MINIMUM FM20011 Fire Suppression Agent EFFECTIVE JAN 1999 P/N 90-1 90000-OOX 90.1900.1 Features Non-Ozone Depleting • Safe for Total Flooding of Occupied Spaces Clean-No Residue to Clean Up • Non-Damaging to Hazard Contents Fast Acting • Active Fire Suppression Agent UL Component Recognized • FMRC Approved EXTINGUISHING AGENT FM-200 (1,1,1 ,2,3,3,3-heptaflUoropropane) is a compound of carbon, fluorine and hydrogen (CF3CHFCF3). It is color- less, odorless and electrically non-conductive. It suppresses fire by a combination of chemical and physical mechanisms without affecting the available oxygen. This allows personnel to see and breathe, permitting them to leave the fire area safely. FM-200 has acceptable toxicity for use in occupied spaces when used as specified in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Significant New Alternative Policy (SNAP) program rules. Although FM-200 is considered non-toxic to humans in concentrations neces- sary to extinguish most fires, certain safety considerations should be observed when applying and handling the agent. The discharge of FM-200 may create a hazard to personnel from the undecomposed agent itself and from the decompo- sition products which result when the agent is exposed to fire and other hot surfaces. Exposure to the agent is gener- ally of less concern than is exposure to the decomposition products. Unnecessary exposure to the agent or the decom- position products should be avoided. Toxicity: In tests, the acute toxicity of FM-200 was shown to be equivalent to that of Halon 1301. FM-200 has been evaluated for cardiac sensitization through test protocols approved by the US EPA. The EPA's SNAP Program classi- fies FM-200 as acceptable for use as a total flooding agent in occupied spaces. Refer to the SNAP program rules for more information. Cleanliness: FM-200 is clean, leaves no residue, thereby eliminating costly after-fire clean-up, and keeping expensive "down-time" to a minimum. Most materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and other metals as well as plastics, rubber and electronic components are unaffect- ed by exposure to FM-200. DESCRIPTION The Kidde Gemini II is a microprocessor based program- mable Suppression Control System designed for operation with Conventional Fenwal Ionization and Photoelectric Smoke Detectors. In its simplest configuration, the Kidde® Gemini II Main Control Panel (MCP) is a single hazard Con- trol Panel that can be field-expanded to be a large 8 hazard Control System with multiple Remote Display Units. Sys- tem expansion is achieved by adding up to 7 Remote Haz- ard Units (1 RHU per added Hazard) and up to 16 Remote Display Units (RDU). The MCP communicates with the RHUs and RDUs on a dual path Style 7 RS-485 network, monitors their status and displays system wide messages. SYSTEM COMPONENTS MAIN CONTROL PANEL (MCP) MCP Power Supply: The MCP operates on 120/240 Vac 50/60 Hz Power Sup- ply. The Power Supply Unit is rated 4 Amps at 24 Vdc and is provided a Battery Charger to charge a 24 Vdc backup Bat- tery. The Battery may be sized for 24 hour Standby with 5 minutes Alarm or for 90 hour Standby with 10 minutes Alarm depending on the Suppression System. The Power Supply causes an immediate changeover to battery in case of loss of AC input or drop in input voltage. MCP Display Panel: The MCP Display Panel is provided with an LCD Display, five status LEDs and a local buzzer. It also includes four system control buttons and four menu control buttons (see Figure 1). MCPVtO SYSTEM STATUS NOt —. '250 02.50-01 L pd.M SUPO TILOO K1DDE -1 .:;TS. Figure 1. They are con- structed of heavy die-cast aluminum for long life and reliability. These manual stations have the exclusive Kidde look, with gloss red paint with raised white let- tering, and black sides with a white trim border. The B10 station has a standard single pole single throw switch, while the Bil has a double pole single throw switch for local annunciation or remote signal- ing. Switches are gold plated for reliability when used in low current initiating circuits. These manual stations are designed for quick, effi- cient response by personnel in an emergency, while the standard double action PUSH/PULL levers pre- vent accidental operation. The keylock allows the unit to be easily reset and tested, and the stations are keyed to match the Kidde ScorpioTM, PEGAsysTM, and Orion TM control panels. Optional surface backboxes are available, which are painted red and sized to match the manual stations. The SGB-32S is UL Listed for indoor use, and the SGB-32C cast aluminum weatherproof box is UL Listed for outdoor use. The weatherproof box comes with a gasket kit which allows either the B10 or Bil to be mounted outdoors. B 1 or 0 1 shown with Fire Alarm Label Installed FIRE ALARM OR SUPPRESSION RELEASE LABELING The Kidde 1310 and Bli Manual Pull Stations have a unique labeling method which provides the installer the greatest amount of flexibility. Six labels are shipped with each station: FIRE ALARM FIRE SYSTEM RELEASE FM-200 RELEASE FE-13 RELEASE CO2 RELEASE HALON 1301 RELEASE These permanent, heavy-duty Lexan self-adhesive labels are die-cut with raised lettering. During instal- lation, the installer simply chooses the appropriate label, removes the protective backing, and places the label into the space on the top of the station. This flexibility allows installations to be customized for each customer, without the expense of having to carry extra inventory. OPERATION The dual action B10 and Bil manual stations are operated by simply pushing the PUSH bar inwards, allowing the PULL handle to be grasped in a one- handed motion. The handle is then pulled down as far as it will go. If the optional breakrod is installed, it would break at this point. The handle is now locked in place, and is easily visible from up to 50 feet away. The handle is reset by opening the sta- tion with the key, placing the handle in the normal upright position, and re-locking the station. DESCRIPTION Models PSD 7155 and 7156 series photoelectronic Smoke de- tectors respond to a broad spectrum of both flaming and smol- dering fire conditions. They incorporate state-of-the-art, solid- state, low-voltage circuitry featuring SMT (Surface Mount Tech- nology) and are designed for 2-wire and 4-wire installation with the proper base. The detectors are designed for open area protection (UL Standard 268) and for duct applications (UL Stan- dard 268A). They may be installed in fire protection systems and systems intended for releasing device service with com- mercially available fire suppression or detection control units, provided compatibility has been established. Model PSD 7156 includes a 135°F thermistor heat detector. These models operate over a 10.2 to 36.8 VDC range (2WB base only, 24V nominal) with compatible control units. EMI/ RFI noise immunity up to 20 volts/meter assures virtual elimi- nation of false alarms from electrical interference. Effective: September 1996. A 0-300 fpm and the 7155P is rated for 0-4000 fpm open area detection. Sensitivity ranges can be measured in place using a commercially available voltmeter and a special Fenwal meter (ST-001) that allows direct % per foot obscuration measure- ment. Readings found to be within specified limits are accept- able for normal field applications. Model PSD 7156 includes a thermistor heat detector with 135°F set point. Operation of the thermistor detector is independent of smoke detector circuitry. Functional testing is accomplished by means of a magnet which causes an alarm condition. This magnet test meets the require- ment of the U.L. Sensitivity Test Feature. Under alarm condi- tion, the pulsing LED will switch to a steady red illumination. Base installation is both simple and fast because of screw- type connections. The detector is fitted to the base by a twist- to-lock action. A removable locking tab secures the head to base to provide a high degree of vandal resistance. An extra fine mesh insect screen protecting the chamber area reduces potential nuisance alarms. Photoelectric detectors may be interchanged with Fenwal ion- ization detectors when using multifunction base configurations. Optional bases are shown in Table Ill. High signal-to-noise ratio permits a significant reduction in light ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS baffling, thereby improving smoke entry characteristics while reducing nuisance alarms. Testing: General The following test shall be performed upon installation of the de- tector and once a year thereafter as stated in NFPA-72 (1993). All alarm signal devices, releasing devices, and extinguishing sys- tems should be disengaged while the test is being performed and reengaged at the conclusion of testing. After powering the detector head for approximately 1 minute, check to see that the alarm indicator LED flashes. Failure to flash indicates a nonfunctioning detector or faulty wiring. Re- check wiring and replace detector head it necessary. Position a test magnet* against the detector housing marked "TEST '(see Fig. 7B) for at least 15 seconds. The detector should alarm as indicated by steady illumination of the alarm indicator. To return each detector to normal operation, reset the control unit. Fenwal P/N 06-117883-001 or equal. *Use extreme caution when using magnet in EDP Facilities. To be safe, notify EDP management of intent to use magnet in their facilities. The long axis of the magnet should be positioned against the side of the detector housing marked "TEST" (See Fig. 7B). OR Allow smoke to enter the detector sensing chamber and ob- serve the red alarm indicator. When sufficient smoke has en- tered the chamber, an alarm will be indicated by continuous illumination of the LED. Reset each detector and/or control unit after it alarms before attempting to test additional detectors in the same zone. Failure to alarm in tests 2 or 3 indicated a defective detector requir- ing service. SENSITIVITY METERING TEST To conduct sensitivity testing for the PSD7155 and 7156, you will need the following test equipment. 1 megohm (minimum) input impedance voltmeter (FLUKE, Model No. 8024 or equivalent) Sensitivity tester Model ST-001 P/N 70-500000-002 Disengage alarm signal devices, releasing devices, and extin- guishing systems while test is being performed. Remove the detector head from the base as described under Detector Head Installation. Note the % per foot obscuration range marked on the detector label Under nominal sensitivity. Reinstall the detector head to the base. Allow 1 minute for stabi- lization. The alarm indicator should flash approximately once every 4 seconds. No flash indicates a nonfunctioning detector or faulty wiring. Steady illumination indicates an alarm state. Follow the detailed operating and sensitivity measurement in- structions provided with the Fenwal Sensitivity Tester (ST-001) P/N 70-500000-002. This sensitivity tester will perform the con- version to % per foot obscuration. Ref. Fig. 8. Sensitivity readings outside the given ranges indicate a shift in sensitivity and need for corrective action. a. Clean the detector as outlined under MAINTENANCE and repeat Steps 2 through 5. p 5 b. If readings are still out of the allowable range, replace the-detector. Except in cases of suspected terminal or cable problems. 7. After all the tests are complete, be certain that complete system is returned to normal. Fig. 8 General Equipment Connection Notes: 1) Digital voltmeter not supplied. 2) For more information, see instructions supplied with Sensitivity Tester. Data Sheet No. 70.50.A. Note: Detector sensitivity shall be checked within one year of installatior and every alternative year thereafter as stated in NFPA 72, dated 1993 MAINTENANCE The recommended requirement for detector maintenance consists of an annual cleaning of dust from the detector head by using the suction of a vacuum cleaner. Cleaning programs should be geared to the individual environ- ment in conformance with NFPA 72E Standard. CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT DISASSEMBLY OF THE FACTORY SEALED SMOKE DETECTOR. THIS ASSEMLY IS SEALED FOR YOUR PROTECTION AND IS NOT INTENDED TO BE OPENED FOR SER- VICING. OPENING OF THE DETECTOR WILL VOID THE WARRENTY. Perform the Sensitivity Metering Test as outlined in this document. Confirm that the sensitivity readings are within specified limits on detector label. If sensitivity readings are out of limits specified-on detec- tor label, contact the factory customer service depart- ment for details concerning the detector EXCHANGE PROGRAM. The detector EXCHANGE PROGRAM offers the customer new product of the latest design as direct replacement for existirig detectors. The EXCHANGE PROGRAM is available to all end users for a nominal fee, regardless of the age of the detector. SPARE PARTS None. Unit is factory repairable only. No field repair should be attempted. ARCHITECT/ENGINEER SPECIFICATIONS The contractor shall furnish and install photoelectric smoke detectors, Fenwal Series PSD 7155 or 7156 where indicated on the plans. The-combination detector head and twist-lock base shall be UL Listed compatible with a UL Listed tire alarm control unit. PSD 715X series photoelectric detectors and CPD 705X series ionization detectors shall share an interchangable base. The Fenwal smoke detector shall have a flashing status indicating LED for visual supervision. When the detector is actuated, the flashing LED will latch on steady at full brilliance. The detector may be reset by actuating the control panel reset switch. The vandal-resistant security locking feature shall be used in those areas as indicated on the drawings. The locking feature shall be field removable when not required. It shall be possible to measure the sensitivity level of the detector without removal from the base. Measurement shall be accomplished with a commercially available volt- meter and a Fenwal Sensitivity Tester (ST-001) allowing direct measurement in percent per foot obscuration. It shall also be possible to perform a functional test of the detector without the need for generating smoke. The test method must simulate effects of products of combustion in the optical chamber to ensure testing of all detector cir- cuits. This test can be performed locally and/or remotely. By using a furnished wire jumper, it shall be possible to check circuit loop continuity prior to installing the detector head. The detector shall be listed and approved for wall and ceiling mounting. Models PSD 7155 and 7156 shall operate over an input voltage range from 10.2 to 36.8VDC. Voltage and RF transient suppression techniques to with- stand up 1020 volt/meter to be employed to minimize susceptibility to false alarms. The smoke detector may contain an optional 135°F ther- mistor temperature, self-restoring heat detector. Actuation of this device shall activate an alarm and function inde- pendent of the smoke detector electronic circuit. Supplementary SPDT relays, remote test, and/or remote LED alarm indicators may be installed where indicated. 0 I This literature is provided for Informational purposes o* KIDDE-FENWAL, INC.
