Carlsbad Surgery Center -Storage addition

Description of proposed revisions
The Surgery Center Shell Building was originally designed by CGA Architecture Planning, in April
2006 for Ford Mance. The building is now known as the Carlsbad Surgery Center at 6121 Paseo
Del Norte.
The Architecture speaks to Spanish Mission Style/ modern revival; use of plaster walls, flat planer
forms, arches, punched openings and clay tile roofs modernized with ribbon windows on two
elevations and use of courtyard and trellis elements to identify entry and pedestrian pathway.
The Surgicenter is in need of additional storage space for bulk surgical supplies that currently are
housed in an interior clinical space which must be returned to use. Adjacency to the clinical use
area is critical, which places the expansion into the courtyard entry area facing the north and east
elevations of the building.
These elevations face Paseo Del Norte and currently utilize a trellis structure which is an aesthetic
attachment and was not designed for function. Patient's families will use the east west trellis on
the north facing elevation to get to the recovery care area. The trellis does not protect during
inclement weather and the client wishes to correct this issue along with the small expansion on
the east elevation.
We are proposing to add a sloped roof structure with new rafters and eave detailed to match the
second level upper roof, on top of the trellis structure. With this roof addition, the east west trellis
(north facing) will now provide cover and the north south trellis (east facing) will house the needed
storage area allowing for a 270 square foot addition. The storage room will be fully enclosed and
conditioned as identified on the floor plan. Doors, frames and hardware will match the existing
solid doors on the building.
Architecturally, the East elevation, at the first level will have a new wall be brought out and will
be detailed to match the existing East wall plaster and control joints. The design concept is to
create an addition that is contextual and expresses itself as an integral part of the original design.
