable intensities of 15/30/75195cd or the high intensity MCCH strobe with field selectable 115/177cd. The audible provides a selectable choice of either a continuous horn or temporal pattern (Code 3) when constant voltage from a Fire Alarm Panel (FACP) is applied. Each tone has 3 dBA settings to choose from. When used with the Wheelock Series SM or DSM Sync Module or Wheelock PS-12/24-8CP and PS-12/24-8MP Power Supplies with Patented Sync Protocol, synchronization of the continuous horn tone provides the temporal (code 3) tone (mandated by NFPA 72) simultaneously for all audible appliances. This ensures a distinct temporal (code 3) pattern when 2 or more audibles are within hearing distance. If not synchronized the temporal sound could overlap and not be distinctive. At the same time the strobes will be synchronized. This provides the ability to comply with ADA guidelines concerning photosensitive epilepsy and the NFPA standards when installing 2 or more visual appliances within the field of view all of this plus the ability to silence the audible is achieved by using only 2 wire.
