ADULTS 50+ ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
DEPARTMENT REPORT
November 2, 2023
GENERAL
Goal 2: Support the Age-Friendly Carlsbad Action Plan
Summer Games
• During June-August 2023, patrons enjoyed fun in the sun every Friday afternoon in the Senior Center
Courtyard! All ages enjoyed outdoor games and music after lunch.
National Charity League Mother’s & Daughters
• During June-August 2023, mothers and daughters volunteered as servers in the dining room,
interacting with diners and playing games on Wednesdays.
Kid Concerts: Summer Series
• Seniors and summer campers enjoyed Kalli and Jay playing classical and movie themes on the piano
on June 19, 2023, and Audrey playing classic rock on the guitar on Aug. 7, 2023 in the Senior Center
Auditorium.
Carlsbad Service Leaders
• Between June-August 2023, Sage Creek high school students volunteered their time serving lunch in
the dining room and visiting with the diners.
Culinary Lab: Sweet & Savory Edition
• Staff instructors Keyla and Tawny lead cooking with the seasons in this bi-monthly program.
Students experience hands on learning, fun facts about ingredients, and share the delicious results.
Jefferson Elementary Reading Program – Fall 2023
• The Senior Center and the Pine Avenue Community Center staff worked together to recruit adults
50+ to help Jefferson Elementary students practice their reading and comprehension skills.
• Carlsbad Preschoolers ages 3 and 4 created Halloween card for congregate diners.
Goals 1, 3 & 4 Highlights: Collaborations beyond the Senior Center, increase social inclusion, enhance
connectivity and minimize isolation.
Community Garden Club
• Adults 50+ can sign up monthly to join Master Gardner, Jano Nightingale, to care for the Carlsbad
Senior Center raised garden bed in the Pine Avenue Park community garden.
Community Friendship Builders
• Every second and fourth Friday of the month, this free offering provides the opportunity to make
new friends through facilitated discussions and activities.

Mission San Juan Capistrano
• On June 23, 2023, participants traveled north to San Juan Capistrano for a guided tour of the
Museum & Mission San Juan Capistrano, known as the “Jewel of California Missions.”
Del Mar Racetrack
• On Aug. 31, 2023, horseracing fans visited the Del Mar Racetrack to enjoy a day filled with fun and
excitement as they watched the races from the Clubhouse Terrace restaurant with shaded seating.
Birch Aquarium
• On Sept. 29, 2023, Senior Center participants embarked on an under the sea adventure traversing
the Scripps Birch Aquarium located in La Jolla. This was our largest excursion post-Covid, with 29
registrants, 2 busses, and 4 staff!
Bates Nut Farm
• On Oct. 19, 2023, Senior Center participants returned to Bates Nut Farm for some fall fun.
Goal 4: Social Inclusion
Concert in the Courtyard
• The concert on June 12, 2023, featured Mango Jams Steel Band. Everyone enjoyed grooving to the
tropical hits that included calypso, reggae, pop tunes and the standards.
• The free craft fair on July 10, 2023, featured artwork for sale by our own Senior Center clubs and
musical jams performed by local band Ancora, who pumped out music from the 60s, 70', & 80s.
• The concert on Aug. 14, 2023, featured Swingergy who played Swing and Jazz music from the 20s,
30s, and 40s.
• The concert on Sep. 11, 2023, welcomed back the Vulcan Mt. Boys who shared their high energy
Bluegrass, featuring classic/contemporary Bluegrass and R&R oldies.
• The concert on Oct. 16, 2023, featured the Mocha Tones, playing blues favorites and classic rock.
• The Spooktacular Halloween Dance Party on Oct. 26, 2023, included a costume contest, raffle, and
live musical performance from Blue Suede Crew - with ' Elvis' from Las Vegas
Nutrition Program
• Staff celebrated monthly birthdays on the second Friday each month with ice cream bars and
reinstated games and trivia every Tuesday and Thursday in the dining room.
• During June-August 2023, an estimated 65 volunteers dedicated 820 hours to the congregate lunch
program and 1,170 hours for home meal delivery.
Program Highlights, June-August 2023
• A total of 2,800 patrons registered and attended classes at the Senior Center, 58% of registrations
were for health and fitness, and 80% of registrants were Carlsbad residents.
• Carlsbad resident and new volunteer art instructor, Leigh Cohn, featured dozens of oil paintings
around the Senior Center. Many pieces will be raffled off for free at the end of his show.
• The Senior Center hosted the Older & Bolder Expo on Sep. 9, 2023, featuring post-retirement
resources from over 40 local vendor booths and presentations.
STATISTICAL REPORTS
• Volunteers contributed 1,170 hours for the HMD program and 806 hours for the Congregate meal
program.

• Transportation was provided Monday–Friday to the Senior Center, with shopping options after
lunch every Wednesday, and opportunities to stay longer for Tuesday Bingo and monthly concerts.
• Medical appointment transportation was offered three days a week on Monday, Tuesday, and
Thursdays.
