Rancho Santa Fe Road San Marcos, California 92069 Attention: Subject: Gentlemen: Mr. Michael Martineau ALICANTE HILLS CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA RETAINING WALL FOUNDATION OBSERVATION In accordance with your request, we have observed the foundation excavation for the proposed retaining wall located in the area of Lots 5 and 6 and 16 and 17 at the subject subdivision. The purpose of our observation was to determine if, in our opinion, the footing excavation was suitable for the proposed wall. It is our understanding that the maximum height of the wall will be approximately 4 feet. The footing excavation was in previously compacted fill soils and fractured volcanic rock of the Santiago P·eak Formation. Due to the high density and the fracturing characteristics of the volcanic rocks, it was not possible to excavate a typical footing with a keyway as indicated on the San Diego Regional Drawing for a Masonry Retaining Wall Type I and Type II, Drawing C-2. Instead, the keyway was deepened to at least the depth indicated on the regional standard and was widened to the full footing width. Based upon our observations and our understanding of the proposed wall as described above, it is our opinion that the footing will be suitable as constructed and is in substantial conformance with the design indicated on the referenced Drawing C-2.
