Subject: City of Carlsbad Beach Profile Survey Results
Recommended Action
Receive an informational report on the local beach profile surveys to date, natural impacts, and
the results of past sand replenishment projects.
Discussion
Greg Hearon, Principal of Coastal Frontiers, will present an informational report on the state of
beaches within Carlsbad, based off the beach profile survey studies to date. The report will
include background information, monitoring program specifics, and survey results/findings.
At the special meeting on Dec. 7, 2022, the Beach Preservation Commission accepted its annual
work plan. The Goals & Tasks section of the approved work plan states:
1.Gain a better understanding of local shoreline preservation and beach nourishment
projects.
a.Study and investigate coastal erosion impacts to Carlsbad beaches through
understanding of coastal processes and terminology, including:
-Disruption of natural sand supply and sediment flow
-High intensity storms and potential flooding
-Hard stabilization structures or “coastal armoring”
-Sand replenishment/beach nourishment
-Living shorelines, shoreline buffers
-Sea Level Rise impacts - littoral cell/Oceanside cell
Dec. 5, 2023 Item #1 1 of 2

Conclusions
1. Regional Long-term Outcome
RBSP I and II provided regional benefits
Initial RBSP II outcome similar to RBSP I
Sustained gains at N. Carlsbad, Cardiff, and Solana
2. Carlsbad Long-Term Outcome
N. Carlsbad: Sustained long-term gains; recent erosion
Middle Bch: Stable; Fluctuates with AH Bypassing;
recent erosion
S. Carlsbad: Short-lived gains after each RBSP;
