FIGURE A 6 -Deflector 1/2 INCH ORIFICE MODEL A PENDENT, RECESSED PENDENT, AND UPRIGHT SPRINKLERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION The 1/2 inch (15mm) orifice Universal Model A Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Upright Sprinklers (Ref. Figure A) are automatic sprinklers of the frangi- ble bulb type. They are "standard re- sponse -standard orifice spray sprink- lers" intended for use in fire sprinkler systems designed in accordance with the standard installation rules recog- nized by the applicable Listing or Ap- proval agency (e.g., UL Listing is based on NFPA 13 requirements). The Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Up- right Sprinklers all produce a hemi- spherical water distribution pattern below the deflector. The recessed versions of the Model A Sprinkler are obtained by utilizing the Model A Pendent Sprinkler in combi- nation with the Model F700 Recessed Escutcheon (Ref. Figures A and C). The F?0Q Recessed Escutcheon pro- vides 1/2 inch (12,7mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 3/4 inch (19, 1 mm) of adjustment from the flush pendent position. The F700 has a separable two-piece Printed in U.S.A. 4.94 design which allows installation of the sprinklers and pressure testing of the fire protection system, prior to ceiling construction and/or application of a fin- ish coat to the ceiling. They also permit refinishing of a ceiling surface without having to first shut down the fire pro- tection system and remove the sprink- lers. The adjustment provided by the F700 substantially reduces the accuracy to which the length of fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. Also, the Closure· has a 1 /2 inch (12, 7mm) wide flange which provides ample clear- ance for covering the mounting hole. APPROVALS AND STANDARDS Laboratory listings and approvals for the 1/2 inch (15mm) orifice Model A Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Up- right Sprinklers are given in Table A. WARNING The 112 inch orifice Model A Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Upright Sprinkle1·s described herein must be installed and maintained in compli- ance with this document, as well as applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addi- tion to the standards of any other au- thorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the integrity of these devices. The owner is responsible for main- taining their fire protection sy.'ltem and devices in proper operating con- dition. The installing contractor or manufacturer should be contacted rel- ative to any questions. Installation of Model A Pendent Sprinklers in recessed escutcheons other than the F700 will void all sprinkler warranties, as well as possi- bly void the sprinkler's Approvals and I or Listings. TABLE A LABORATORY LISTINGS AND APPROVALS temperature ratings and finishes indi- cated in Table A. Recessed versions of the Model A Sprinkler are obtained by utilizing the Model A Pendent Sprinkler in combi- nation with the Model F700 Recessed Escutcheon. The F700 Escutcheons are available with a chrome plated fin- ish or a coated finish in any color. The nominal discharge curve plotted in Figure B represents the flow "Q" in GPM (LPM) as determined by the fol- lowing formula: 0= K,/p where the nominal discharge coeffi- cient "K" equals 5.6 (80,7); and, "p" equals the residual flowing pressure in psi (bar). Listing standards permit the actual value of "K" to vary from 5.3 to 5.8 (76,4 to 83,6); however, for hydrau- lic calculations, a K-factor of 5.6 (80,7) is to be applied. The Frame of the Model A Sprinkler (Ref. Figure A), is bronze per ASTM B176 (C87800) or, a proprietary alloy designated as QM. The Button (bulb retainer) is phospher bronze per ASTM 8103 {C51000 or C52100). The Gasket~d Spring Plate consists of a Berylium Nickel (N03360) disc spring that is sealed on both its inside and outside faces with a Teflont gasket. The Compression Screw is bronze per ASTM B140 (C31400) and the Deflec- tor is brass per ASTM B152 (C11000). The Model A Sprinklers utilize a 5mm diameter frangible bulb. Table A indi- cates the bulb liquid color as a function of temperature rating. The F700 Recessed Escutcheon pro- vided for use with the Model A Pendent Sprinkler (Ref. Figure C) has a Closure and Mounting Plate fabricated from low carbon steel. The Mounting Plate prongs, which are compressed back into the Mounting Plate as the Closure is pushed over it, maintain a tight fric- tion fit between the two pieces. The Mounting Plate and Closure can also swivel relative to each other and com- pensate for minor non-perpendicular- ity between the Model A Sprinkler and the ceiling. INSTALLATION NOTES Da not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontal, a small air bubble should be present. The diame- ter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6mm) for the 135 "F / 57 'C ta 3 / 32 inch (2,4mm) for the 360"F/182'C rating. (At higher ambient temperatures, the bubble may be barely perceptable for the lower temperatw·e ratings.) (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maximum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque is to be used to install the sprinklers. Higher lev- els of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkle,: Do not attempt to make-up for in- sufficient adjustment in the es- cutcheon plate by under-or over- tightening the sprinkler: Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. 5. In recessed pendent sprinkler instal- lations, after the ceiling has been installed or the finish coat has been applied, slide on the F700 Closure over the Model A Sprinkler and push the Closure over the Mounting Plate until its flange comes in contact with the ceiling. CARE AND MAINTENANCE Automatic sprinklers must never be shipped or stored where their temper- atures will exceed 100"F/38"C and they must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leav- ing the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers -both before and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb (ref. Installation Section Note). NOTES Absence of an escutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, may delay the time to sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Before closing a fire protection system control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system which it con- trols, permission to shut down the af- fected fire protection system must be obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. It is recommended that automatic sprinkler systems be inspected quar- terly by a qualified Inspection Service. Dyna-Thread· Full Line Sch-40 Replacement Dyna-Threa, offers the life expectancy of Sch-40 with superior hydraulics and greater value. Dyna-Thread sprinkler pipe represents an engineering advancement for the sprinkler pipe industry. It combines the safety and longevity of traditional Sch-40 pipe with quality and superior hydraulic advantages. Comparison to Schedule 40 • Dyna-Thread's inside diameter is up to 3.6% larger than Sch-40 giving it superior hydraulics. And, when used in combination with Dyna-Flow pipe, down sizing often occurs. • Dyna-Thread is fully listed and approved by UL, ULC, and FM for fire sprinkler applications. • The life expectancy of Dyna-Thread and Sch-40 are equal based on the calculated wall thicknesses per UL. • The consistent quality of steel used to make Dyna-Thread facilitates smooth threading and lower maintenance costs. • The exterior of Dyna-Thread is protected by a clean, durable mill coating for extended shelf life and easy paint application. ®<8>@ listed Approved Listed • With its increased strength and lighter weight, Dyna-Thread reduces installation fatigue and is ideal for retro-fit applications. Corrosion Resistance Ratio (CRR) is a UL (Underwriters Laboratory) term for the estimated life expectancy of a pipe joint. This is based on the calculated wall thickness at the base of the first exposed thread, assumed to be the weakest point of the pipe length. Dyna- Thread and Sch-40 have the same calculated wall thicknesses at this point and are both assigned the same CRR of 1.00, The internal surface of all black Allied Tube & Conduit Fire Sprinkler pipe products up to 4.5000" in diameter is coated with our new Antibacterial Fonnula, "ABF". In scientific laboratory test, ABS proved to have superior resistance to microbial colonization of pipe walls, thereby delaying or possibly preventing the onset of Microbiologically Influenced corrosion (MIC) when the First Sprinkler System is first installed.
