Dear Ms. Kimbrell:
NOVA Services, Inc. (NOVA) has prepared this geotechnical addendum to respond to the referenced
third-party geotechnical review (N&M, 2023) for the Aviara Oaks Elementary School Modernization.
NOVA is retained by the Carlsbad Unified School District as Geotechnical Engineer-of-Record (GEOR)
for the project. The review comments and NOVA's responses are provided below.
Comment 1: The Geotechnical Consultant should review the project grading and foundation plans and
provide any additional geotechnical recommendations, as appropriate, and indicate if the plans have
been prepared in accordance with the geotechnical recommendations provided in the referenced
geotechnical report (NOVA, 2023).
Response: As agreed upon by Ruhnau Clarke Architects and the City of Carlsbad, this comment
addresses a matter of DSA jurisdiction. As such, no response from NOVA is provided herein.
Comment 2: The referenced geotechnical report (NOVA, 2023) does not include test dates or the full
test data/results from the percolation testing performed at the site. Per the City of Carlsbad BMP
Design Manual (2023), the date of the site analysis and results of testing should be provided. The
geotechnical consultant should provide this information.

Geotechnical Update, Response to Third-Party Geotechnical Comments
Aviara Oaks Elementary School, 6900 Ambrosia Lane, Carlsbad, CA NOVA Project No. 2021251
August 16, 2023
Response: The requested test data/results from the percolation testing performed at the site is
attached to this report. This includes the date of the testing (November 24, 2021) and the results.
Comment 3: We understand the original California Geological Society (CGS) submittal report was prepared in December 2021. The referenced geotechnical report (NOVA, 2023) has been updated to address the CGS review comments. However, this is a current submittal to the City of Carlsbad and the report references the 2019 California Building Code (CBC). The geotechnical consultant should provide clarification if the recommendations for the grading and stormwater aspects of the project are in accordance with the 2022 CBC as well.
Response: As agreed upon by Ruhnau Clarke Architects and the City of Carlsbad, this comment
addresses a matter of DSA jurisdiction. As such, no response from NOVA is provided herein.
Comment 4: The referenced geotechnical report (NOVA 2023) references the 2021 City of Carlsbad BMP Design Manual. The geotechnical consultant should provide clarification if the stormwater recommendations are in accordance with the current 2023 City of Carlsbad BMP Design Manual.
Response: Though the City of Carlsbad BMP Design Manual was updated from the 2021 edition to
the 2023 edition, none of the changes within the updated manual applied to NOVA's test methods and
results. The stormwater recommendations in NOVA's reporting are still applicable and in accordance
with the 2023 BMP manual.
CLOSURE
It is hoped the foregoing is clear. Should you have any questions regarding this letter or other matters,
please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned at 858.292. 7575 x 413.
Respectfully submitted,
NOVA Services, Inc.
