DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION CONVENTIONAL (OLD STYLE)
The Globe Quick Response GL Series Sprinklers are a low
profile yet durable design which utilizes a 3mm frangible glass
ampule as the thermosensitive element. This provides sprinkler
operation approximately six times faster than ordinary sprinklers.
While the Quick Response Sprinkler provides an aesthetically
pleasing appearance it can be installed wherever standard spray
sprinklers are specified when allowed by the applicable standards.
It offers the additional feature of greatly increased safety to life and
is available in various styles, orifices temperature ratings and
finishes to meet many varying design requirements. Quick QUICK RESPONSE
Response Sprinklers should be used advisedly and under the UPRIGHT CONVENTIONAL
direction of approving authorities having jurisdiction.
The heart of Globes GL Series sprinkler proven actuating
assembly is a hermetically sealed frangible glass ampule that
contains a precisely measured amount of fluid. When heat is
absorbed, the liquid within the bulb expands increasing the internal
pressure. At the prescribed temperature the internal pressure
within the ampule exceeds the strength of the glass causing the
glass to shatter. This results in water discharge which is distributed
in an approved pattern depending upon the deflector style used. QUICK RESPONSE

Corrosion resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the
life of copper alley sprinklers beyond
that which mould otherwise be ob-
tained when exposed to corrosive at-
mospheres. Although corrosion resis-
tant coated sprinklers have passed the
standard corrosion tests 01 the appli-
cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor-
rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it
is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability
01 these corrosion resistant coatings
for any given corrosive environment.
The effects of ambient temperature,
concentration of chemicals, and
gas/chemical velocity, should he con-
sidered, as a minimum, along with the
corrosive nature of the chemical 10
which the sprinklers will be exposed.

sprinklers designed for use in light or
ordinary hazard occupancies. They are intended for use in automatic
sprinkler systems designed in accord-
ance with standard installation rules (e.g., NFPA 13) for a maslmaer cover-

pared 10 the maximum coverage area

age sprinklers used in ordinary haz-

The Series EC-il and EC-14 Sprin-
klers feature a UL and C-UL Listing
that permits their use With unob-
structed or non-combustible ob-
structed ceiling construction as de-
fined and permitted by NPPA 13, as
well an a specific application listing for
use under concrete tees.
The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex.
tended Coverage Sprinklers have
been fire tested to compare their per-
formance to that of standard coverage
spray sprinklers. These tests have
shown that the protection provided is
equal 10 or more effective than stand-ard coverage spray sprinklers.

Operation
The glass bulb contains a fluid which
expands when exposed to heat. When
the rated temperature is reached, the
fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, which then allows the sprin-kler to activate 804110w water.
Design
Criteria
The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex-
tended Coverage Sprinklers must only
he installed in accordance with the ap-
plicable UL and C-UL Listing or FM Approval requirements as indicated
below. Only the Style 30 or 40 Re-cessed Escutcheon is to be used for
recessed installation, as applicable
(Rot. Table A. B. and C).
UL and C-UL Listing Requirements
I. The Series EC-il and EC-14 Sprin-
klers may be used for the coverage
areas shown In Table 0, based on
maintaining the minimum specified
flow rate as a function of coverage
area and hazard group for allot the sprinklers in the design area.
The Series EC-11i and EC-14 Sprin-klers are permitted to be used with
unobstructed or non-combustible
obstructed coiling construction as
defined and permitted by NFPA 13.
For example:

Listing Requirements For
Installation Under Concrete Tons
The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex-tended Coverage Upright and Pendent
Sprinklers (1Y5137,TY5237, TY6137 & TV6237) have a UL and C-UL Spe-
cific Application listing for use under
concrete tees when installed as fol-lows:
The stems of the concrete tee con-
structIon must spaced at less than
7.5 feet (2.3 m) on center but more than 3 feet (0,9 m( on center. The depth of the concrete fees must not
exceed 30 inches (762 mm). The
maximum permitted concrete tee
length is 32 feet (9,8 m); however,
where the concrete tee length en-coeds 32 feel (9,8 m), non-combus-
tible baffles, equal in height to the
depth of the tees, can he instafiedse that the space between the lees does not exceed 32 feet (9,8 m) in
length.
The sprinkler detectors are to he
located in a horizontal plane at or
above I inch (25,4 mm) below the bottom of the concrete tee stems.
When the sprinkler defectors are located higher than a horizontal
plane 1 inch (251,4 mm) beneath the
bottom 01 the concrete tee stems, the obstruct/on to sprinkler dis-charge criteria requirements of
NFPA 13 for extended coverage up-
tight sprinklers applies.
FM Approval Requirements
The Series EC-11 and EC-14 Ex-
tended Coverage Sprinklers are to be installed in accordance with the appli-

Care and
Maintenance
The Series EC-11 and EC-I4 Sprin-
klers must be maintained and serviced in accordance with the following in-
structions:
NOTE
Before closing a fire protection system male control valve for maintenance
work on the fire protection system that
it controls, permission to shutdown the
affected fire protection systems must
be obtained from the proper authori-ties and all personnel who may be affectecfby this action must be notified.
Sprinklers that are found to be leaking
or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion
must be replaced.
Automatic sprinklers must never be
painted, plated, coated, or otherwise
altered alter leaning the factory. Modi-
fied sprinklers must be replaced.
Sprinklers that have been exposed to
corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced
if they cannot be completely cleaned
by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or
by brushing it with a soft bristle brush.
Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers - before, during.
and after installation. Sprinklers dam-
aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage. or the like, must be re-
placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that
has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. )Ref. Installation Section).
Frequent visual inspections are rec-
ommended to be initially performed for corrosion resistant coated sprinklers,
after the installation has been com-
pleted, 10 verily the integrity of the cor-rosion resistant coating. Thereafter,
annual inspectIons per NFPA 25
should suffice; however, instead of in-
specting from the hoar level, a random
sampling of close-up visual inspec-
tions should be made, so as to better
determine the enact sprinkler condi-
tion and the long term integrity 01 the corrosion resistant coating, as it may be affected by the corrosive conditions present.
The owner is responsible for the in-
spection, testing, and maintenance of their lire protection system and de-
vices in compliance with this docu-
ment, as well as with the applicable
standards of the National Fire Protec-
tion Association (e.g.. NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other
authorities having jurisdiction. The In-
stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-facturer should be contacted relative In
any questions.
It is recommended that automatic
sprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified
Inspection Service in accordance With local requirements and/or national
codes.

MECHANICAL TEE
The Shurjoint hole-cut mechanical tee provides a fast and
easy mid-point branch outlet without welding. First a hole is cut
or drilled at the desired outlet location. The mechanical tee is
then positioned so that the built-in locating collar fits within the
hole. As the housing bolts are tightened the pressure moulded
gasket forms a leak-tight seal. Use of the Shurjoinf mechanical
tee can eliminate the need for multiple couplings and fittings.
Shurjoint offers a full range of mechanical tees:
Model 7721: Threaded outlet, NPT or BS21 (ISO-7) pipe threads
Model 7722: Cut-grooved outlet (machined)
Model 723: Saddle-Let; Small mechanical tee with threaded
outlet, NPT or BS21 (ISO-7) pipe threads
MECHANICAL CROSS
A mechanical cross connection can be made by combining
two mechanical tee upper housing segments. While the housing
segments must be the same size, the branch outlets can be of
the same or differing sizes or configurations.

Caution: Piping practices require that main and branch connections
are at a true 90 angle. Also be certain that the locating collar is
securely positioned inside the outlet hole before tightening the hous-
ing. When mechanical tees or mechanical crosses are used as transi-
tion pieces between two runs, the tees or crosses shall be assembled
prior to making the branch connections.
MODEL 723 SADDLE-LET (Small Mechanical Tee)
The Model 723 Saddle-Let is the ideal outlet fitting for direct
connections to sprinkler heads, drop nipples and or gauges. No
need for welding, just cut or drill a hole at the desired outlet loca-
tion. Position the Saddle-Let so that the locating collar fits within
the hole and secure with the U-bolt and nuts. The Saddle-Let
comes with a standard black finish or as an option can be supplied
electro zinc plated or painted orange. The Saddle-Let allows full
bore flow and is pressure rated to 300 psi (20 bar).
