Executive Summary The board will review the library’s monthly narrative and statistical reports for January and February 2024. These reports provide a summary of work completed across all Carlsbad City Library divisions and locations as well as data and information about the services and programs provided for the community. Explanation & Analysis None. Fiscal Analysis No financial impact. Next Steps None. Environmental Evaluation This item does not require environmental review because it does not constitute a project within the meaning of the California Environmental Quality Act under California Public Resources Code Section 21065 in that it has no potential to cause either a direct physical change in the environment or a reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment. Winter Reading Challenge The annual Winter Reading Challenge was a great success and far surpassed participation in 2023. In partnership with the local Dave & Buster’s in Carlsbad, those who finished the challenge earned a $20 Power Card voucher, while supplies lasted. Matthew Quirk: The Night Agent On Jan. 6, Library & Cultural Arts Department staff partnered to present author Matthew Quirk discussing his novel “The Night Agent,” in tandem with a special screening of the Netflix show based on his book. The 2-hour event took place in the Schulman Auditorium. Librarian Liza Blue moderated the author discussion and audience Q&A that followed the screening. 180 people attended the event. 3. Just the Facts! Book Club Librarian Emily Hardy hosted the inaugural meeting of “Just the Facts!” Nonfiction Book Club on Jan. 4. The hybrid format book club had 25 people in attendance, 15 joining virtually and ten in person. This book club gathering has achieved a goal of attracting a more diverse demographic of book club participants with significantly more male attendees and individuals under the age of 50, as compared to the Tuesday Night Book Club which this new program replaced. Participants provided positive feedback, especially regarding the hybrid format. March 27, 2024 Item #2 Page 3 of 9 4. English as a Second Language The winter semester of the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes presented in partnership with MiraCosta College started the week of Jan. 22. Two classes are being offered at the Library Learning Center: Multilevel Beginning-Intermediate ESL on Mondays and Wednesdays, and ESL Conversation for Intermediate students on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Special Projects: 5. Exploration HUB Staff are testing demo Windows laptops for the HUB upgrade project. The HUB iMacs will be replaced with Windows laptops providing a more accessible way to serve our patrons with computers on the most popular operating system. HUB staff will work closely with Information Technology colleagues to fine-tune the hardware and software in the HUB’s third iteration. HUB offerings will include crafting, 3D design and printing, and coding and robotics for ages 13 and up. 6. Interview Preparation Workshop An online interview preparation workshop was offered to staff on Jan. 23. The workshop was hosted by Senior Librarian Bill Sannwald, moderated by Training Coordinator Hannah Nelson, and featured a panel consisting of numerous library leaders. Attendees learned about what a successful interview looks like, dissected interview questions with the panel, and participated in a question-and-answer period. The training was recorded so staff who were not able to attend could watch at a later date. March 27, 2024 Item #2 Page 4 of 9 Community Connections: 7. School Tour On Jan. 18, Librarian Emily Hardy and Senior Librarian Bill Sannwald led a Story Time program and tour of the Georgina Cole Library for a group of Valley Middle School students with exceptional needs. Bill and Emily each read a picture book to the group in the Community Room and led them through the different sections of the library. The group seemed to have a good time and learned a lot about the operations of the library, especially enjoying Bill’s tour of the AMH “book robot.” 8. School Presentation On Jan. 8, Principal Librarian Laura Mendez and Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo delivered a presentation about library services for the Army & Navy Academy Professional Development Day. They shared information about Sora, the Winter Reading Challenge, State Parks Passes and more to an audience of 26 educators for middle and high school. 9. School Outreach Principal Librarian Laura Mendez worked with Circulation Services staff and teacher Robert Brown to create and deliver library cards for the Jefferson Elementary first grade class. The school was so happy about the effort that they will include it in their parent newsletter, and work with the library to deliver library cards to other grades in the coming months. Author Program On Saturday, Feb. 17, Librarians Ashleigh Hvinden and Liza Blue hosted authors Piper Huguley and Jeffrey Blount in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. 43 people attended this Black History Month event. Ms. Huguley discussed the history of dress designer Ann Lowe, who is famed for designing Jacqueline Onassis’ wedding dress, and Mr. Blount discussed how he received inspiration for his book, “Mr. Jimmy from Across the Way” while reading about a black billionaire. 2. In the Pages of History a Black History Month Event with Breanna J McDaniel Librarian Emily Hardy hosted “In the Pages of History; a Black History Month Event with Breanna J. McDaniel.” 34 people attended the program, and an engaged question and answer session was moderated by Library Technician Amberley Middleton. Partner organization Adventures by the Book hosted a book signing afterward and sold nearly all their supply from Dr. McDaniel. 3. Positionality and Power Workshop In coordination with the author visit and discussion on the same day, Dr. Breanna J. McDaniel, a children’s book author, educator and Black History scholar presented a training to Library & Cultural Arts leadership staff along with Training Coordinator Hannah Nelson. Dr. McDaniel facilitated a discussion on "Positionality and Power” which explores how personal identity shapes leadership styles and team interaction. 4. Ruben H. Fleet Science Center workshop series The Fleet Science Center series of workshops at the Carlsbad City Library began in February. This series is partially supported by Community Arts Grants. The first program of the series started at the Library Learning Center on Feb. 1 at focusing on Color and Light. Three additional programs were presented throughout the month at the other library locations and included subjects on Scribble Bots and Engineering. The workshops will continue throughout March and April. The programs reached max capacity at the Library Learning Center, with a total of 66 participants among the two programs. Carlsbad Village Farmers’ Market Lead Librarian Darin Williamson and Library Technician Jordan Daley attended an outreach event on Feb. 21 at the Carlsbad Farmer’s Market. In addition to donated books, Jordan distributed 110 literacy book bags containing 220 Vox books as part of a grant-funded outreach to raise awareness of the library’s Literacy Services program. Staff spoke to 584 people about children’s programs, the seed library, Career Online High School, and the English as a Second Language classes offered in partnership with MiraCosta College. Other: 6. South Orange County Genealogical Society Visit On Feb. 28, Genealogy & Carlsbad History staff hosted the South Orange County Genealogical Society members visit. Information about the “safari” to visit our collection from their website included this description: “The Cole Library has an entire floor dedicated to genealogy! Over 30,000 books and many journals, society newsletters, microfilm, microfiche, and CD’s.
