Programs:
2. Matthew Quirk: The Night Agent
On Jan. 6, Library & Cultural Arts Department staff partnered to present author Matthew
Quirk discussing his novel “The Night Agent,” in tandem with a special screening of the
Netflix show based on his book. The 2-hour event took place in the Schulman Auditorium.
Librarian Liza Blue moderated the author discussion and audience Q&A that followed the
screening. 180 people attended the event.
3. Just the Facts! Book Club
Librarian Emily Hardy hosted the inaugural meeting of “Just the Facts!” Nonfiction Book
Club on Jan. 4. The hybrid format book club had 25 people in attendance, 15 joining virtually
and ten in person. This book club gathering has achieved a goal of attracting a more diverse
demographic of book club participants with significantly more male attendees and
individuals under the age of 50, as compared to the Tuesday Night Book Club which this
new program replaced. Participants provided positive feedback, especially regarding the
hybrid format.

4. English as a Second Language
The winter semester of the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes presented in
partnership with MiraCosta College started the week of Jan. 22. Two classes are being
offered at the Library Learning Center: Multilevel Beginning-Intermediate ESL on Mondays
and Wednesdays, and ESL Conversation for Intermediate students on Tuesdays and
Thursdays.
Special Projects:
5. Exploration HUB
Staff are testing demo Windows laptops for the HUB upgrade project. The HUB iMacs will
be replaced with Windows laptops providing a more accessible way to serve our patrons
with computers on the most popular operating system. HUB staff will work closely with
Information Technology colleagues to fine-tune the hardware and software in the HUB’s
third iteration. HUB offerings will include crafting, 3D design and printing, and coding and
robotics for ages 13 and up.
6. Interview Preparation Workshop
An online interview preparation workshop was offered to staff on Jan. 23. The workshop
was hosted by Senior Librarian Bill Sannwald, moderated by Training Coordinator Hannah
Nelson, and featured a panel consisting of numerous library leaders. Attendees learned
about what a successful interview looks like, dissected interview questions with the panel,
and participated in a question-and-answer period. The training was recorded so staff who
were not able to attend could watch at a later date.

Community Connections:
7. School Tour
On Jan. 18, Librarian Emily Hardy and Senior Librarian Bill Sannwald led a Story Time
program and tour of the Georgina Cole Library for a group of Valley Middle School students
with exceptional needs. Bill and Emily each read a picture book to the group in the
Community Room and led them through the different sections of the library. The group
seemed to have a good time and learned a lot about the operations of the library, especially
enjoying Bill’s tour of the AMH “book robot.”
8. School Presentation
On Jan. 8, Principal Librarian Laura Mendez and Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo
delivered a presentation about library services for the Army & Navy Academy Professional
Development Day. They shared information about Sora, the Winter Reading Challenge,
State Parks Passes and more to an audience of 26 educators for middle and high school.
9. School Outreach
Principal Librarian Laura Mendez worked with Circulation Services staff and teacher Robert
Brown to create and deliver library cards for the Jefferson Elementary first grade class. The
school was so happy about the effort that they will include it in their parent newsletter, and
work with the library to deliver library cards to other grades in the coming months.
